Your access to walkable spaces, the fresh food options you have and ultimately your life expectancy will largely be determined by where you live, but to understand why and to improve people’s lives, you have to go beyond geography.

That’s the message that Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, the dean of Atlanta’s Morehouse School of Medicine and a Harvard University-trained physician, conveyed to faculty, staff and students at UC Davis Health in a Facebook forum marking October as Global Diversity Month.

“We’ve figured out that just going into a community and telling people what they should be doing is not enough to expect that people are going to respond and change their lifestyle,” Montgomery Rice said. “We needed policies that would lead to sustainability, particularly in those areas where we had the lowest life expectancy and that were influenced by psychological barriers.”

The International Vaccine Institute (IVI) hosted a virtual State Forum today to advocate for multilateral cooperation through vaccine diplomacy. During a coronavirus pandemic with the continuous threat of more neglected infectious diseases spreading around the world, the forum convened a panel of country ambassadors and vaccine experts to promote partnership and equity in global health.

“Our coming together today is visible evidence of the kind of solidarity that will end this pandemic, prevent the next one, and control and eradicate more neglected diseases that disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries,” said George Bickerstaff, Chair of IVI’s Board of Trustees, in his welcome.

The forum was livestreamed online from IVI headquarters in , Korea and featured remarks from First Lady Kim Jung-sook of the Republic of Korea and Queen Sylvia of Sweden, as well as ambassadors from the Republic of Korea, Sweden, India,

California’s health equity measure aims to protect communities vulnerable to the coronavirus. But will small businesses pay the price?

| Community Health

For public health leaders and community advocates across the Bay Area, California’s new health equity metric, which aims to tackle coronavirus disparities in communities of color, is a forward-thinking plan that will aid those hardest hit by the virus.

But for business owners like Danielle Rabkin, the metric is a potential new roadblock in a year full of them. Rabkin’s business is on the brink of closure. After months of uncertainty and evaporating revenue, she was allowed to reopen her San Francisco gym, CrossFit Golden Gate in September, at limited indoor capacity.

A few weeks later, the state came out with the new health equity metric rule, adding another layer in determining when counties may advance reopening and roll back shelter-in-place restrictions, according to the state’s color-coded, tiered system for assessment.

San Francisco County didn’t meet the equity metric required for advancement to a less-restrictive tier last week, the state’s

How the US Department of Education can protect students and promote equity in higher education

Higher education was at a crossroads even before the COVID-19 crisis. In recent years, the cost of college attendance has risen and student debt levels have exploded. Discussions about debt forgiveness and reconfiguring higher education finance have moved out of wonky policy circles and into public discourse. Meanwhile, the costs of college have risen dramatically in recent years, perhaps exacerbated by decreases in state funding, and leading many institutions of higher education (“IHEs”) to provide online and lower-cost solutions to supplement or replace the “traditional” four-year, residential college—a trend that will be accelerated by the COVID-19 crisis. Simultaneously, college demographics have shifted, with an increasing population of “nontraditional” students, including those who are older, lack financial support from parents or other family members, and are more likely to have dependents. Disparities in higher education have had disproportionate, negative, and long-lasting effects on Black and Latino communities. And COVID-19 continues has

Arlington County announces community dialogues on racial equity

October 12, 2020

| Community Health

The goal is “to normalize the conversations that we know are really challenging but we also think will help to lay the foundation for how we can move forward together in the county,” said Samia Byrd, Arlington County’s chief race and equity officer.

Local governments across the nation, including in New York and Minnesota, are brainstorming ways to address racial disparities in their jurisdictions. While critics have dismissed the initiatives as vaguely defined or public relations stunts, advocates say they are a necessary step toward real policy change.

In Arlington, officials said the dialogues are part of a years-long focus on addressing equity issues, rather than a newly formulated response to racial justice demonstrations this summer in the region and throughout the country.

“This is not about just responding to the murder of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and the protests that have existed in communities,” said Arlington County Board

Question: When was ASTRO founded and what is its mission?

My cousin Michael and I founded ASTRO in 2014. Our mission is to champion equity among diverse populations by innovating health-promoting programs that improve the way people live, learn, work, and play.

Q: On Oct. 5, the Social Enterprise Greenhouse announced that it was providing ASTRO with a $25,000 loan. What will you use the money for?

Funds acquired through this loan will provide working capital for ASTRO to expand our operations and offer day care services to adult populations. We originally started out in adult services, but the community need that took precedence was providing a safe place for kids to be during the out-of-school time, and this is where we have focused the majority of our efforts over the years.

Now that many adults have been displaced from their day programs due to COVID-19 restrictions on numbers, there

California launches new ‘health equity metric’ focused on disparities of COVID-19 impact

October 7, 2020

The first-in-the-nation approach is designed to focus on the disproportionate impact that coronavirus is having on California’s most disadvantaged communities.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — Along with the case rate and testing positivity numbers we have all grown used to in California, for the first time Tuesday, the state also issued a new health equity metric.

The first-in-the-nation approach is designed to focus on the disproportionate impact that coronavirus is having on the county’s most disadvantaged communities.

This new metric looks to focus on the disparities COVID-19 is having on communities of color, motivating counties to invest more resources in those specific communities to reduce the rates of transmission and be able to move more quickly into a less restrictive color tier.

“Across the board nationally, we know that COVID-19 is ravaging low-income minority communities,” said Mauricio Torre, vice-president of programs and operations for South Bay Community Services based in

Rising Temperatures Undermine Academic Success and Equity

October 7, 2020

Hotter daytimes are thwarting students’ academic progress and exacerbating long-standing educational inequities for people of color, according to researchers who examined the issue in more than 50 countries.

The report, published yesterday in the journal Nature Human Behavior, used two major datasets to track the relationship between students’ exposure to soaring temperatures and their learning outcomes. The data revealed that additional days above 80 degrees Fahrenheit inhibit students’ performance on standardized tests that are meant to measure educational achievement and cognitive ability.

“Temperature has been shown to affect working memory, stamina and cognitive performance, and to lead individuals to reduce time spent engaging in labour activities,” the researchers wrote. “This suggests that, in addition to the channels above, heat may directly affect students’ capacity to learn or teachers’ ability and willingness to teach.”

Co-author Joshua Goodman, a professor of education and economics at Boston University, said the findings have

Actors’ Equity Association Slams Cuts to Live Theater Actors’ Health Plan

Union president says she is “deeply frustrated” that cuts were made without study into how it affects actors of color and those with lower wages

The Actors’ Equity Association, which represents actors and stage managers in live theater, is upset with the changes made by the Equity League to the stage actors’ health plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The changes will increase the minimum number of weeks that actors will have to work per year to qualify for the health plan. Currently, members who work 11 weeks qualify for six months of coverage, and 19 weeks earns a year of coverage.

As the plan is jointly managed by trustees from both the union and employers, Association President Kate Shindle and the union’s council voted in favor of a resolution directing union trustees to withdraw support from the changes and to postpone any public announcement regarding the health plan
