The top executives of Hartford HealthCare and Connecticut Children’s on Monday signed an agreement broadening a 25-year partnership to combine pediatric services with the hospital system’s extensive network across Connecticut.

“This is a continuation and expansion and formalization of an existing relationship,” James Shmerling, president of Connecticut Children’s, said at an announcement outside Hartford Hospital.

Jeffrey Flaks, president of Hartford HealthCare, promised investments and modernization of services at neonatal intensive care units as Connecticut Children’s services are moved into Hartford HealthCare facilities.

“We’re going to work perfect the hand-off when children become adolescents and adolescents become adults for their health care,” he said.

Hartford HealthCare includes two tertiary-level teaching hospitals, an acute-care community teaching hospital, an acute-care hospital and trauma center, three community hospitals, a behavioral health network and a multispecialty physician group.

Mayors neighboring Hartford launch weekly distribution to address regional food insecurity

October 10, 2020

With food insecurity a persistent concern for families, mayors from three towns neighboring Hartford banded together to launch a weekly food distribution event this month, acknowledging the challenge knows no borders.

Friday marked the first of four such events, measures to bridge the gap for families struggling amid a deadly COVID-19 pandemic that has slowed the economy and left many jobless. By 10 a.m., scores of cars wound through cones in the sprawling Rehoboth Church of God parking lot.

With little pause, cars, SUVs and trucks swept through a gantry of volunteers, who quickly loaded a gallon of milk, a box of fresh produce, meat and dairy products into trunks. Within minutes, the line had quickly diminished as the volunteers stood awaiting new arrivals until the roughly 1,700 boxes of fresh food were gone.

“We find that if we can come together, pool our resources together, it benefits the community,”

Usually, when someone is having an anniversary, the custom is for them to receive gifts, not give them.

But St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport chose to celebrate the one-year anniversary of its acquisition by Hartford HealthCare — which took place Thursday — by giving $50,000 to the Bishop Jean Williams Food Pantry, also in Bridgeport.

The donation will help to reduce food insecurity, provide nutritious meals and further education about healthy eating, the organization said.

“We are so grateful and so thankful,” said Pastor Mary Green, of the Bishop Jean Williams Food Pantry, during a press conference Thursday to announce the donation.

The pantry provides emergency meals to low-to-moderate families that are food insecure. Families are able to shop on a weekly basis. The program is part of the Park City Initiative Corp., which helps families in need improve their quality of life.

During Thursday’s event, leaders from St.

In early July, Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin (left) and U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) leave the Samuel V. Arroyo Recreation Center in Hartford, Connecticut’s only CVS Health rapid COVID-19 testing site. The facility will operate through the end of December.

It’s the second extension of the free, walk-up, COVID-19 testing at the Samuel V. Arroyo Recreation Center in Pope Park, which CVS Health has been operating since June. The site, supported through a contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, was initially scheduled to run through July and then through September.
