| Dept Of Health

Officials at South Carolina’s leading health agency are strongly encouraging flu vaccinations in light of ongoing health crises caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health experts from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control are urging flu shots with the hope that early vaccination can help flatten the state’s curve of influenza infections, fearing that an influx of flu-related hospitalizations could exacerbate issues hospitals are already facing as they deal with the worst public health crisis in a century.

“This year, this may be the most important flu shot of your life,” said Dr. Brannon Traxler, interim S.C. DHEC public health director, in a news release. “We’re experiencing the worst public health crisis in 100 years, and it’s never been more important for each and every one of us to stay as healthy as possible. We owe it to ourselves, our loved ones, and the essential workers and first responders

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In an extraordinary operation, a Mississippi man’s heart was removed and replaced with what Baptist Memorial Hospital doctors call a “total artificial heart” — battery-charged electromechanical devices that will keep the 41-year-old man’s blood pumping until a heart transplant can be arranged.

Knocking out pregnancy discomforts with food

Pregnancy can come with discomforts like nausea, fluid retention, heartburn and constipation. Registered dietitian Willow Jarosh shares recipes from her book “Healthy, Happy Pregnancy Cookbook” to help counterbalance some of those symptoms

Women who have kids later on in life may live longer, according to the findings of a recent study.

Following the birth of a woman’s last child, certain measurements may be linked with her projected lifespan, according to a study published Wednesday in Menopause, the journal of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

More specifically, leukocyte telomere length – telomeres “are repeating DNA-protein complexes that protect the ends of chromosomes and have proven to be critical for maintaining genomic stability,” per a news release on the findings – may play a role in a woman’s longevity. A woman’s age at the birth of her last child may affect telomere length, ultimately impacting

Eating healthy on a budget.
Eating healthy on a budget.

Shana Spence says she’s an “eat-anything” dietitian: she encourages her clients to eat what they actually enjoy. When it comes to food, she says to focus on what nourishes your body, fills you up, and doesn’t break the bank.

Life Kit consulted Spence for advice on how to cut back costs on food while still eating nutritious meals.

Foods labeled “organic” and “non-GMO” are often viewed as the “top shelf” or “name brand” healthy food – and they’re priced that way too. But, there are lots of affordable and wholesome alternatives (hello frozen veggies!).

Minding your budget while eating the foods that nourish you takes a little planning — but it’s possible. Here are some of Spence’s tips to help you grocery shop and keep your fridge stocked.

Embrace frugality

From personal experience and working with clients, Spence says many people are “self-conscious” about not being able to afford “fancy”

Where You Live at 50 Could Determine Life Expectancy

October 8, 2020

One explanation: “Counties with a higher percentage of residents of color could also have a higher number of segregated neighborhoods and communities,” and segregated communities can concentrate poverty, the report points out, further restricting access to quality schools, safe parks, good jobs, and banks and capital for business development. Chronic stress from systemic racism and discrimination in health care have also put predominantly Black communities at a disadvantage when it comes to life expectancy.

“Evidence is clear that counties with more Black residents are having worse outcomes, and it’s incumbent on all of us to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to live a longer and healthier life,” Tan says.

“Those extra years are another anniversary, potentially another grandchild — that’s what people are missing out on.”

The coronavirus pandemic and life expectancy

Though the data in the report predates the coronavirus pandemic, Tan says COVID-19 — which has

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Oct. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Bravado Health recently announced a partnership with Better Life Partners to help achieve their goal of helping vulnerable populations achieve healthier lives.

Better Life Partners was created to help those with opioid use disorder (OUD) achieve lasting and meaningful recoveries. While COVID-19 has dominated the headlines for the past several months, it is important to remember that there is a very real and powerful opioid epidemic in this country as well. This crisis has worsened in recent years and projections indicate these drugs could kill more than half a million Americans in the next decade.

Although help is available, many suffering from OUD lack access to high-quality health care.
