FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -The COVID-19 pandemic has had a variety of impacts on the community, and has affected many in different ways. Dr. Mariana McIlwain, audiologist with the Fairbanks Hearing and Balance talks about how the hearing impaired community has been affected by the pandemic.

“The year 2020 has been a very difficult year for all of us. One thing that has been particularly challenging is the way we communicate and interact with others. It’s just an eye opening experience to realize just how much we use our face to communicate,” said McIlwain.

Lip reading and facial recognition are important components of human interaction, especially for those who have underlying hearing loss. For them these visual cues can be essential to understanding and participating in everyday environments. McIlwain told us, “With the measures to decrease the spread of COVID-19

“We have worked very hard to slow the spread of COVID by taking a measured approach to protect the community,” according to a statement from the Metro Public Health Department in Nashville.

“The Health Department is very concerned by the actions that took place at the event and we are investigating and will pursue appropriate penalties against the organizer.”

Sean Feucht, a Christian worship musician in Northern California and creator of the faith-based political activist movement Hold The Line, led the event in front of the Nashville Metro Courthouse on Sunday.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s education superintendent said she has sent $43 million of protective equipment to more than 1,300 schools in the state — fulfilling every item in their requests to help them open for in-person classes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

And Superintendent Molly Spearman promised Tuesday there is enough money left in the billions of dollars the federal government sent to South Carolina for pandemic help to pay for whatever else schools ask for as she urges every school district to get children back in classrooms at least part of the time.

“You may hear some of them saying we need more things. We are telling them, let us know what you need. We have the funding to get it for you,” Spearman said.

The latest purchases include 300,000 sheets of Plexiglass, which Spearman cited health experts who have told her when combined with masks cut the

Avoid large gatherings without masks

WASHINGTON — Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious-disease expert, is again cautioning against large-scale gatherings of people without masks.

President Donald Trump is planning to convene another large crowd outside the White House on Saturday. Trump’s Rose Garden event announcing Judge Amy Coney Barrett as his Supreme Court nominee on Sept. 26 has been labeled a “super-spreader” for the coronavirus.

Fauci said of the Rose Garden event in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday: “I was not surprised to see a super-spreader event given the circumstances. Crowded, congregate setting, not wearing masks. It is not surprising to see an outbreak.”

Fauci says the CDC guideline for getting people back into society generally “is 10 days from the onset of your symptoms.”

That onset for Trump was Oct. 1, according to his doctors. The president’s White House doctor, Navy Cmdr. Sean Conley, said Trump could return to holding

Detroit issues COVID-19 order that requires masks, social distancing

Detroiters must wear a mask at indoor and outdoor gatherings and businesses must maintain social distancing and capacity limits, Detroit city officials announced Friday.

Detroit Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair issued a new COVID-19 public health order which takes effect immediately and reinstates aspects of the emergency declarations previously issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, which were undercut by a state Supreme Court ruling. The state health department on Friday issued a sweeping order that largely mirrors those put in place by Whitmer.

Detroit’s order gives guidance for businesses, schools, workplaces and public gatherings to curb the spread of COVID-19.

“If you live, visit or operate a business in the city of Detroit, you only have to look in one place and that’s Director Fair’s order,” Mayor Mike Duggan said Friday. “And what we are going to do is make sure the city has certainty and continuity.”

Women Are Better Than Men at Wearing Masks and Following Coronavirus Precautions, Study Finds

In most states, people are required to wear a mask in public places to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. But women do a far better job of wearing masks than men, a new study found.

Women are also more likely than men to follow all COVID-19 precautions, like washing hands, staying home and social distancing. Plus, they’re more likely to follow news about the virus from medical experts, their governor, social media and by reading about how other countries have handled the pandemic — and in turn, experience anxiety and alarm.

For the study, published in the journal Behavioral Science & Policy, researchers at New York University and Yale University surveyed 800 people about their COVID-19 habits, counted mask-wearers on the street over two days and analyzed Americans’ movements with smartphone data.
