AP FACT CHECK: Trump’s distortions on WHO and lockdowns | Govt-and-politics

October 13, 2020

| Health Facts

“We in the World Health Organization do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus,” Nabarro said. He added that lockdowns can only be justified “to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted. But by and large, we’d rather not do it.”

Since declaring the coronavirus a pandemic in March, WHO has said that if countries decide to go into lockdown, it should be considered temporary and they should use the time to implement measures like testing, tracing, informing local populations and promoting physical distancing.

Nowhere in his interview did Nabarro mention Trump. Nabarro has advocated a “middle path” in addressing the coronavirus, with measures in between lockdowns and allowing the virus to “run wild and build up herd immunity” and disappear — which Trump has promoted.

In the early months of the pandemic, Trump pushed for

As of Monday, at least 385 people had died from COVID-19 in West Virginia, with the state reporting more than 4,500 current active cases. State data said Cabell County, the site of several of Mountain Health hospitals, had among the highest total case counts with 1,020.

PRAGUE — The Czech Republic is imposing a new series of restrictive measures in response to a record surge in coronavirus infections.

Amid the spike, the number of deaths has surpassed 1,000 people.

Prime Minister Andrej Babis says all bars, restaurants and clubs will be closed starting on Wednesday, while drinking alcohol is banned at public places.

Babis also says all schools will be closed at least until Nov. 2, with the exception of schools remaining open for the children of doctors, nurses and rescue workers.

The government has also limited the number of people who can gather to six and made it mandatory

Trump’s doctor leans on health privacy law to duck questions | Govt-and-politics

Peters said “there may be multiple things going on here in that certain disclosures have been authorized and others haven’t.”

Speaking on MSNBC, Pelosi argued that a president has an obligation to be fully transparent about health care concerns. Selective disclosure is “not what the public is owed about the state of health of the president of the United States.”

The role of White House physician involves a unique balancing act, said Dr. Susan Bailey, president of the American Medical Association, calling it a “delicate dual obligation.”

A president’s doctors “bear responsibility not only to the president, but also to a public counting on neutral, objective information,” Bailey said in a statement.

“The patient-physician relationship is paramount in medicine, including the right to privacy and confidentiality that allows for open communication between the patient and physician, which all patients are entitled to,” she added. “At the same time, it is

Doctors say Trump’s blood oxygen level dropped suddenly | Govt-and-politics

Conley declined to say when Trump had last been tested before he was confirmed to have COVID-19 late Thursday. He initially suggested that Trump was 72 hours into the diagnosis — which would mean that he was confirmed infected Wednesday. Conley later clarified that Trump was administered an accurate test for the virus on Thursday afternoon.

The White House has said Trump was expected to stay at the hospital for “a few days” and would continue to work from its presidential suite, which is equipped to allow him to keep up his official duties.

On Saturday, Conley said Trump’s blood oxygen level was 96%, which is in the normal range. The two experimental drugs he has received, given through an IV, have shown some promise against COVID-19.

He noted that in many cases, COVID-19 can become more dangerous as the body responds. “The first week of COVID, and in particular

Cavalier White House approach to COVID catches up to Trump

President Donald Trump adjusts the microphone after he announced Judge Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee to the Supreme Court, in the Rose Garden at the White House, Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, in Washington.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments Monday after a summer break. Here are some of the issues either already on the court’s docket or likely to be before the justices soon:

A week after the presidential election, the court will hear arguments in a bid by the Trump administration and Republican-led states to overturn the Obama-era health care law. Coverage for more than 20 million people is at stake, along with the law’s ban on insurance discrimination against Americans with pre-existing medical conditions.

President Donald Trump, who has promised but never delivered a replacement for the Affordable Care Act, and Democratic rival Joe Biden sparred over the case in the

AP FACT CHECK: Trump falsehoods on Ohio economy, health care | Govt-and-politics

At present, Lordstown Motors has 159 employees, with plans for 500 by the end of 2020. It expects at least 1,500 by the end of 2021. Full-scale production of the Endurance is scheduled to start sometime in the second half of next year. The company wouldn’t say how much the workers will make.

Ohio is a key swing state that helped Trump win the presidency in 2016, but he’s vulnerable there because of promises made about revitalizing the economy. At a July 2017 rally in Youngstown, he told people that all the jobs that left Ohio are coming back. “Don’t sell your house,” he said.

The Lordstown area in northeastern Ohio is now trying to remake itself into a hub for electric vehicles, aided by GM’s plans to build a new $2.3 billion battery cell assembly plant that’s expected to employ about 1,100 workers. But those jobs won’t pay as

TRUMP, on the coronavirus: “We’re rounding the turn.” — interview aired Sunday on Fox News Channel.

TRUMP: “We’re rounding the corner — with or without a vaccine.” — interview on “Fox & Friends” on Sept. 21.

TRUMP, asked if the virus will “go away” if there isn’t a vaccine immediately available: “Sure, with time it goes away. And you’ll develop — you’ll develop herd-like, a herd mentality. It’s going to be — it’s going to be herd-developed, and that’s going to happen.” — ABC News town hall on Sept. 15.

THE FACTS: Trump appeared to promote a “herd immunity” approach to the virus if a vaccine isn’t immediately available that would require millions more people to get infected and significantly higher deaths.
