High-intensity exercise has no effect on mortality rate in older populations, study suggests

High-intensity exercise does not appear to add to risk of mortality among older adults, a new study has found.

INTERMITTENT FASTING MAY CAUSE MUSCLE LOSS MORE THAN WEIGHT LOSS, STUDY SAYS

The research, which was published in The BMJ medical journal on Wednesday, found that HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and MICT (moderate-intensity continuous training) for those aged 70-77 showed no increase in the risk of mortality compared to recommended daily activity.

”This study suggests that combined MICT and HIIT has no effect on all-cause mortality compared with recommended physical activity levels,” the study authors from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway, Newsgram reported.

Participants were splits into a control group, HIIT group and MICT group.

Understanding Mortality Rates for Black Newborns

October 11, 2020
| Health News

Research published late this summer suggests that “newborn–physician racial concordance is associated with a significant improvement in mortality for Black infants,” i.e., when they received care from Black physicians.

Lead author Brad N. Greenwood, PhD, an associate professor at George Mason University School of Business, took time to answer questions about this research.

Did you determine why Black babies have a better chance of survival?

Greenwood: I want to emphasize how cautious we need to be about speculating about the “why” question because it is speculative. This is secondary data so nailing down the exact mechanism is difficult, even if we do see the effect get larger in some places — hospitals that deliver more Black newborns — and smaller in others — Black newborns without comorbidities. But there are several possible explanations:

  • We want to be careful not to pathologize Black newborns, but there is evidence that Black newborns

Covid-19 mortality rates are falling worldwide, but scientists worry that may be temporary

October 9, 2020

| Health Article

Death rates from the novel coronavirus are lower in hot spots around the world, even as new infections accelerate in what may be the pandemic’s next wave. Scientists are confident the change is real, but the reasons for it — and whether it will last — are a matter of intense debate.

“Is this a trend or a blip?” asked Joshua Barocas, an infectious-disease specialist at the Boston University School of Medicine. “Nobody really knows.”

The mortality rate of the coronavirus has been a moving target since the outbreak began.

Early reports out of China put it as high as 7 percent. But that was based mostly on hospitalized patients, and by the time the wave hit the United States, epidemiologists believed it was closer to 2 to 3 percent. Now, factoring in asymptomatic infections, as well as mild cases that might not be part of official tallies, the Centers

Better health infrastructure has no direct link with COVID mortality: Health Secy

October 6, 2020

| Better Health

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday said that better public

health infrastructure has no direct bearing on deaths caused due to Novel Coronarius, but in order to reduce mortality, it is important that patients receive timely treatment.

In a press briefing, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, when asked about the high number of deaths due to COVID-19 in urban areas of Maharashtra, despite having better health facilities, said better health facilities can’t stop death.

He said, ‘If you look at European countries, the system of public health and hospitals in France, Italy and

Spain was comparatively much better than in our country. Despite this, there were large-scale COVID-19 deaths.

‘The question is not if you have a large number of hospitals and better facilities are available in the hospitals, then there will be no deaths due to corona. The question is

On 21 May, 2020, the Joint Research Coronavirus Task Force was launched in Japan to promote the development of a mucosal vaccine for COVID-19 based on advanced genomic analysis.

“We will analyze 600 blood samples taken from Japanese COVID-19 patients located in approximately 100 hospitals throughout Japan,” explains Takanori Kanai of the Keio University School of Medicine, who leads the task force. “One of the goals of the research is to try to understand why the mortality rate due to COVID-19 has remained significantly lower in
