Germany hits 5,000 new cases, Merkel eyes action

| Health Article

BERLIN — The number of newly reported coronavirus cases in Germany has passed 5,000 for the first time since mid-April.

The country’s disease control agency, the Robert Koch Institute, said Wednesday that a further 5,132 infections and 43 deaths from COVID-19 were recorded over the past day.

Chancellor Angela Merkel is meeting the governors of Germany’s 16 states Wednesday to discuss which measures to take in response to the growing case load.

Officials are particularly concerned that COVID-19 infections might increase among older people, who are more likely to suffer serious illnesses.

So far, some 620 people in Germany are receiving intensive care treatment for COVID-19.

Since the start of the pandemic, Germany has recorded a total of 334,585 coronavirus infections, of which almost 282,000 are considered to have recovered. There have been 9,677 deaths in the country from COVID-19.

Pelosi eyes creation of panel to determine a president’s fitness to serve

October 10, 2020

| Fitness

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jamie Raskin unveiled a bill Friday that would create a standing committee to evaluate the mental or physical capacity of any sitting president.

They said the legislation was not intended to remove the current president from office before the election, but to set out a process stemming from the 25th Amendment.

“This is not about President Trump. He will face the judgment of the voters,” Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, said. “He shows the need for us to create a process for future presidents.”

“This isn’t about any judgment that anybody has about someone’s behavior. This is about a diagnosis,” she added.

The 25th Amendment provides for the transfer of presidential power in the case of removal from office, death, or disability. Congress, the president’s cabinet, and the vice president have the power to remove a president unable to serve, but it would take a

1. Most people can see a million colors

Scientists estimate that the average person can see at least a million colors thanks to the eye’s cone cells, which send signals to the brain that allow us to perceive different hues. If that sounds impressive, consider that people with a rare condition called tetrachromacy have an extra type of cone cell and can see as many as 100 million colors as a result!

2. You spend 10 percent of your waking hours blinking

Blinking keeps your eyes lubricated and protects them from dust and debris, which may help explain why we do so much of it: The average person blinks between 15 and 20 times per minute, or 14,400 to 19,200 times a day — that’s about 10 percent of your waking life, or upwards of 5 million times in a year.

3. The quick-healing cornea has no blood

New Coronavirus Can Infect Your Eyes as Well as Your Lungs | Health News

By Amy Norton
HealthDay Reporter

(HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Oct. 9, 2020 (HealthDay News) — COVID-19 is primarily a respiratory infection, but experts have suspected the virus can also infiltrate the eyes. Now, scientists have more direct evidence of it.

The findings are based on a patient in China who developed an acute glaucoma attack soon after recovering from COVID-19. Her doctors had to perform surgery to treat the condition, and tests of her eye tissue showed evidence of SARS-CoV-2.

The case offers proof that “SARS-CoV-2 can also infect ocular tissues in addition to the respiratory system,” the doctors reported in the Oct. 8 online edition of the journal JAMA Ophthalmology.

“It’s been suspected that the eyes can be a source of both ‘in’ and ‘out'” for the novel coronavirus, said Dr. Aaron Glatt, a spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

That’s why health care workers protect their eyes

Pelosi eyes 25th Amendment panel to assess presidential capacity

October 9, 2020

| Health And Fitness

Pelosi plans to introduce legislation to create a commission as outlined under the 25th Amendment to assess the president’s capacity to hold office.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, along with Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., a constitutional law professor, rolled out legislation that would create a commission to assess a president’s capacity to serve as outlined under the 25th Amendment.

The 25th Amendment was passed by Congress and ratified in 1967 as way to ensure a continuity of power in the aftermath of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

It says the vice president and a majority of principal officers of the executive departments “or of such other body as Congress” may by law provide a declaration to Congress that the president “is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” At that point, the vice president would immediately assume the powers of acting president.

On Friday, Pelosi said the proposed

By Jeff Mason, Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Thursday he may return to the campaign trail with a rally on Saturday after the White House physician said he had completed his course of therapy for the novel coronavirus and could resume public events.

In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump said he was likely to take a test for the coronavirus on Friday after testing positive for it a week ago. The White House has declined to say when the president last tested negative for COVID-19.

The president, who sounded hoarse, said he was looking at further campaign events in the coming days, including a rally in Florida on Saturday and in Pennsylvania on Sunday.

“Really good,” Trump said when asked in the evening interview how he was feeling. “I think I’m going to try doing a rally on Saturday night …

The eyes don’t have it: Masks upset classroom communication

September 27, 2020

| Health

Placing an order at a deli counter while wearing a mask and standing 6 feet away can be difficult. Try teaching a class full of schoolchildren and connecting with students who are themselves wearing masks.

Teachers who in ordinary times rely on their voices to convey nuances of language and manage classroom behavior are tasked with not sounding like the trombone-produced “wah wah” of the Charlie Brown TV specials while protecting themselves and their students from the coronavirus.

To help themselves communicate with students, teachers have turned to masks with clear patches over their mouths, set up plexiglass bubbles inside classrooms so they can speak without masks, and in some cases turned to props to get across how they are feeling.

Stephanie Wanzer, a teacher who works with special education students in Fairfield County, Connecticut, uses a stick with an image of a smile during her sessions.

Germany eyes global health ambitions as U.S. steps back

September 27, 2020

Although the U.S. is an important partner to the WHO, it can be replaced, said David Heymann, an epidemiologist who headed the WHO’s response to SARS in 2003. “Germany has become a very important partner in global health recently and other countries are stepping up as well,” he said shortly after Trump’s announcement.

It’s not just cash that Germany is funneling into global health. It’s also determined to be the voice of reason in shaking up the WHO post-pandemic. A case in point: While Germany and France abandoned talks over an American proposal for reforms at the WHO, they penned their own plan to strengthen the organization.

Pitching for ‘more WHO’

The two nations recently made the pitch for a beefed-up WHO in a blueprint, reported by Reuters last week, that would give the global body more legal powers while boosting mandatory payments from member countries.

Spahn, who has continued
