Colorado in “third wave” of COVID-19 as hospitalizations reach highest level since May, state health director says

October 13, 2020

| Dept Of Health

More Colorado residents are in the hospital for COVID-19 than at any point since late May, as hospitalizations surged past the peak of the state’s summer spike.

As of Monday, 288 people were hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Colorado. The last time more patients were receiving hospital-level care for the virus was May 31, when the spring wave of the new coronavirus was receding.

Cases also took a turn upward last week after falling slightly the previous week. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported 4,979 cases in the week ending Sunday, which is about 900 cases more than the state saw during the single-biggest week of the July surge.

The state did perform more tests last week than in late July, but the increasing rate of tests coming back positive indicates that’s not the only reason the number of cases is growing. About 4.5% of

Positive Virus Tests, Hospitalizations Surge in Colorado | Colorado News

DENVER (AP) — Colorado is experiencing another surge of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, prompting Gov. Jared Polis to plead Tuesday with residents to wear masks, stay home as much as possible, and maintain social distancing practices.

As of Tuesday, Colorado’s three-day average positivity rate — the percentage of total tests coming in positive — was 5.4%, and the state recorded 1,000 newly confirmed cases both Saturday and Monday, the highest daily numbers recorded during the pandemic, Polis said.

About 290 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the highest total since May 31, The Denver Post reported.

During a briefing on the pandemic, Polis didn’t suggest he was contemplating renewed mandatory restrictions on business or other activities to stem the surge. But he insisted: “If this continues, our hospital capacity will be in jeopardy.”

The World Health Organization recommends trying to keep the positivity rate below 5% of all tests.

A 25-year-old Nevada man was the first American confirmed to have caught COVID-19 twice, and his second infection was worse than the first.

USA TODAY

Coronavirus cases are rising in Michigan and COVID-19 hospitalizations have spiked 80% in recent weeks, climbing in all regions of the state, health officials warned Tuesday.

“It is very possible that this is the beginning of a second wave,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the chief medical executive and chief deputy director for health for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

“That is why we are asking everyone to remain vigilant and do these basic things: wearing masks, avoiding the social gatherings. It’s very important.”

As COVID-19 hospitalizations increase in Nebraska, metro Omaha, health systems plan for surge | Live Well

| Health Plans

Hospital officials are not sounding the alarm, however.

Dr. Cliff Robertson, CHI Health’s chief executive, said Thursday that if needed, his health system has the ability to nearly double its capacity to 2,000 beds. Robertson said CHI Health hospitals also could increase the number of intensive care beds by using post-op recovery rooms and operating rooms.

“As a health system, we still have plenty of capacity,” he said.

Officials with Methodist Health System said they have plans in place for potential patient surges related to COVID-19.

“We’re all seeing an uptick in COVID-19 numbers across the communities we serve,” said Steve Goeser, president and CEO of the health system, “and our planning and preparedness continues.”

In an interview with the Associated Press, Cory Shaw, chief operating officer for Nebraska Medicine’s hospital and clinics, said, “Obviously, we’re concerned. But as of right now, we are in a good place in terms

Since the coronavirus pandemic started, the United States has recorded more than 7.6 million cases of COVID-19 and 213,000 deaths.

USA TODAY

Coronavirus hospitalizations were continuing a dangerous trend in the United States while Brazil and India each reached ominous milestones as the global pandemic showed little sign of retreat Sunday.

Hospitalizations, which peaked at nearly 60,000 across the nation in July, had fallen by more than half last month. But since dipping below 29,000 on Sept. 20, the number of people being treated in hospitals each day has crept higher, to almost 35,000.

And a USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins data through late Saturday shows 11 states set records for new cases for a seven-day period – Alaska, Colorado, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota and Utah. The U.S. has recorded its fourth consecutive day of more than 50,000 new COVID-19 cases,

Dallas County adds 460 confirmed coronavirus cases, 1 death; officials warn of rising hospitalizations

October 10, 2020
| Dept Of Health

Dallas County reported 460 more confirmed coronavirus cases Saturday, including 455 which the county considers new and five from previous months. One new COVID-19 death was also reported.

Labs either report coronavirus cases directly to the county health department or to the state health department, which then relays the information to individual counties. Of cases reported Saturday, Dallas County health officials said 167 came from the state’s reporting system, including one from March, four from September and 162 from October. The remaining 293 cases were reported directly to the county health department.

The latest victim was a woman in her 80s who lived in a long-term care facility in Richardson. She died at the facility and did not have any underlying health conditions.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins urged people to continue following public health precautions including social distancing and masking wearing, citing an increase in the county’s hospitalizations.

Coronavirus Hospitalizations In Cook County Suburbs Up By 35%

October 10, 2020
| Health

COOK COUNTY, IL — New regional COVID-19 mitigations lifted on one area of Illinois this week and imposed on another, as rising coronavirus positivity rates in neighboring regions risk triggering additional restrictions.

Suburban Cook County, Region 10, saw hospitalizations rise by nearly 35 percent, even as the positivity rate slightly declined during the first week of October, falling by 0.2 percentage points to 5 percent on Tuesday, the most recent day where data is available from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

During the same period, daily new hospitalizations of patients with “COVID-like illnesses,” or CLI, rose from a rounded rolling average of 23 people a day to 31 people a day on Oct. 6.

Only one region is currently subject to increased restrictions to limit the spread of coronavirus as part of the 11-region Restore Illinois COVID-19 resurgence plan, as of Friday. It is the third region where public

AZ Dept. of Health Services working to correct errors in COVID-19 data | COVID-19 Hospitalizations

October 9, 2020

| Dept Of Health

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – The Arizona Department of Health Services has been working to fix errors in it’s COVID-19 data.  While some information has been updated, the department has spent days to address other problems.

In a blog entry this week, the ADHS Director Dr. Cara Christ said “a large healthcare provider” was reporting dates for patients being admitted to the hospital “when these individuals were not actually hospitalized.” The blog goes on to say the dates reported actually reflected dates the “the individual was seen by a healthcare provider.”

“A lot of people are relying on this information for planning purposes and to make decisions,” says former ADHS director, Will Humble. “I think we’re lucky that the problems have happened when we are in a little bit of a lull.”

Humble says hospitalization stats were crucial over the summer when the hospital resources and staff were pushed to the
