10 Ways to Restore Gut Health

October 13, 2020

| Health Issues

Our gut plays a vital role in our overall health. While it’s easy to simply think of gut health in terms of how our stomach feels on a day-to-day basis—we specifically tend to notice digestive distress—it actually has an impact on other functions, too. While some of these are related to food, such as the regulation of energy from the food we eat, studies have found links between gut health and mental health as well. Our gut microbiome “modulates risk” of some diseases, as well, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, meaning your gut health can actually impact functions throughout your entire body.

If you are regularly experiencing gastrointestinal distress—symptoms such as heartburn, nausea and bloating, for example—there is a good chance your gut is trying to tell you to make some dietary changes. However, given what we know about the gut’s impact on other systems in

Expert Tips For Boosting Your Gut Health

Growing up, whenever I felt like my gut health was out of whack, I was told to grab a probiotic-rich yogurt out of the fridge — and that was the end of it. Now, I realize that probiotics are associated with gut health (more on that ahead), but there are also other ways to boost your digestive health that don’t involve eating the popular breakfast food.

From getting the right amount of shut-eye to working out, you can check out a few of them here.

Exercise Regularly

“Regular exercise stimulates the gut and increases intestinal activity, [which] can help with digestive problems such as constipation and bloating amongst others,” Dr. Shawn Khodadadian, MD, of Manhattan Gastroenterology, said.

Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, CDN, a Daily Harvest registered dietitian and nutritionist, also recommended her clients stay active throughout the day for optimum digestive health, among other health benefits. And while hitting that

Gut health benefits begin in utero

The gut’s microbiome — a complex, dense mixture of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes — plays an integral role in human health. A new Yale study reveals just how early the microbiome is formed and begins delivering this benefit.

For the first time, Yale scientists report that components of the gut microbiome begin to mature in utero, much earlier than previously known. They suspect that the bacterial byproducts they detected at this early stage are transferred from mother to baby via the placenta. Their findings appear in the Oct. 1 issue of the journal JCI Insight.

For years, Dr. Liza Konnikova, assistant professor of pediatrics and obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences, and her team have studied immune system development in the human gastrointestinal tract. In their earlier research, they found evidence of mature adaptive immune cells in fetuses in utero.

“It led us to ask: How are those immune

A lot of folksy medical advice has been disproven by modern science. We now know, for example, that you can’t contract a cold from cold, wet weather. And you don’t have to wait an hour after you eat before jumping in the pool. And it turns out that ulcers are not actually caused by stress or spicy food. However, modern science hasn’t disproved every piece of health advice your grandma ever gave you. Take the old maxim “you are what you eat.” As it turns out, that one is actually more true than we ever realized. Over the last couple of decades, scientific research has shown that the human gut microbiome plays a huge role in our health, and our diets can impact wellness on a cellular level. However, because no two microbiomes are exactly alike, the foods that are good (or bad) for one person may not be good

The title of Lindsay Maitland Hunt’s latest cookbook, which released this summer, says it all. Help Yourself: A Guide to Gut Health for People Who Love Delicious Food. It’s an ambitious, flavor-forward collection that covers everything from digestive system basics, to microbiota science, to leaky gut syndrome. And everyday recipes are what tie it all together. In the excerpt below, Lindsay breaks down her approach to eating good and feeling good. Also included: a couple recipes from the book that you’ll want to make ASAP.

If you grew up with the USDA food pyramid, it’s likely that these guidelines and my food pyramid will look a little different to you. Once you start eating with your microbes in mind, these are the things that are crucial. How you source ingredients matters, too, not just for your gut but for the health of the planet. These are by no means rules;

Why is the Gut Microbiome a Growing Focus for Wellness?

Consumer interest in the role of nutrition and overall health is expanding. 68% of people globally, now stating they believe there is a connection between their digestive health and overall good health. Research into digestive health is answering the call, too, with a myriad of studies that highlight the gut microbiome—the environment of “good” bacteria that works to keep us healthy—as the critical link between digestive health and immunity.

In particular, there is a high level of awareness of the role of probiotics. In 2019, Kerry, the makers of GanedenBC30®, surveyed over 11,000 health-conscious consumers in 14 countries. In just one example of the level of awareness, around eight in ten of the Americans perceived probiotics to provide digestive health benefits. This growing recognition has further sparked searches for research supported probiotic ingredients in everyday food and beverages.

Since the gut microbiome plays such

Climate warming is altering animals’ gut microbes, which are critical to their health and survival

September 28, 2020

| Community Health

It seems like each day scientists report more dire consequences of climate change on animals and plants worldwide. Birds that are migrating later in the year can’t find enough food. Plants are flowering before their insect pollinators hatch. Prey species have less stamina to escape predators. In short, climatic shifts that affect one organism are likely to trigger ripple effects that can disturb the structure and functioning of entire ecosystems.

One component of animal health that largely reflects the surrounding environment is the microbiome, the consortium of microbes now known to aid in food digestion, regulating the immune system and protecting against pathogens. The species of bacteria that make up the microbiome are primarily recruited from the environment. Thus, food webs and other animal interactions that influence environmental bacteria have the potential to shape animals’ microbiomes.

But what happens when climate change disturbs the environment, causing shifts in animals’ microbiomes
