With athletes trained in resilience, Special Olympics helps members maintain mental and physical fitness through virtual events

Michael Heup, a Special Olympics athlete who has become a leading advocate for people with disabilities, took a deep breath as the torch approached. Heup, who started his Special Olympics career in 2001, has previously competed in soccer, basketball, tennis, snowshoe and other events.

“It’s disappointing that we can’t have large-scale events and gatherings, but we are excited to be back doing what we love,” he said. “Sports!”

His teammate behind him threw his fist in the air.

The small gathering stood in stark contrast to the boisterous crowd of thousands of athletes and law enforcement officials who have rallied around the torch lighting each year.

For 50 years, Special Olympics Maryland has fostered community for thousands of people with disabilities. Weekly trainings and annual tournaments have provided opportunities for connection and purpose, inspiring confidence among people historically subjected to social ostracism.

But when the pandemic took hold in March,

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The controversy over claims the Saratoga Prosperity Partnership’s downloading and sharing of a confidential Saratoga Economic Development Committee Zoom meeting continues with board resignations and an investigation.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Partnership will be briefed on a report by an attorney the group hired to investigate the matter amid SEDC’s accusations that its civil liberties were violated by the distribution of a video of one of its meetings. SEDC is a private nonprofit and its meetings are not open to the public.

The Partnership report follows the departure of four from the SEDC board: Saratoga Hospital President and CEO Angelo Calbone, land-use attorney Matt Jones, Adirondack Trust Executive Vice President Michael O’Connell and Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce President Todd Shimkus.

“It doesn’t have a negative effect,” said SEDC Board Chair John Munter Jr. of the board resignations. “They all left for different reasons. The feeling was

Humana’s (HUM) MA Members Gain From Better Health Outcomes

| Better Health

Humana Inc. HUM recently announced its annual Value-based Care Report, according to which 2.41 million Humana individual Medicare Advantage beneficiaries in value-based models experienced improved health outcomes along with lower expenditure on average. This was opposed to fee-for-service models.

The results reflect data collected during the calendar year 2019. Value-based care is patient-centric and is aimed at improving health outcomes. Humana has been constantly tying up with local companies, which have the same commitment to serve communities with quality healthcare. Value-based care models include integrated care delivery.

Details of MA Plans

Humana individual Medicare Advantage members also benefited from preventive screenings. With the aid of these plans, Humana MA members stayed within the comforts of their homes instead of hospitals. In fact, Humana MA members enjoyed healthcare at lower costs. Had the company’s MA members been under the Original Medicare’s fee-for-service model instead of value-based agreements, then they would have

Tidelands’ virtual fitness classes offer members at-home workout option | Myrtle Beach Area News

PAWLEYS ISLAND — When Tidelands Health surveyed its fitness members, they learned quickly several of their members didn’t want to come back due to COVID-19 concerns.

“We wanted to be able to reach them,” said Kim Vanlandingham, manager of Tidelands HealthPoint Center for Health and Fitness.

HealthPoint has in-person classes in Pawleys Island, which is where Tidelands does its streaming.

“There’s a lot of risk emotionally and physically associated with just being sedentary. So we wanted to make sure everybody was staying with their exercise program,” Vanlandingham continued.

That’s when Tidelands Health expedited pre-COVID plans to stream fitness classes online.

In September, it launched virtual membership for classes such as Zumba, pilates and yoga through a live-streamed format. For $15 per month, members can get their fitness classes in, from the comfort of their own home.

“In general, our facility has a strong social connection with our members,” Vanlandingham said.

Health Department urges safe Halloween with household members at home and not trick-or-treating

October 7, 2020

| Dept Of Health

The Department of Health is encouraging everyone to find fun alternatives to Halloween traditions to avoid “the scare of being exposed or spreading the coronavirus.”

DOH recommends celebrating with household members at home and avoiding trick-or-treating door to door or wherever treats are handed to children or taken from a shared bucket.

This would involve what DOH classifies as a high-risk activity since it may result in close contact or crowding with others outside one’s household.

“It’s more important to put safety first,” Health Director Elizabeth Char said in a news release. “Gatherings on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day led to spikes in positive cases in Hawaii.

“This Halloween, be extra mindful as you navigate how to safely celebrate in order to keep the spread of coronavirus as low as possible during this holiday.”

Some fun and safe activities being planned by some communities include contactless trick-or-treating and

Teen spurs coronavirus outbreak, infects 11 family members

October 6, 2020

| Health

A coronavirus outbreak infecting 11 family members, stemming from a 13-year-old girl, recently prompted an investigation by several state health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The teen was away from home in June when she was exposed to a large coronavirus outbreak. While she was asymptomatic, a rapid antigen test conducted four days after exposure came back negative, per a new CDC report.

HOW DO I POLITELY ASK SOMEONE TO WEAR A MASK?

A couple of days later, shortly before accompanying her siblings and parents on a large family vacation, the only symptom the young girl developed was nasal congestion.

A total of 14 relatives, ages ranging from 9 to 72, stayed together for up to three weeks in a five-bedroom house, ignoring masks and social distancing. The CDC says 12 of the 14 family members developed symptoms and had either probable, suspected, or confirmed COVID-19

Marine Corps commanders may issue waivers for Marines, or even whole units, for semi-annual combat fitness tests if the testing sites cannot accommodate safety measures to protect against the coronavirus, a spokesman for III Marine Expeditionary Force on Okinawa said Monday.

The Corps is putting mitigating steps in place, such as screening Marines and taking their temperatures before the tests, disinfecting equipment and mandating face masks, said 1st Lt. Pawel Puczko by email to Stars and Stripes. He said Marines who are at a higher risk of contracting the coronavirus or share quarters with someone who is at a higher
