Law360 (October 7, 2020, 7:39 PM EDT) — A nonprofit health system in South Georgia is accusing the state’s community health commissioner of ignoring problems with a Brunswick, Georgia, surgery center’s expansion that it says unfairly impacts the health system.

Southeast Georgia Health System Inc. sued the Georgia Department of Community Health and its commissioner Frank W. Berry in an Atlanta state court on Tuesday along with rival medical services provider Arc of Georgia LLC, doing business as Premier Surgery Center.

Both Southeast Georgia Health System and Premier Surgery Center offer outpatient surgery services within a mile of each other in Brunswick, according to the complaint.

Apple just expanded the reach of its iPhone health records feature

October 7, 2020

| Health Facts

Apple’s Heath Records feature, which allows iPhone users to download their medical records to their smartphone, is now available in the UK and is being used by two hospital trusts.

The feature, part of Apple’s Health app, gives iPhone users the ability to request and download their electronic health records as stored by hospitals using a direct, encrypted connection between their iPhone and the system used by the clinic. The Health app then periodically connects to pull across any new health records and notify the user when new records are available.

Currently in the US over 500 institutions support the Health Records feature on the iPhone across 11,000 locations.

In many cases, patients’ medical records are held in multiple locations, requiring patients to log in to each healthcare provider’s website to piece together their health information manually.

Expanded Medicaid begins in Nebraska after years of dispute

October 1, 2020

| Health News

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will officially offer expanded Medicaid coverage to low-income people starting Thursday after years of wrangling over it in the Legislature, a statewide ballot campaign that led voters to approve it and a nearly two-year rollout that left some people in health care limbo.

The state will provide coverage to 10,288 residents who have signed up so far, a number roughly in line with the state’s projections. State officials expect expanded enrollment to rise to about 90,000 within a few years.

“This expansion is an excellent opportunity” for people who are now eligible, said Dannette Smith, executive director of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Nebraska was among several conservative states where state lawmakers and governors declined to expand Medicaid, only to see the issue go to voters. Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts and his GOP predecessor, Dave Heineman, both argued that expansion would be

High costs for hospital care and prescription drugs are causing more employers to be open to government regulation. (Associated Press)
High costs for hospital care and prescription drugs are causing more employers to be open to government regulation. (Associated Press)

U.S. employers, battered by rising hospital and pharmaceutical prices, are increasingly open to a bigger government role in healthcare, including regulating prices and expanding Medicare to more working Americans.

In one recent survey, more than three-quarters of responding employers said government regulation of drug prices and hospital rates would be “very helpful” or “somewhat helpful.”

About half said a “Medicare public option” — usually understood to mean expanding eligibility for the large government health plan to younger Americans — would be helpful, according to the survey by the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions, which represents employers that provide health benefits to their workers. That’s up from about 4 in 10 employers who responded to last year’s survey.

“A lot of employers feel the private market in healthcare isn’t serving
