Under Pence, Politics Regularly Seeped Into the Coronavirus Task Force

October 8, 2020

| Health News

WASHINGTON — Aboard Air Force Two en route to the Mayo Clinic on April 28, White House aides walked down the aisle distributing masks to members of Vice President Mike Pence’s entourage, a requirement for everyone entering the renowned hospital in Minnesota as the coronavirus spread.

But Marc Short, the vice president’s powerful chief of staff, said Mr. Pence, the leader of the White House’s coronavirus task force, would not be wearing one. Dr. Stephen M. Hahn, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, tried to intervene, saying it would be a bad message to the public if the vice president were to flout hospital rules.

But according to a person who witnessed the discussion and a senior administration official familiar with the episode, Mr. Short responded that photographs of Mr. Pence in a mask could be used by Democrats as campaign ammunition against President Trump, who had consistently

Errors force some unemployed in Colorado to repay benefits

October 7, 2020

| Health Benefits

DENVER (AP) — Some Colorado residents are being asked to repay some of the unemployment benefits they received from the state due to errors in their applications, Colorado Public Radio reported.

State officials say that human error is to blame, along with the rush required to implement the new system amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The mix-up has affected gig workers especially hard, the radio station reported. Adam Christopher Brill, 39, has seen his benefits drop to about $111 per week, and the state has told him he owes roughly $6,000 to fix an overpayment.

“I felt like they rushed the system to get out,” Brill said. “They were under a lot of pressure. It’s now coming back to us as gig workers and self employed people.”

His error was a typo. When he was applying for benefits, Brill used the wrong figure from his tax forms which inadvertently led

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday a “Health of the Force” initiative to assist in both the physical and mental well-being of its deputies.

Here’s the full news release announcing the program, from Sgt. Jayson Janes:

In 2019, 228 law enforcement officers in the United States took their own lives.  The profession of law enforcement is, per the metrics, one of the most potentially dangerous and traumatizing careers in the country. https://www.officer.com/command-hq/supplies-services/public-awareness/news/21119956/report-228-us-law-enforcement-officers-died-by-suicide-in-2019

“The law enforcement profession is stressful on our deputy sheriffs, and their families. I work with great teammates. We want to do all we can to improve and take care of them and their families in order to ensure successful careers in providing excellent public safety and customer service.  This enhanced Health of the Force program will provide additional tools and resources for deputies to care for their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.”

Air Force Col. Merlyn Dethlefsen > U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE > Story

October 5, 2020

| Dept Of Health

Most fighter-bomber missions meant to knock out enemy defense systems during the Vietnam War only involved one fly-by — the pilots knew there were few chances of escaping enemy aircraft if you executed more than one pass. Air Force Col. Merlyn Dethlefsen knew that when he took charge of a daring raid over a North Vietnamese steel plant in 1967, but he ignored the status quo to make sure the mission was a success. For that, he earned the Medal of Honor.

Dethlefsen was born in Greenville, Iowa, on June 29, 1934. As the son of a farmer and a schoolteacher, he did well at academics, graduating with honors from high school in 1951 when he was just 16.

Dethlefsen went to Iowa State University for about two years before deciding to join the Air Force in 1953. He started aviation cadet training the following year and was commissioned as

Monica Lewinsky says that a mental health czar should be appointed to the White House’s coronavirus task force to help Americans get through the pandemic.

“There’s an authority figure and voice that has been missing from the COVID-19 conversation since day one: a mental health commissioner or czar. In other words, a mental health version of [National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director] Anthony FauciAnthony FauciFauci calls for racial and ethnic diversity in coronavirus vaccine trials Fauci says his mask stance was ‘taken out of context’ by Trump Ocasio-Cortez, Warren pull out of New Yorker Festival amid labor dispute MORE,” Lewinsky writes in an essay for Vanity Fair published Thursday.

Bears raid food pantry set up by Westhampton church; force it to relocate

September 29, 2020

| Health Food

A Westhampton church is seeking a new location for the food pantry it set up in March to help people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, after bears recently raided the distribution site in the center of town, according to the church’s website.

A message posted to the homepage of the Westhampton Congregational United Church of Christ sheds light on the pantry’s recent setback.

“Well our Food pantry in the center of town has been operating well since early March……but alas, this week the bears decided that they had more need of the food bank than we did, so we’ve had to temporarily disband services,” the message says.

The church says it’s hoping “to quickly open inside another public building in the center of town but no details yet.” Anyone who needs food in the meantime can call the church at 413-527-4204, according to the statement.

The church directs callers to
