Democrats Zero In on President’s Fitness for Office as Election Looms

October 9, 2020

WASHINGTON — Speaker Nancy Pelosi, amplifying questions about President Trump’s fitness for office less than a month before the election, introduced legislation on Friday that would create a standing bipartisan group of outside experts tasked with evaluating the president’s mental and physical health and advising Congress on whether the commander in chief’s powers should be forcibly removed under the 25th Amendment.

The measure is certain to die at the end of the year, given that it would need a presidential signature to be enacted. But Democrats’ decision to promote it now — after the president’s coronavirus diagnosis and as Ms. Pelosi has suggested that his treatment might be affecting his judgment — was an unmistakable dig at the sitting president’s capacity to govern, just weeks before voters go to the polls.

“A president’s fitness for office must be determined by science and facts,” Ms. Pelosi said at a news conference

Health care providers brace for ‘twindemic’ as flu season looms amid COVID-19 outbreaks | Local Health News

| Community Health

Health officials across the U.S. are bracing for flu season while in the midst of battling the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a phenomenon many in the healthcare community have dubbed the “twindemic.”

Local doctors, pharmacists and healthcare providers are advocating for as many people in Aiken County to get vaccinated for influenza as soon as possible. They hope that early preparation can help prevent people from being infected by multiple respiratory illnesses like colds, strep throat and coronavirus that will be circulating this fall.

“This is going to be the season,” said Dr. Kenneth Jones, chief medical officer at Rural Health Services. “We’ve never had anything like this before. It’s all new, so we’re going to have to figure it out as we go along. We’re probably going to end up over-treating some people, but I’d rather over treat than under-treat at this time.”

It is possible to become infected with

Mental Health ‘Tsunami’ Looms: Can CA Prevent A Suicide Surge?

Humboldt County, tucked into the redwoods on the state’s far North Coast, also has a much higher suicide rate than most of California. The pandemic has fueled new concerns.

Celinda Gonzales has a long list of worries: She worries about COVID-19, which recently spiked near the Yurok reservation where she lives in Humboldt County. She worries about the wildfires threatening her remote, forested town, Weitchpec.

She worries about gill rot and algae blooms in the Klamath and Trinity rivers, which join together just over the hill from her trailer; she worries, too, about what the resulting small salmon runs mean for her financially struggling community.

And she worries about the prospect of more suicides.
“It’s very hard to stay mentally strong right now,” she said.

For several years, Gonzales, 53, has worked in suicide prevention in the northwestern corner of California, famous for its rocky coastlines and breathtaking forests. It

As Covid-19 Looms, Some Workers Face Loss of Health Insurance

“Health insurance is an enormous cost for small businesses,” said Amanda Ballantyne, the executive director of the Main Street Alliance, an advocacy group for small businesses. “It continues to be even after the passage of the Affordable Care Act.”

Many businesses say they need Congress to provide more money, and health insurers say they support federal efforts to help employers continue their coverage. “We believe Congress should provide temporary subsidies or direct financial assistance for employers to protect the health and financial stability of hard-working Americans,” said Justine Handelman, a senior vice president at the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, which represents the nation’s Blue Cross plans.

Under the Affordable Care Act, insurers must return the excess profits if they do not spend at least 80 or 85 cents out of every dollar in premiums on customers’ health care. But even that provision strikes some as inadequate, given the current
