Despite a family medical emergency, ‘Ya Fav Trashman’ holds a food drive for Philly’s frontline workers as COVID cases rise

Terrill Haigler, more widely known as Ya Fav Trashman, the Instagram account he created to plead for hazard pay, masks and gloves for sanitation workers amid the coronavirus pandemic, continued his generosity Saturday as his mother fought for her life.

Haigler hosted a food drive for all frontline workers in Philadelphia — from the Streets Department and SEPTA, to the city’s many hospitals and emergency responders. The collection took place in the parking lot of the church he attends, the Voice of Praise Worldwide Ministries, on the 3500 block of Old York Road in the Logan section.

“The frontline workers sacrifice a lot to go to work every day, and I just wanted them to have one less thing to worry about,” Haigler said Saturday afternoon even as he bore his own worries.

Around 4 a.m., his mother, Jeanette, suffered a severe asthma attack. By the time the 53-year-old

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump will on Saturday hold his first public event since being diagnosed with COVID-19 more than a week ago, aiming to show he has beaten the virus and is ready to resume campaigning, although questions remain about his health.

White House: No “Public Health Value” in Revealing If Trump Still Has COVID-19 (Even If He Holds a Rally This Weekend)

October 9, 2020

| Health Current Events

As Donald Trump muses about holding a campaign rally in Florida on Saturday and Pennsylvania on Sunday night, a reasonable question for the White House to answer would be if the president has actually tested negative for COVID-19, given that it is transmitted through the air and campaign events of yore have been mask-free affairs with supporters packed in as tightly as possible. Furthermore, it would be helpful to reveal when the president last tested negative prior to his diagnosis last week, as it could inform people who interacted with him if they were exposed to the virus. But according to the administration, that’s private information that the public is not privy to!

Speaking to MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson on Friday, White House spokesman Brian Morgenstern spent an entire segment refusing to say when Trump last tested negative, despite Jackson asking him half a dozen times. “Why not be more transparent

Phrenic Nerve Stimulation Holds Up for Central Sleep Apnea

October 5, 2020

| Health

Five-year data supported the long-term safety and effectiveness of transvenous phrenic nerve stimulation (TPNS) for central sleep apnea (CSA), investigators said.

CSA severity decreased in patients after Remede device implantation and stayed that way out to 5 years, according to a group led by Maria Rosa Costanzo, MD, of Advocate Heart Institute in Chicago:

  • More than half of patients maintained improvement of apnea hypopnea index (AHI) at both 1 year and 5 years
  • Central apnea index remained under 1 event per hour at 1 year and 5 years alike versus a baseline of roughly 23 events per hour
  • Over half of patients achieved sustained improvement in arousals through 5 years
  • Arousals totaled 19 per hour at both 1 year and 5 years, down from a baseline of roughly 39 arousals per hour
  • Daytime sleepiness scores on the Epworth scale stayed at a median 6 points at 1 and 5 years,

Dollar holds tight ranges as investors await news on Trump’s health

TOKYO (Reuters) – The dollar clung to familiar ranges on Monday as financial markets awaited news on the health of U.S. President Donald Trump, who last week tested positive for the coronavirus, sending investors into safe-haven assets.

Risk-sensitive markets such as stocks rallied in early Asian trade after Trump made a surprise appearance outside his hospital with an impromptu motorcade.

But with Trump’s medical status still unclear, the dollar index remained little changed against a basket of six major currencies, last sitting at 93.738.

“With not a lot of major economic indicators released this week, the focus all comes down to Trump’s illness,” said Daisuke Uno, chief strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui Bank.

“There is a welter of information about the severity of his condition, and that

13-year-old holds exercise class to benefit kids’ mental health

October 2, 2020

| Health News

As 13-year-old Sadie Feingold prepared for her bat mitzvah project this year, she had one goal in mind: to stop the stigma.

The eighth-grader from Port Washington knew she wanted to focus on mental health for her community service project ahead of her bat mitzvah, or Jewish coming-of-age ceremony. She wanted to encourage kids and teens to talk about mental health struggles and help normalize it.

She said she was inspired to focus on this topic because of her own previous struggles with mental health.

“The whole point was to raise awareness to it and normalize it,” Sadie said.

So after doing some research with her mom about the connection between exercise and children’s mental health, they came up with a plan: She would host an exercise class at their synagogue for local teens and families, and raise money to support the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center in

Immune system holds clues to virus reaction

October 1, 2020

| Health Article

One of COVID-19’s scariest mysteries is why some people are mildly ill or have no symptoms and others rapidly die — and scientists are starting to unravel why.

An international team of researchers found that in some people with severe COVID-19, the body goes rogue and attacks one of its own key immune defenses instead of fighting the coronavirus. Most were men, helping to explain why the virus is hitting men harder than women.

And separate research suggests that children fare better than adults thanks to robust “first responder” immune cells that wane with age.

They’re the latest in a list of studies uncovering multiple features of the immune system’s intricate cascade that can tip the scales between a good or bad outcome. Next up: Figuring out if all these new clues might offer much-needed ways to intervene.

“We have the knowledge and capability of really boosting many aspects of
