| Health Center

CAROLINE COUNTY, VA — The Rappahannock Area Health District is planning a “public health emergency” exercise on Wednesday when it will be offering free flu shots from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Wright’s Chapel UMC in Ruther Glen. All safety precautions will be observed during the drive-thru event, the health district said.

At the event, the health district will offer free quadrivalent flu vaccines, which cover four types of flu, to residents ages 9 and up. Vaccine supplies are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until the end time of the event, or until the supply of flu vaccine runs out. The public should wear a mask and a short-sleeved shirt or sleeves that roll up for easy access to the upper arm.

The purpose of event is to simulate mass vaccination events in which the health department and local agencies would work together so

Fact check: The British government is not combining data on COVID-19 and the flu; it is publishing the separate data together in one report

A screenshot of an official coronavirus report has been used to wrongly suggest that data on COVID-19 and influenza are now being combined in England.

Reuters Fact Check. REUTERS

The photo, uploaded to numerous accounts in mid-October, is seen in these posts here, here, here, here, here, here, here), and has been taken from a weekly COVID-19 surveillance report published on the Public Health England (PHE) website on Oct. 2 (here).

In this particular report, one line reads: “This will be the last COVID-19 surveillance report, as of 8 October 2020, the information in this report will be published in a combined Weekly flu and COVID-19 Surveillance Report on GOV.UK.”

This line has since been used to illustrate the Facebook users’ claims that PHE has decided to combine COVID-19 and influenza figures, with one person specifically asserting – falsely – that this would “create one statistic”.

PARIS — France launched a flu vaccine campaign Tuesday in an effort to avoid facing another epidemic peak as the coronavirus is spreading rapidly in the country.

French health authorities have issued official recommendations to prevent potential shortages of flu vaccine, which they fear might happen amid increased demand because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Medical staff are advised to initially reserve it for priority patients, including people over 65, pregnant women and those suffering from respiratory illness and some other diseases. Others are advised to wait for December.

The campaign was launched as French health authorities report a rapid increase in cases of coronavirus infections, with more and more people admitted in hospitals.

Will a flu shot protect you from coronavirus?

October 13, 2020
| Health News

Health experts are urging people to get their flu shot this year as the number of coronavirus cases in the U.S. are once again on the rise.

But could getting a flu shot also protect you from COVID-19? No, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

“While it would be nice, there’s no evidence that flu shots can protect you from COVID-19, an entirely different disease,” ADPH said in a Facebook post.

That doesn’t mean you should skip the flu vaccine, however.

“The flu shot can help protect you from having the flu, which results is hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations a year and thousands of deaths. Plus, with the continued spread of COVID-19, experts warn that without proper precautions, we could experience a “twindemic” of both flu and COVID-19,” ADPH added.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends people get vaccinated before flu season starts and begins to spread

The Shawnee County Health Department is providing free flu shots specifically for uninsured people aged at least 19 years old.

The event is Wednesday from 4-6:30 p.m. at Hummer Sports Park, 2751 SW East Circle Dr. S #1. Linda Ochs, director of the health department, said anyone interested in attending should head toward the parking lot by the stadium for a flu shot.

No appointment is necessary and participants do not need to bring anything with them. Ochs said there are both drive through and walk up options, so anyone taking the bus can get a shot.

She said participants can fill out paperwork online at the Shawnee County Health Department’s immunizations web page before arriving, but that paperwork will also be available at the event.

“You don’t want to have the flu and COVID

Coronavirus may live much longer than the flu virus on smartphone screens

October 12, 2020
| Health Article

The virus that causes COVID-19 can stay active on smooth surfaces like smartphones, metal surfaces and paper money for much longer than the flu virus, according to researchers from Australia’s national science agency. They found that it can remain viable for up to 28 days, albeit in a very controlled environment. Under the same conditions, the influenza virus remains infectious for just 17 days, according to the study.

The team said the research proves that the coronavirus is “extremely robust” compared to other viruses. “These findings demonstrate SARS-CoV-2 can remain infectious for significantly longer time periods than generally considered possible,” the study concludes. (Cloth and other porous surfaces can carry infectious virus for just half the time, or around 14 days.)

While it shows the importance of cleaning and disinfecting phones and other surfaces, the study comes with some large caveats. It was conducted at a constant 68 degree F

Vaccine Clinic 10.7

Barb Martinez, a public health nurse at the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, vaccinates Spencer Harper, 12, at Lefler Middle School on Wednesday.

Vaccine Clinic 10.7

Health Department officials said there hadn’t been any flu cases reported in Lancaster County as of Friday, but it is best to get a flu shot before Halloween.

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department in recent weeks has stressed the added importance of getting a flu shot this year amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Much like the coronavirus, influenza’s symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue. That likely will make it difficult to tell whether a person has COVID-19 or the flu without a test, and an active flu season would put even more strain on Lincoln’s already busy health

SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) –  SSM Health gave out more than 500 free flu shots in less than two hours during its community drive-thru event Saturday morning.

Staff said cars began lining up outside the Ronald McDonald parking lot on Park Ave. as early as 5:45 a.m. At one point, cars were lined up on Park Ave., onto Grand Blvd., and stretched all the way to I-44.

Saturday’s clinic is one of five community drive-thru events SSM Health is offering for free flu shots.

While health experts always encourage people to get vaccinated ahead of flu-season, they say this year it is especially important.

“We don’t want to overwhelm our healthcare system,” said Kelly Reidel of SSM Health. “If we can prevent some of these illnesses with the flu vaccine then we can prevent some of those hospitalizations and people needing treatment as well.”

Health experts encourage flu shots to avoid a ‘Twindemic’

Twindemic: the possibility of dealing with the influenza epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic at the same time.

ST. LOUIS — As coronavirus cases continue to climb, health officials are urging everyone to get vaccinated for the flu.

“You might’ve heard those talking on TV about the ‘twindemic’, we’re trying to help prevent the flu with the flu shot,” said Pharmacy Manager Kristen Helton.

Twindemic: the possibility of dealing with the influenza epidemic
and COVID-19 pandemic at the same time.

“Nobody knows what could quite happen if you get the flu and you get the coronavirus. we can speculate and assume that it will be quite bad,” said Dr. Ken Heller.

To prevent that, health experts are highly recommending flu shots, with hospitals like Barnes Jewish Medical Center offering free flu shots to people who register.

“It’s pretty busy today. We’re anticipating giving about 2,000 shots today,” said Helton. “We had to
