Mission Health, the North Carolina Division of HCA Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers, last week announced that it has collaborated with EVERFI, an international technology company driving social change through education, to launch an interactive, mental health and wellness digital education course for middle and high school students in conjunction with Mental Illness Awareness Week. The course will be available in McDowell, Macon and Buncombe counties.

Called Mental Wellness Basics, the course is targeted to reach more than 12,000 middle and high school students in an estimated 105 school districts in Southeast Florida, Western North Carolina, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Texas. HCA Healthcare is investing nearly $1 million over the next three years to sponsor the course.

Our mission to improve mental health care

Imagine having cancer or a heart condition and not having access to high quality care. Tragically, this has been the reality for the 1,300 youth in Sonoma County who experience their first psychotic episode each year. Connecting youth with the appropriate treatment early on can drastically alter a young person’s future. But to date there hasn’t been a program in Sonoma County equipped to handle this need.

When she was almost 17, and having completed two years of college, she came to us for help saying she was not feeling right. She was suffering from severe depression and anxiety, which we and she believed could be addressed with our health care provider’s assistance. We were so wrong.

The brain is an organ in our bodies.

The Ohio National Guard continues to assist 14 food bank locations and warehouses across the state.

The guard’s COVID-19 response began when Gov. Mike DeWine signed a state active duty proclamation to activate personnel from the guard and Ohio Military Reserve to assist with humanitarian efforts, March 18, 2020. About 350 guardsmen are currently supporting the food bank mission.

Federal funding for the National Guard’s nationwide COVID-19  response missions has been extended into December. While there are Ohio National Guard units transitioning out of the food bank mission in order to return to civilian and military obligations, new units are being brought in to continue providing assistance at all 14 locations throughout the state.

“The length and scope of this mission has been unprecedented for the National Guard, and our work is not finished yet. I am proud of the efforts of every soldier and Airman who has stepped up

| Global Health

It all started with an ad in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Patricia Brock Howard had taken some time off from medicine to raise her children. She was flipping through the magazine when an ad seeking medical supply donations caught her eye.

“I cut it out,” Brock Howard recalls. “And I sent away for more information.”

It was the 1990s, so rather than Googling, she waited for a reply via the mailbox..

Around the same time, she had an opportunity to go on a medical mission to El Salvador with her church, West U Methodist.

Brock Howard decided to get her passport and serve on the mission. Everything seemed to gel. Before she knew it, she was on the plane to El Salvador, reading the information that had just arrived in the mail about the ad in the AMA journal.

What she learned was disturbing. A doctor
