The District has extended its public health emergency to the end of the year, and is urging people who attended recent White House events to get tested for COVID-19.

The D.C. Health Department, with nine other local agencies, released Thursday an open letter calling on people who attended the Supreme Court announcement in the Rose Garden in late September or have worked in the White House over the past two weeks to take coronavirus precautions.

“Given the growing numbers of positive COVID cases reported from staff working in and near the White House, people who attended the event hosted by the White House on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, and our preliminary understanding that there has been limited contact tracing performed to date, there may be other staff and residents at risk for exposure to COVID positive individuals,” the letter says, recommending individuals get tested and contact their local health departments

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden extended his well wishes to President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump after they tested positive for the coronavirus and will reportedly get tested himself after sharing a debate stage with the president on Tuesday.

“Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery,” Biden tweeted Friday morning. “We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family.”

Biden and Trump debated in person for the first time on Tuesday night in Cleveland, though the two didn’t shake hands and were standing far apart. Neither candidate wore a mask during the 90-minute debate.

The Latest: US extends ban on cruise ships through October

October 1, 2020
| Health Article

WASHINGTON — Federal health officials are extending the U.S. ban on cruise ships through the end of October amid reports of recent outbreaks of the new coronavirus on ships overseas.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday that it was extending a no-sail order on cruise ships with the capacity to carry at least 250 passengers.

The CDC said surveillance data from March 1 through Sept. 29 shows at least 3,689 COVID-19 or COVID-like illnesses on cruise ships in U.S. waters, in addition to at least 41 reported deaths. It said these numbers are likely an underestimate.

It cited recent outbreaks as evidence that cruise ship travel continues to transmit and amplify the spread of the novel coronavirus, even when ships sail at reduced passenger capacities. It said it would likely spread the infection in the U.S. communities if operations were to resume prematurely.

“Recent passenger voyages in

In a new executive order signed Wednesday, Kemp extended all current COVID-19 restrictions until 11:59 p.m. on October 15.

The public health state of emergency is extended until November 9.

There are two minor changes made in his latest order, which include allowing workers at restaurants and bars to return to work once they have been symptom-free for 24 following a confirmed positive or suspected COVID-19 case.

ACT/SAT test score deadlines have also been extended for HOPE and Zell scholarship eligibility.

Kemp first declared a public health state of emergency on March 14, and it has been continuously extended since then.

In March, he said the point of the emergency declaration was to “allow the

Federal funding for the National Guard’s nationwide COVID-19  response missions has been extended into December. While there are Ohio National Guard units transitioning out of the food bank mission in order to return to civilian and military obligations, new units are being brought in to continue providing assistance at all 14 locations throughout the state.
