Support and intervention needed to protect wellbeing of health care workers after Ebola outbreak

As we approach a second wave of COVID-19 researchers are looking at what can be learnt from countries affected by the Ebola outbreak in order to better safeguard the mental health of health care workers in the UK and across the globe.

A recent report (link is external) by researchers from the ARISE consortium (link is external) and REDRESS project has outlined some of the psychological challenges faced by health staff in crisis situations, and the importance of early support and intervention to protect mental health and wellbeing.

Psychological support for health workers should be built into the COVID-19 response and subsequent emergency responses, the report published in the British Medical Journal has said.

Marion City Council votes to approve new crisis counselor position for police department for intervention on mental health calls

The Marion Police Department will soon have a crisis counselor embedded within the department.

During its Thursday night meeting, the Marion City Council voted unanimously to approve the agreement between the department and Foundation 2 Crisis Services for the law enforcement liaison. Foundation 2 is a nonprofit human services agency that offers mobile crisis services.

The crisis counselor will work with police officers on intervention regarding mental health-related calls to help with de-escalation and to assess where individuals should be referred for treatment and follow up services.

According to a department news release, the anticipated benefits of the new arrangement include a reduction in officer time spent responding to mental health-related calls, diverting individuals with mental health concerns from jail to behavioral health treatment, onsite consultation for officers regarding community interactions related to mental health, a reduction in officer’s use of force by utilizing alternative techniques and an increase in

Pathways Acquires Three Subsidiaries of Community Intervention Services, Inc. (CIS)

Pathways Health and Community Support, LLC (Pathways), one of the largest providers of behavioral and mental health services in the United States, announced today it has completed its acquisition of three Community Intervention Services (CIS) companies: Access Family Services (AFS), Family Behavioral Resources (FBR) and Autism Education and Research Institute (AERI), which will operate as one entity (FBR-AERI). The three CIS companies are large, clinically focused providers of community-based behavioral health and substance use services in the eastern United States.

The acquisition makes it possible for Pathways to expand and strengthen its presence in Pennsylvania and North Carolina and add new service lines in South Carolina. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
