Tens of thousands of people have signed up to a campaign by a group called 1 Day Sooner to take an experimental vaccine candidate and then face coronavirus in a controlled setting.

Among them is Estefania Hidalgo, 32, a photography student in Bristol, England, who works at a gas station to pay the bills.

“I do night shifts there, and it can be very lonely,” she recalled on a sunny day near her home. Passing those long lockdown hours with just podcasts to keep her company, she describes discovering the challenge trial movement — and hearing volunteers’ motivations — as a revelatory moment.

“I was shaken,” she said. “No one should be left

Utah OKs shorter quarantine for students exposed to the virus at school

October 9, 2020

| Dept Of Health

Students and teachers who get exposed to the coronavirus at school may now only have to quarantine for seven days, according to new guidelines from the Utah Department of Health.

Under the updated policy, individuals can return to the classroom early — rather than waiting the full 14 days — as long as they meet three criteria:

• They were tested for the virus a week after exposure and their results came back negative.

• They and the positive person who exposed them were both wearing masks at the time of contact. (School administrators are responsible for determining this.)

• And they do not have symptoms. If any develop, “they should isolate at home and call their health care provider.”

The changes were quietly approved by health officials and sent out in an email by state Superintendent Sydnee Dickson to district and charter administrators Thursday, without any public announcement. A

| Dept Of Health

BEDMINSTER, N.J. (CBS) — The White House has given the New Jersey Department of Health a list of at least 206 individuals who may have been exposed to COVID-19 at President Trump’s event last Thursday in Bedminster. New Jersey health officials say they’ve reached out to all the individuals who were possibly exposed to COVID-19, recommending they self-monitor for symptoms or quarantine if they were in close contact with the President and his staff.

“The White House supplied to NJ officials the names of at least 206 individuals who attended the events,” health officials tweeted. “DOH has reached out to these individuals to make them aware of possible exposure and recommend that they self-monitor for symptoms and quarantine if they were in close contact with the President and his staff.”

President Donald Trump interacted with “dozens” of people after flying to a fundraiser in New Jersey on Thursday even though the White House was already aware that top aide Hope Hicks had tested positive for the coronavirus, according to multiple reports.

Trump announced overnight that he and first lady Melania Trump had tested positive for the coronavirus and would isolate as they recover. The news prompted concerns among White House aides, some of whom privately told The New York Times that Trump “has comorbidities that could make him more susceptible to a severe bout of the virus.”

Trump’s announcement came after Bloomberg News reported that Hicks, one of his closest advisers, had tested positive. Two

Without masks and a vaccine, we could reach Herd Immunity from COVID-19, but deaths would skyrocket. We break down the science of it.

USA TODAY

The Sioux Falls school board unanimously voted to change the rules for how students and staff should quarantine after exposure to COVID-19.

Previously, those who were identified as close contacts to a person who tested positive for the virus were required to quarantine for 14 days. Now, in some instances, including when all parties involved were wearing masks, students will be allowed to return to the classroom sooner.

The policy changes go into effect Thursday, Superintendent Jane Stavem said. Those currently in quarantine will start receiving notices about how to proceed next, she said.

The new rules include:

  • In a setting where everyone is wearing face coverings, any asymptomatic student or staff member who had close contact may return and monitor for symptoms in

CLOSE

WAUSAU – Kids who attended and participated in basketball games Sept. 18 at Tenth Street Park, 935 Jackson St., are being asked to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 after a participant tested positive.

“Many local youth” were present for about six hours and many participated in basketball games, the Marathon County Health Department said Saturday night in a news release. Prevention measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 were not used, the health department said.

“This type of gathering — including many people, over a long period of time, not using prevention measures — is contributing to the dramatic increases in cases being seen in our area,” said Judy Burrows, public information officer for the health department. “This is the kind of activity that contributes to community spread.”

Anyone who exhibits symptoms of COVID-19 should get tested. Those symptoms include fever, cough, loss of taste or smell, shortness of
