DC charters lead the way on in-school teaching experiment

October 12, 2020

| Health

WASHINGTON (AP) — While most of the kids in Washington’s public schools are dealing with computer screens and Zoom rooms, a dozen students work diligently at their desks at Meridian Charter School, many separated by tall, three-sided partitions that were originally set up as protection against COVID-19.

Head of School Matt McCrea said administrators later realized the enclosures wouldn’t do much to prevent the spread of the virus. Now the cardboard is optional, but more than half of the students still use them as personalized organizers — taping up calendars, decorations and schedules.

“It’s all a learning experience and it’s all playing out in real time,” McCrea said.

While the mainstream public school system in the nation’s capital was forced to start the year with total distance learning for all its approximately 52,000 students, about a dozen charter schools have essentially chosen to become medical-educational experiments, offering in-person instruction for

Cleveland Clinic names physician to lead virtual health

October 8, 2020
| Health Magazine

Cleveland Clinic on Thursday announced Dr. Steven Shook, a neurologist, will serve as the health system’s virtual health lead.

Shook will report to Dr. James Merlino, Cleveland Clinic’s chief clinical transformation officer, in the new role, where he will develop and monitor the health system’s virtual health strategy. Shook will also work closely with Josette Beran, Cleveland Clinic’s chief strategy officer, according to the health system.

Merlino appointed Shook to the virtual health role after an internal search.

Shook, who joined Cleveland Clinic as a staff neurologist in 2007, teaches at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and previously served as quality improvement officer and vice chair of operations in the health system’s neurological institute.

Cleveland Clinic joins a growing number of health systems carving out telehealth leadership roles as virtual care has skyrocketed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Telehealth proved a powerful interim avenue for physicians to continue seeing

What’s in store for the exec tapped to lead Cook County Health

Rocha, 42, declined an interview request through a CCH spokeswoman. “Out of respect for the formal process, it would be premature for me to say anything more than I look forward to the next steps,” he said in an email from the spokeswoman.

As a vice president at NYC Health + Hospitals, Rocha has served as CEO of Elmhurst Hospital since 2016 and CEO of Queens Hospital since earlier this year.

The 11-hospital system, with 42,000 employees, was inundated with COVID-19 cases this year, having gone from no hospitalized coronavirus patients on March 1 to 3,700 patients by April 1, system CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz recently told Modern Healthcare. The experience challenged the system to think differently about keeping up with demand, as increasing staffing numbers only hikes costs, Katz said.

Rocha “has deep experience with handling the unexpected twists and turns of this virus. . . .He has run

We’ve all done it before. Presented with a new ache, pain or rash, we turn to the internet to find out what’s wrong. Typically, the search results include a myriad of health problems ranging in severity from “it will go away on its own” to “you only have months to live.”

It’s not surprising that these types of searches could make people feel anxious about their health. Now a new body of evidence explains what’s going on.

A systematic review conducted by mental health researchers in Australia looked at the body of evidence on Internet health searches and anxiety.

The authors include 20 studies with more than 7,300 participants in total that explored the relationship between health anxiety and seeking health information online. They found that the internet provides a wealth of health information that can help people to better understand their own health, how to prevent

Investors eye discounted U.S. healthcare sector as Biden’s lead in polls grows

October 8, 2020

| Health News

By Lewis Krauskopf

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Investors are looking for bargains among healthcare stocks, even as prospect of a Democratic “Blue Sweep” in next month’s elections threatens more volatility for a sector already trading near a historical discount to the broader market.

A victory by former Vice President Joe Biden over President Donald Trump on Nov. 3 and a potential Democratic takeover of the Senate could clear the way for prescription drug price and healthcare coverage reforms, generally seen as potential negatives for companies in the sector.

Some investors are betting these factors have already been priced into healthcare shares or may not be as detrimental as feared, while the companies stand to benefit from relatively stable earnings prospects and their medical innovations.

“For high-quality companies that are trading at reasonable valuations … there is a strong argument to be made for adding some healthcare exposure to portfolios,” said

big health problems lead to big health spending

October 7, 2020

| Health Issues

The pandemic – and developments in health care – have forced the Commonwealth government to commit to a massive increase in spending on health care this year.

In the 2019-20 budget, the Commonwealth promised an increase of A$540 million in health spending in 2020-21. In this year’s version, delivered by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg last night, the promise is an order of magnitude greater: an uplift of $5.347 billion since the last economic statement.

During 2020-21 and 2021-22, likely to be the biggest years for the COVID-19 response, the Commonwealth is promising almost $10 billion of extra spending. Never before has the federal government opened the health purse strings to this extent.

Although there are 35 items in the health budget measures table – all detailed in a 163-page “Stakeholder Pack” – just five of them account for 94% of the increase in spending.
