Children largely escaped the first wave of COVID, but they may be at the epicenter of a new health crisis stemming from the pandemic, a top national health official said Tuesday in Columbus.

That’s because the routine became rare during at least the first several months of the coronavirus outbreak: child vaccinations, wellness screenings, mental health care and dental visits — especially for low-income children.

“If we are not careful in how we address this, we could give rise to a second public health crisis and that’s the impact of all this foregone care, whether it’s increases in routine illnesses because we’ve missed vaccinations or the screenings not detecting issues in children,” said

The Ohio Governor also advocated for families to return to their doctors for well-child visits

COLUMBUS, Ohio — During Tuesday afternoon’s press briefing, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine made a large push for families to vaccinate their children for preventable diseases.

Governor DeWine said that although there is not a vaccine ready and available that prevents COVID-19, it is more important than ever to make sure kids are immunized for diseases and illnesses that are able to be stopped.

At the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic in Ohio, Governor DeWine said the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) saw a steep drop in vaccinations for diseases like whooping cough and the chicken pox, but that “we’re starting to catch up on these numbers, but there’s still some reason to be concerned.”

October 13, 2020

AUSTIN, Texas — Advocates for children are calling on Texas lawmakers to take action in the next legislative session, after a new report shows the state has the highest number of children in the nation without health insurance.

Texas had an estimated 995,000 uninsured children in 2019, an increase of 243,000 from three years earlier. Data in the annual report from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families was collected in 2019, during a relatively strong economic period.

Patrick Bresette, executive director at the Children’s Defense Fund-Texas, said he was startled by the dramatic increase – especially because the data was collected

Natural History of Kids’ Benign Bone Tumors; Sarcoma Staging; Pathologic Fractures

October 13, 2020

| Health Article

Almost 20% of asymptomatic children and adolescents had benign bone tumors of the extremities, a review of a longitudinal radiographic collection showed.

Overall, 35 benign tumors were identified in 33 pediatric patients whose median age was 8. The most commonly identified tumor types were non-ossifying fibromas (NOF, 7.5%), enostoses (5.2%), osteochondromas (4.5%), and enchondromas (1.8%).

The findings came from a review of the Brush Inquiry, a collection of 25,555 radiographs and 262 healthy children. The x-rays were all left-sided views of each patient’s upper and lower extremities. The overall incidence of benign tumors in the asymptomatic population was 18.9%, and the median age at detection after a previous negative radiograph was 9 years. NOFs were the only tumor type that resolved over time, Christopher D. Collier, MD, of the University of Chicago, reported during the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) virtual meeting.

“The goal of this study was to give us

Irate moms hit out at fitness fanatics working out in their kids’ playgrounds

October 12, 2020

| Health And Fitness

It’s the battle of the monkey bars.

Fed up moms in New York City have had enough of fitness freaks using kids’ playgrounds as makeshift gyms now that workout facilities are operating at limited capacity due to COVID-19.

They’ve labeled the sweaty musclemen — and women — “gross” and “selfish” for increasingly monopolizing equipment designed for toddlers.

According to parents, some don’t wear masks and could pose a health hazard during the pandemic.

“It’s unfair on the children,” said mom of one Ashley Ann Capone, of Astoria Heights, Queens, who regularly visits her neighborhood playground, Sean’s Place, on 38th Street. “They can feel intimidated by them and can’t play properly because of their presence.”

October 12, 2020

| Community Health

ANN ARBOR, MI – School administrators have signed a joint letter with the Washtenaw County Health Department urging the broader community to continue preventing the spread of COVID-19 so children can get back to face-to-face learning.

The letter was signed by the leaders of 29 public, charter, private and independent schools across Washtenaw County.

“As we return to face-to-face instruction, we want to be sure we are prioritizing the health and safety of our students, families, and staff,” Washtenaw Intermediate School District Interim Superintendent Naomi Norman said in a news release. “With over 50,000 students and 15,000 staff across our schools, health and safety is of utmost importance.

“When schools need to unexpectedly transition from open to closed to open again due to positive COVID-19 cases, it puts a burden on students, families, staff and our broader community. We are taking safety very seriously by providing remote options and enacting

Kids struggle with Covid-19 and its months of aftermath

She is a Covid-19 long hauler, along with her sister Audrey and mother Jamie.

One of her friends came home in March after spending two years in Wuhan, China. That may have been the source of the virus that would cut across the whole Richmond family and leave them with six months — and counting — of fatigue, pain and uncertainty in its wake.

Jamie Richmond has tallied $6,000 in medical bills for two girls who were healthy until March.

Both girls now have a host of problems, including postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which causes a person’s heart rate to shoot up upon standing and lead to dizziness or fainting.

“It’s been horrific to go through this for so long,” Richmond said.

More than 657,000 children and teens across the United States had tested positive for the virus as of October 1, according

COVID Will Likely Make 300,000 Kids Lose Health Insurance

October 12, 2020

| Health Plans

According to a series of new reports, one from the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute’s Center for Children and Families, and another from the Urban Institute, the state of health insurance for American children is bleak — and has been getting worse since President Trump took office in 2016. The past two years have represented a rapid expansion of the uninsured rate of American kids, and 2020 is expected to be even worse, with some 300,000+ kids expected to lose their insurance due to massive unemployment and the oncoming economic recession. After all, millions of American parents lost their jobs because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and millions of those American parents as a result lost their health insurance, which in America, is tied to employment. Since Americans can usually only access health insurance when they have a job that offers it, losing their job represents a massive blow to their

Kristen Bell opens up about prioritizing her kids’ mental health amid Covid-19

Kristen Bell has been keeping a rather close eye on her kids now that they are spending most of their time indoors and it appears the mother-of-two is more worried about her children’s mental health than their school work amid distance learning and quarantine.

With 40 years of expertise now behind her, Bell has been passing on her advice towards her young kids Delta and Lincoln.

During her interview with PEOPLE magazine, the Frozen actress was quoted saying, “I’m going to prioritize her mental health, just like I prioritize my mental health, and if she is too overwhelmed, I’m going to shut the computer and take a 5-minute break.”

Amid her struggles to maintain positivity in her house, Bell has even taken some pages from her partner Shepard’s book and believes, “‘One day or one year is not
