Look up a wealth of free health information on Jeff Library’s databases | Entertainment/Life

Patrons looking for health care information have a lot of resources at their fingertips thanks to the library’s partnership with EBSCO.

To access the database, go to the library’s homepage, and then find the tab in the bar at the top of the page titled “databases.” Click on the tab titled “EBSCOhost” in the right-hand column.

You’ll find several resources to find health care information.

Alt Healthwatch: This database focuses on holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. It offers articles from more than 180 international and often peer-reviewed journals and reports. In addition, there are hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research and book excerpts. It features indexing and abstracts going back as far as 1984, and full text going back as far as 1990.

CINAHL: This is a resource for nursing and allied health professionals, students, educators and researchers. It provides indexing for 2,928

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Offers Free Bluebikes Rides In Recognition of World Mental Health Day

BOSTON, Oct. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — To recognize World Mental Health Day and to support community health and wellness, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (“Blue Cross”) is sponsoring free rides on Bluebikes, Metro Boston’s public bike share system, on Saturday, October 10. Riders can take Bluebikes for a spin, free of charge, from any of the more than 350 Bluebikes stations across the system’s eight municipalities: Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Everett, Newton, Somerville and Watertown, with stations in Chelsea and Revere launching soon. LORAIN, Ohio — A group of community partners have joined together to provide a great service for Lorain City Schools.

Lorain County Public Health, Mercy Health of Lorain and a university medical research partner have partnered together to provide free COVID-19 testing for Lorain City Schools staff and students, Superintendent Dr. Jeff Graham announced.

“COVID-19 testing in Lorain is critical to help our schools not only to assure we react very quickly to any positive case and to assess our mitigation strategies, but also to get a picture of school/community spread to inform us on future decisions,” Graham wrote in the official announcement email. “We believe that an expanded, localized testing initiative through this collaboration will give us a truer picture of the risk for contracting and spreading the coronavirus right here in Lorain.”

(CNN) — What feels like a lifetime ago in the days before Covid-19, hotels lured travelers with amenities such as complimentary breakfasts, cocktail hours and yoga classes at the spa.

The world has changed quite a bit since then. Though people are beginning to tiptoe out from their Airbnbs and homes — away from stockpiled toilet paper, sourdough starter and new puppies — and even hop on planes, the travel industry recognizes the need to pivot.

Most properties are pledging best practices according to CDC and EPA guidelines such as frequent cleaning, air-filtration systems, contactless check-in and decreased capacity. Others are taking the opportunity to innovate, brainstorming new ways to make guests feel secure and relaxed, which range from luxe to odd.

Prevea Health offers free COVID-19 tests in Kewaunee, Marinette

GREEN BAY – Prevea Health Centers in Kewaunee and Marinette are now offering free COVID-19 testing and asking those who might need a test to register in advance.

The test is available to anyone experiencing any of the following symptoms of the COVID-19 virus: Cough; fever; chills; repeated shaking with chills; muscle pain; shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; headache; sore throat; new loss of taste or smell.

According to a press release from Prevea, the addition of the Kewaunee and Marinette clinics increases the number of test sites the organization offers across Wisconsin to 16.

Davenport University expands free counseling services for students as mental health needs rise

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — In response to the growing need for mental health services for students, Davenport University recently announced it has expanded its offerings with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services on all campuses.

“In response to student needs, we’re launching a new partnership with Pine Rest to offer all Davenport University students – regardless of their home campus – one-on-one confidential counseling services free of charge,” President Richard Pappas said in an Oct. 1 press release.

The increased mental health offerings with Pine Rest include free, confidential counseling to students – including same-day support. This new service is at no additional cost to students, as it is built into the cost of tuition.

Pine Rest is offering fall semester counseling exclusively through teletherapy. The university expects to continue onsite appointments at their W.A. Lettinga Campus in January or once social distancing requirements are lifted.

Free COVID testing given to Latinx community in Portland

Oregon nonprofits and Legacy Health are taking on the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Latinx people.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Several community organizations and Legacy Health are working to provide free COVID-19 testing to at-risk populations within the Latinx community.

On Thursday, nonprofit Latino Network’s parking lot transformed into a drive-up testing site. A similar testing event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3.

“Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve seen a disproportionate impact on the Latinx community,” said Veronica Leonard, director of youth, education and wellness at Latino Network.

This week, the COVID-19 tracker for Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, and Yamhill counties showed Hispanic and Latinx people made up 36% of regional cases, but only 11% of the population. White people made up 38% of cases and 72% of the population.

Leonard said these numbers are partially due to many Latinx people working frontline jobs that cannot be done remotely.

Free Mammogram Van Coming To Washington Heights

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, a nonprofit organization will provide free mammograms in Washington Heights.

Project Renewal, a homeless service provider, will take its ScanVan to Washington Heights on Monday to offer free mammograms to low-income residents.

The ScanVan will be part of a larger event at the Community Healthcare Network at 511 West 157th Street. Anybody that wants to will be able to get a mammogram from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The ScanVan is no normal van.

It’s a 40-foot-long state-of-the-art vehicle, with a full clinic, which generally travels to more than 200 locations throughout the five boroughs each year. However, it shut down during the peak of coronavirus in New York City, and returned to the road in July.

The emphasis on mammograms has added weight in 2020, as there has been a 94 percent decrease in breast-cancer screenings
