LATEST SCIENCE AND RESEARCH

READ | Trial launched in SA to test whether MMR vaccine protects healthcare workers against Covid-19

Scientists from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Witwatersrand (Wits) are launching a clinical trial to test whether the childhood vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) can protect frontline health-care workers from Covid-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, or reduce the severity of illness for infected individuals.

Researchers of the trial are hoping to learn whether the vaccine can elicit an immune response that slows the spread of the virus and protects frontline healthcare workers who work in high-risk settings from developing Covid-19.

The MMR vaccine was approved almost 50 years ago and has since been safely given safely to hundreds of millions of people around the world.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the vaccine is widely used for

Health care has certainly been at the forefront of our lives over the last few months. As humans, we have faced constant and numerous challenges to life as we know it during a global pandemic. Despite the recent life-altering changes and protective strategies now incorporated into the defense of our own personal health, it’s important to remember that we cannot let our guard down regarding other critical health issues.

Heart disease, stroke, cancer and other life-threatening diseases have not taken an intermission during this pandemic. They remain center stage, becoming even critical when left unattended. However, some people have chosen to postpone certain health screenings that in the end could cause even more serious health concerns.

True, thousands of patients have taken advantage of technology, experiencing the benefits of telemedicine over the last eight months with online patient visits. Unfortunately, medical tests and diagnostic screenings, including mammograms, cannot be completed

Trump has been “all caps” tweeting up a storm from his hospital bed this morning and none of them make sense

Early Monday morning, the tweets were flying from President Donald Trump’s Twitter account in a flurry, despite the fact that he’s hospitalized in Walter Reed Medical Center with COVID-19. Trump hasn’t been very active on his favorite social media platform during the last few days while undergoing extensive treatment for the virus. His latest Twitter storm began around 7 a.m. EST this morning, and they did not stop. They also did not make sense, for the most part.

Some of the strangest exclamations of this morning included shouting reasons people should vote, like “RELIGIOUS LIBERTY” or “STRONGEST EVER MILITARY” or “MASSIVE REGULATION CUTS.” He also showed unease about swing states, like Virginia.

But most of the tweets were just desperate shouts of an unwell man, with no rhyme or

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — President Donald Trump’s hospitalization stretched into a third day on Sunday as he and his health team sought to clarify contradictory statements and confusion from the day before that raised questions about the seriousness of his fight with COVID-19.

Doctors were set to provide a briefing on Trump’s health late Sunday morning.

The president faces “critical” coming days after a “very concerning” period in his fight against COVID-19 at a military hospital, his chief of staff said Saturday — in contrast to a rosier assessment from Trump’s doctors.

‘I’m starting to feel good’: Trump releases 4-minute video from hospital

Trump offered his own assessment of his status Saturday evening in a video from his hospital suite, saying he was beginning to feel better and hoped to “be back soon.” And he was back on social media early Sunday morning, sharing a video of flag-waving supporters, most

Georgians need better health insurance access

A recent Savannah Morning News headline indicated that half a million people in Georgia lack access to decent internet. This was undoubtedly brought to light as children are challenged with online learning.

This population probably overlaps with the half-million people who lack health insurance in Georgia because of the intransigence of legislators who refuse to expand Medicaid, so all Georgians can access a basic level of healthcare.

Last week, the Commonwealth Fund, which supports independent research on health policy reform, presented its annual report assessing 49 health measures in the 50 states and Washington, D.C. They found Americans are living shorter lives than in 2014; that Black Americans are nearly twice as likely as whites to die prematurely from treatable conditions, suicide, and alcohol and drug overdoses; and that health coverage gains associated with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) have stalled, while affordability of
