Mike Pence echoes Trump misfires in vice presidential debate

October 9, 2020
| Health Facts

WASHINGTON — Although more buttoned-up on the stage than his boss, Vice President Mike Pence nevertheless echoed many of President Donald Trump’s falsehoods Wednesday in the one and only debate with Democratic rival Kamala Harris.

Pence muddied the reality on the pandemic, asserted Trump respects the science on climate change when actually the president mocks it, overstated the threat of voting fraud and misrepresented the Russia investigation in the Salt Lake City debate.

Harris got tangled in tax policy at one point and misleadingly suggested that Trump branded the coronavirus a hoax.

Altogether, the debate wasn’t the madhouse matchup of Trump vs. Joe Biden last week. But there were plenty of distortions. A sampling:

ECONOMY

PENCE: “Joe Biden wants to go back to the economic surrender to China, that when we took office, half of our international trade deficit was with China alone. And Joe Biden wants to repeal all

The medical facts about Mike Pence’s debate red eye

October 8, 2020

| Health Facts

Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday night managed to make it to the debate stage despite the fact the White House is in the middle of a coronavirus outbreak that seems to continue to grow.

During the debate against Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, Pence’s left eye quickly became the talk of the internet after people noticed it appeared to be red and blurry throughout his performance.

While it’s not clear why the vice president’s eye looked a bit off and he recently tested negative for COVID-19, it prompted many users to speculate on whether it could be an indication Pence may be infected with the coronavirus, as pink eye is known to be a symptom.

The virus took center stage in the skirmish between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris.

October 8, 2020

| Health Center

As Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris clashed over the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic Wednesday night, Mr. Pence defended the White House’s record without addressing its fundamental failures, while Ms. Harris accused him and President Trump of presiding over a public-health catastrophe.

Ms. Harris delivered a comprehensive denunciation of the Trump administration’s policies, ranging from the economy and climate change to health care regulation and taxes.

As Ms. Harris attacked Mr. Trump, the vice president sought to recast Mr. Trump’s record on the pandemic and other issues in conventional and inoffensive terms, though often in plain defiance of the facts.

The vice president made misleading or plainly false claims about White House policies on a range of subjects weighing down Mr. Trump in the presidential race.

Mr. Pence claimed that the president had a plan to protect people with pre-existing medical conditions, even though he

Debate Watchers Are Convinced Mike Pence Has Pink Eye

October 8, 2020

| Health

There was quite a bit to unpack during Wednesday night’s Vice-Presidential debate—one that has gained more significance in recent days following President Donald Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis. However, while many focused on what both Mike Pence and Kamala Harris had to say, something else  (besides a fly landing on his head) took center stage when it came to the Vice-President—his left eye.

As Pence took his turn to speak at various points—or interrupted Harris during her time—several debate watchers took notice that his left eye appeared to be red, and led many to wonder what was going on.

It also became a concern as many wondered if the Vice-President was suffering from Conjunctivitis—also known as Pink Eye—which can be a symptom of a COVID-19 infection. According to the Journal of Medical Virology, 1.1% of people who had COVID-19 also developed conjunctivitis, with an additional 3.3% of those being people with

Vice presidential candidates Sen. Kamala Harris and VP Mike Pence debate

October 8, 2020

| Health Facts

The two candidates for vice president are participated in their only debate of the election on Wednesday night.

The 90-minute debate between Sen. Kamala Harris and Vice President Mike Pence covered a variety of topics. We fact checked statements made by both candidates.

Coronavirus

The first topic discussed was the coronavirus pandemic.

Pence lauded President Donald Trump’s travel restrictions on China during the beginning stages of pandemic. Pence said Biden called that order “xenophobic.” Our partners at FactCheck.org say that’s unclear.

On the day Trump imposed the travel restrictions, Biden criticized Trump for his “record of hysteria and xenophobia,” but it is unclear whether Biden was referring to Trump’s travel restrictions, or Trump’s overall qualifications to deal with the epidemic.

Pence also said the Obama administration left the federal stockpile of emergency medicine and supplies empty when Trump took office. FactCheck.org says that claim is false, though some materials were

Fact check: Claims from Mike Pence and Kamala Harris at the VP debate

October 8, 2020

PENCE, on the conclusions of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation: “It was found that there was no obstruction, no collusion. Case closed. And then, Sen. Harris, you and your colleagues in the Congress tried to impeach the president of the United States over a phone call.”

THE FACTS: That’s a mischaracterization of Mueller’s nearly 450-page report and its core findings.

Mueller did not absolve the president of obstructing the investigation into ties between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. Instead, his team examined roughly a dozen episodes in which the president sought to exert his will on the probe, including by firing his FBI director and seeking the ouster of Mueller himself. Ultimately, Mueller declined to reach a conclusion on whether Trump had committed a crime, citing Justice Department policy against indicting a sitting president. That’s not the same as finding “no obstruction.”

On collusion, Mueller said he did not

Fact check: Mike Pence describes Kamala Harris as radical

October 8, 2020

Washington

Claim: President Donald Trump and supporters say Kamala Harris, the Democrats’ vice presidential candidate, is a mean-spirited radical leftist eager to shrink police forces and embrace Medicare for All.

Rating: Largely untrue.

Details: In the eight weeks since she’s been on the Democratic ticket, Trump has called Harris “vicious” and “extraordinarily nasty.” Republican Party chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Harris “applauds defunding of the police.” Harris wants to put “bureaucrats in charge of the nation’s health care system,” said GOP national spokeswoman Liz Harrington.

The high-powered campaign against Harris is highly unusual, said vice presidential campaign expert Joel Goldstein.

“President Trump has devoted an unusual amount of campaign rhetoric to attacking Senator Harris,” said Goldstein, a professor emeritus of law at Saint Louis University. “The Republicans have been unable to make a case against VP Biden, so President Trump is assailing Sen. Harris.”

Vice Presidential Debate Fact Check: Kamala Harris, Mike Pence face off in Salt Lake City

October 8, 2020

| Health Facts

WASHINGTON — Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris tussled Wednesday in the first and only vice presidential debate before the Nov. 3 election, coming as the coronavirus sidelined President Donald Trump at the White House.

A look at how the running mates’ statements from Salt Lake City stack up with the facts:

HEALTH CARE

PENCE: “President Trump and I have a plan to improve health care and to protect preexisting conditions for all Americans.”

THE FACTS: There is no clear plan. People with preexisting conditions are already protected by the Obama-era Affordable Care Act, and if the Trump administration succeeds in persuading the Supreme Court to overturn it, those protections will be jeopardy.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order declaring it the policy of the U.S. government to protect people with preexisting conditions, but Trump would have to go back to Congress to work out legislation
