How Money Fuels Racism In Health Care

October 13, 2020

| Dept Of Health

As part of the 2020 Citizens’ Agenda project, WBEZ is reporting on the issues you told us you care about most ahead of November’s elections. Many of you want elected officials to address the racial inequities in health care underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic. This reporting was driven by audience responses to our Citizens’ Agenda Survey.

The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare racial disparities in health care that were generations in the making.

There’s a host of factors fueling inequities, but a key one is a lack of money for hospitals that mainly treat low-income people of color.

WBEZ talked to leaders at these so-called safety net hospitals, to state officials, and to health policy experts and lawmakers to explain how funding contributes to racial disparities – and what they can do to address it.

A critical mission – with big challenges

Safety net hospitals live by this mission: Treat

Are you wasting money on Medicare supplement plans?

October 13, 2020

By Paul Davis | Contributing Writer

You may think this as a devious come-on from an unscrupulous insurance agent. But really, my intent is to try to connect with people who are truly overpaying on their present plans without realizing it.

If you watch TV, it’s difficult to avoid commercials for Medicare Advantage HMO plans that have zero monthly premium. Those plans are great for people who have doctors contracted with those plans and comfortable with the HMO concept. FYI, some of those plans include providers contracted with UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Many people find that surprising.

But this article is more for those people who want to have freedom of choice and do not mind paying a monthly premium for a Medicare Supplement (also known as a Medi-gap) plan.

If you’re on a Plan J, which has not been sold since 2010, you are on the richest standardized

Don’t overlook these 6 employee benefits that can save you money

October 12, 2020

It’s that time of year again — open enrollment season is approaching, giving many Americans an opportunity to sit down and go over their employer-sponsored workplace benefits for next year.

This year, amid the coronavirus pandemic, more than 70% of employees plan to spend more time reviewing voluntary benefit options offered by their employer, according to a September survey by Voya Financial.

While most employees are generally familiar with their employer-sponsored health insurance and retirement plans, they may be overlooking other benefits that could help them save money or better protect against an event such as an accident or illness.

“You want to see if there’s anything else out there that you could be taking advantage of to improve your your health, or your financial health or both,” said Kim Buckey, vice president of client services at benefits consultant DirectPath. “We don’t want to miss out on something better and

Livongo Health (NASDAQ:LVGO) stands out as one of the stocks that have benefited tremendously from the COVID-19 pandemic this year. The company’s digital health platform helps individuals manage chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. With the pandemic increasing the need for remote health monitoring and personalized healthcare, Livongo was in the right place at the right time.

Some investors were also in the right place at the right time by buying Livongo shares at the company’s initial public offering last year. They’ve won big from the rise of the healthcare stock in 2020. Here’s how much you would have now if you’d invested $10,000 in Livongo Health’s IPO.

If you’d been able to buy at Livongo’s IPO price of $28, an initial investment of $10,000 would have given you 357 shares. If we assume you didn’t buy partial shares, you would’ve had a

Researchers gave homeless people money and what they did with it might surprise you

October 10, 2020

A nonprofit organization led a study that explores what might happen if people who are homeless are given financial support and the results may surprise you.

Foundations for Social Change, a Canadian charitable organization based in Vancouver, British Columbia, teamed up with the University of British Columbia for a social program, called the New Leaf Project. Researchers gave 7,500 Canadian dollars (approximately $5,717.27) via direct transfer to 50 people who had recently become homeless. The people were free to use the money as they saw fit with no restrictions.

To the surprise of the researchers, most of the recipients used the cash to turn their lives around. “Preliminary results show that on average, those receiving the direct cash payment moved into stable housing faster, maintained a level of financial security and stability over 12 months of follow-up, and increased their spending on food, clothing and rent,” said Foundations for Social

California’s stem-cell research program nearly out of money

October 2, 2020

| Health News

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s first-of-its-kind state program to fund stem-cell research is running out of money and supporters want voters to provide a $5.5 billion infusion.

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine has doled out nearly $3 billion for research since the non-profit was created in a 2004 ballot question supported by 59% of voters. New stem-cell labs were created around the state and grants were awarded to Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and other prominent institutions.

In the years since, clinical studies have been launched to determine how stem cells might treat a variety of diseases, including Alzheimer’s, cancer and Parkinson’s, as well as such conditions as spinal paralysis and auto-immune deficiencies.

Proposition 14’s supporters are hoping voters will again support the program, although some acknowledge that with the state caught in a pandemic-infused economic crisis it’s hard to guess how the electorate will react. Early

Female doctors get paid less than male doctors, but a new study disputes the common wisdom that it’s because they work less.

In fact, female doctors spend more time with patients, order more tests and spend more time discussing preventive care than their male counterparts, a team of researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.

“That raises the question of whether we are paying for what we really care about in health care,” said Dr. Ishani Ganguli, an internal medicine specialist at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, who led the study team.

Ganguli and colleagues looked at billing and time data covering more than 24 million visits to primary care doctors in the US in 2017.

“We calculated that women were paid 87 cents to the dollar for every hour worked compared to their male colleagues,” Ganguli told CNN.

Alfred Abraham has had colon cancer, prostate cancer, open heart surgery and his left eye removed.

Yet at 100, he’s still alive and well. Every day, he and his partner Brian eat fruit and salad and go for walks. He and his family were planning a big party to celebrate his becoming a centenarian this past April, but the pandemic wouldn’t allow for it.

“At the present time, I’m doing very nicely despite what’s going on,” said Abraham, a former CPA and bank executive who lives in New York.

One big part of why he’s doing so well is his financial advisor, he says.
