Vice Presidential Debate Fact Check: Kamala Harris, Mike Pence face off in Salt Lake City

October 8, 2020

| Health Facts

WASHINGTON — Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris tussled Wednesday in the first and only vice presidential debate before the Nov. 3 election, coming as the coronavirus sidelined President Donald Trump at the White House.

A look at how the running mates’ statements from Salt Lake City stack up with the facts:

HEALTH CARE

PENCE: “President Trump and I have a plan to improve health care and to protect preexisting conditions for all Americans.”

THE FACTS: There is no clear plan. People with preexisting conditions are already protected by the Obama-era Affordable Care Act, and if the Trump administration succeeds in persuading the Supreme Court to overturn it, those protections will be jeopardy.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order declaring it the policy of the U.S. government to protect people with preexisting conditions, but Trump would have to go back to Congress to work out legislation

Lake Houston area’s In the Pink shifts to online fundraiser amid pandemic

October 7, 2020

| Health

Amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, the In the Loop campaign will replace the yearly In the Pink of Health Luncheon to raise money for Project Mammogram, which helps uninsured people receive free breast cancer screenings and services.

As the primary fundraising event for Project Mammogram, the annual In the Pink of Health Luncheon celebrates survivors, remembers those who are lost and offers a time for everyone to contribute in one way or another. The fundraiser last year was a bustling event lined with pink that featured large gift baskets for bid, a corner shop, an enormous ballroom filled with banquet tables and topped off with a server in a champagne flute dress handing out glasses and posing for photos.

The city has seen a rise in new cases over the last month.

• 5 min read

Salt Lake City’s latest rise in novel coronavirus cases has affected dozens of the city’s police officers, with at least 9% under quarantine ahead of Wednesday night’s vice presidential debate.

As of Tuesday evening, 17 officers tested positive for COVID-19, and 52 were in quarantine, Detective Michael Ruff told ABC News. On Monday, the department said 15 officers tested positive and 25 others were under quarantine.

A 2019 report by the Salt Lake City police department said the force had 542 uniformed officers, and Ruff could not say how much that number has changed over the year.

Ruff the department’s duties during the debate at the University of Utah shouldn’t be hindered because other agencies, including the university police,

As part of the transition to Epic, Phelps Health patients and their designated caregivers can access their health information 24/7 in MyChart, Epic’s patient-facing app, on their phone, tablet or computer.

Phelps Health launched Epic, the most widely-used and comprehensive health record in the United States, to support doctors and staff in improving the health and wellness of people in the region.

Whether patients visit any of Phelps Health’s clinics or providers’ offices, need to go to the emergency department, get lab work or medical imaging services, or are admitted to the hospital, they will now have all of their health information in a single electronic health record with Epic.

Phelps Health providers can see a patient’s care history and coordinate care with providers outside of the organization who serve their patients and families, closing care gaps and reducing duplication.

“We are proud to work with Epic, which is providing

Public Health Closes Palmer Lake Due To Toxic Algae Bloom

October 2, 2020

| Dept Of Health

GIG HARBOR, WA — The Tacoma – Pierce County Health Department has closed Palmer Lake on Key Peninsula after an algae bloom turned the water toxic.

Earlier, the county health department had issued a caution advisory, simply telling residents to stay away from parts of the lake that had visible algae.

However, experts ran a routine check to see if conditions had improved Monday, and when results came back Thursday, they showed the lake had high levels of toxins. As a result, public health has closed the lake to all visitors.

The lake will remain closed for at least two weeks, though crews will return to test the water again next week. The results of that test will determine if the bloom remains, and when the lake might be reopened to the public.

The closure means people and pets alike should stay clear of the water. That includes swimming, wading,

Traces of coronavirus found in Lake Superior water, researchers say

October 1, 2020

| Health Article

Traces of the novel coronavirus were found in water samples taken from Lake Superior beaches in Duluth, Minn., according to researchers with the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth campus.

Since July, researchers have collected water samples from eight different beaches in Duluth in an effort to better understand how the novel virus “acts in the water and whether it can spread there,” the Star Tribune reported. (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there is “no evidence that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can spread to people through water” at oceans, lakes and other natural bodies of water, as well as pools, water playgrounds and hot tubs.)

"The research team describes the detection level at 100 to 1,000 copies per liter, or 10,000 times lower than levels observed in wastewater," the researchers said.

Winston Churchill did something compelling when Nazi bombers attacked London at the start of World War II. Instead of rushing to a bomb shelter, he climbed to a rooftop so he could see what was happening. After the attacks, he visited bombed-out sites to see the impact on the communities he served.

“Churchill toured the worst-hit areas on foot,” one historian recalled. His bodyguard said, “He could no more stay out of a raid than he could sit still in a debate in Parliament.”

My point is to invite Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Vice President Mike Pence to take this same kind of close-up look at health care when they come to
