European Union countries are set to adopt a common traffic light system to coordinate traveling across the 27-nation bloc

BRUSSELS — European Union countries are getting ready to adopt a common traffic light system to coordinate traveling across the 27-nation bloc, but a return to a full freedom of movement in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic remains far from reach.

In addition to causing the deaths of at least 151,000 EU citizens and plunging the EU’s economy into recession, the coronavirus has also landed a blow to a cherished cornerstone of EU citizenship, the free movement of people.

When the virus struck in March, several EU countries decided to close their borders to non-citizens without talking to their neighbors, creating huge traffic jams and slowing down

Biden fans at nation’s largest retirement community

October 12, 2020

THE VILLAGES, Fla. (AP) — Sara Branscome’s golf cart whizzed down the smooth asphalt path that winds through The Villages, the nation’s largest retirement community, an expanse of beautiful homes, shops and entertainment venues that bills itself as “Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.”

Branscome’s cart was festooned with two American flags that flapped in the warm afternoon breeze. A line of oncoming carts bedecked with balloons and patriotic streamers chugged past while honking. Branscome jabbed her left foot on the horn pedal, then gave a thumbs-up.

“This gets you rejuvenated and ready for the next month or so, so we can do this and win. It gives you hope,” the 60-year-old retiree said.

Then she let out a whoop and two surprising words: “Go Biden!”

It’s not a cry that might be expected to resound in The Villages, and it’s certainly not one that is encouraging to President Donald Trump. Older voters

A worthy Nobel for United Nations World Food Program

October 9, 2020

| Health Food

The cascading global governance, health, economic and environmental crises have exacerbated the food crisis. So it was fitting that an indefatigable international institution dedicated to fighting hunger — the United Nations World Food Program — won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee cited the WFP “for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in the efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

This insidious use of food as a weapon is particularly pernicious, Gina Torry, the director of the International Center for Dialogue and Peacebuilding, told an editorial writer in an e-mail exchange.

“In today’s conflicts, conventional weapons of war, such as guns and explosives, are no longer the only weapon of choice,” said Torry, who formerly ran the Nobel Peace Prize Forum.

LONDON — The United Nations World Food Program has won the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger.

The world’s largest humanitarian organization was awarded the prize Friday for its “contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said the WFP had “demonstrated an impressive ability to intensify its efforts.”

“In countries such as Yemen, the Democratic Republic of

Poll: More blame US government than foreign nations for coronavirus crisis

October 5, 2020

| Health

More than half of Americans blame the federal government for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a higher number than those who said they primarily blamed foreign governments such as China for the disease’s spread.

A poll conducted for the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy by The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 56 percent of respondents say the U.S. government carries “substantial” responsibility for the state of American COVID-19 outbreak, while just 47 percent said the same about leaders of foreign countries and 39 percent blamed the World Health Organization (WHO).

That comes after months of the Trump administration blaming both China’s government and the WHO for the scale of the U.S. outbreak, which has surpassed 7 million cases and more than 209,000 deaths. Top administration officials have claimed for months that the U.S. response was hampered by China’s supposed unwillingness to

Another Covid-19 Wave Won’t Imperil the Nation’s Toilet Paper Supply, Whole Foods CEO Says

October 3, 2020

| Health Food

If Covid-19 infections are indeed headed for a third wave in the U.S., God forbid, grocery store shortages are unlikely to be the problem they were last spring. That’s according to John Mackey, co-founder and CEO of Whole Foods Market, who also shared his thoughts on grocery delivery and obesity when we spoke this past week. m

Mackey was promoting his new book on virtue in business, Conscious Leadership. Meanwhile, I’m trying to raise awareness among grocery CEOs for an issue facing people my age, or at the very least, me. Amid the boom in organic, ethical, and craft products, the back stories on shampoo bottles have grown so elaborate that the word “shampoo” has been shrunk to make room. My wife keeps upward of eight bottles of hair products in the shower, and without my glasses, I’m at daily risk of shampooing with conditioner. I asked Mackey to

5 new cases of COVID-19 a ‘wake-up call’ for community, say Six Nations health officials

October 1, 2020

| Community Health

Public health officials are calling an overnight spike of five new COVID-19 cases on Six Nations Territory a wake-up call for community members.

Ohsweken Public Health has reported three confirmed cases and two probable cases of the virus within 24 hours, according to a media release shared Wednesday evening.

They’re the first new cases on the territory since Aug. 10 and bring the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 21.

“Since moving to stage 2.5 the community are becoming slack with the core health principles,” stated Lori Davis Hill, director of Six Nations Health Service.

“Please let these 5 new cases be a stark reminder that the virus is still in and around Six Nations Territory.”

Davis Hill urged community members to follow health guidelines in order to keep cases to a minimum.

“My advice would be to conduct yourself as though you have the

“We have an agreement, we have seed funding and now we need the full amount of funds to buy these tests,” he said, without specifying.

Dr. Catharina Boehme, chief executive of a non-profit group called the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics, said the rollout would be in 20 countries in Africa, and would rely on support of groups including the Clinton Health Access Initiative. She said the diagnostic tests will be provided by SD Biosensor and Abbott.

Peter Sands, the executive director of the Global Fund, a partnership that works to end epidemics, said it would make an initial $50 million available from its COVID-19 response mechanism. He said the deployment of the quality antigen rapid diagnostic tests will be a “significant step” to help contain and combat the coronavirus.

“They’re not a silver bullet, but hugely valuable as a complement to PCR tests, since although they are less accurate,
