Florida schools reopened en mass. Feared COVID surge hasn’t followed.

Many teachers and families feared a spike in COVID-19 cases when Florida made the controversial push to reopen schools in August with in-person instruction.

But a USA TODAY analysis shows the state’s positive case count among kids aged 5 to 17 declined through late September after a peak in July. Among the counties seeing surges in overall cases, it’s college-age adults – not school children – driving the trend, the analysis found.

The early results in Florida show the success of rigorous mask-wearing, social distancing, isolating contacts, and quick contact tracing when necessary, said health experts.

“Many of the schools that have been able to successfully open have also been implementing control measures that are an important part of managing spread in these schools,” said Dr. Nathaniel Beers, who serves on the American Academy

COVID Florida cases deaths brevard county

Brevard County reported two newly recorded coronavirus deaths Saturday, one of which was connected to a long-term care facility such as a nursing home or assisted-living facility, data from the Florida Department of Health show.

So far, the county has lost 293 people to the virus, with 83 deaths were reported this month.

At least 178 deaths were connected to long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, up one from the previous day.

Brevard also added 72 new COVID-19 cases to its total of 8,800 — 8,773 residents and 27 nonresidents affected.

Florida surpasses 700K cases after health officials report 1,882 new cases of COVID-19

ORLANDO, Fla. – The state of Florida surpassed a grim milestone Sunday after new cases pushed the state over the 700,00 case mark.

The Florida Department of Health announced 1,882 new cases of the coronavirus in the state as of Sunday. The new cases of the respiratory illness bring the state’s total to 700,564 since the pandemic was first detected in Florida in March.

On Sunday 10 new deaths were reported by the Florida Department of Health. Florida’s COVID-19 death toll now stands at 14,200 deaths, including 168 non-residents who have died in the state.

Of the 10 deaths reported in the state, six new deaths were reported in Central Florida.

Data from COVID-19 related deaths is often delayed and new deaths can take up to two weeks to report, according to health officials.

As Florida restaurants and bars enjoyed their first full day of operation without Covid-19 restrictions in months, the mayor of Miami warned that the governor’s decision to fully reopen such establishments and to limit local governments’ ability to enforce their own restrictions could have devastating consequences.
