| Better Health

As many people head to the polls to cast their vote in the 2020 presidential election, there is another important decision millions of Americans will make: choosing their health care coverage for 2021.

Annual or open enrollment season is here, a time when more than 2.7 million people in Kentucky and millions of Americans across the country will have the opportunity to select or switch their health insurance plan for the coming year.

Enrollment periods aren’t the same for everyone, so there are key dates to keep in mind depending on your situation:

• Many employers set aside a two- to three-week period between September and December when employees can select health benefits for the following year.

• Medicare Annual Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year.

To guide you during this important time, here are some tips that may help lead you to better health and

Tip 2: Take advantage of a plan that offers telehealth visits and other resources to help you navigate health from home. An increasingly popular health care choice, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been telehealth or virtual visits, which enable people to connect 24/7 with a health care provider via a smartphone, tablet or personal computer. It’s designed to be an easier, more affordable way to talk to a doctor about common health issues. Often, telehealth is available to members of employer-sponsored, individual and Medicare Advantage plans.

Tip 3: Review plan benefits that can help you save money, like wellness incentives. Many health plans now offer financial incentives that reward you for taking healthier actions, such as completing a health survey, exercising or avoiding nicotine. Many plans, including Medicare Advantage plans, offer gym memberships and wellness programs for members at no additional cost.

Tip 4: Anticipate next year’s health expenses.

The Health 202: Republican-backed ACA lawsuit also threatens Medicaid as enrollment grows during pandemic

October 9, 2020

| Health Center

But the health-care law’s Medicaid expansion played a bigger role in extending health coverage – and is now enrollment is surging amid the coronavirus pandemic. Coverage for Americans enrolled in this program is also threatened by the lawsuit, a detail getting far less attention on the campaign trail.

Nearly 4 million more people enrolled in the health insurance program for the low income between February and June.

Medicaid enrollment grew 6.2 percent over the spring and early summer, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported this week.

It’s an abrupt reversal of the direction enrollment had previously been moving as it trended downward over the last several years. Yet the surge isn’t terribly surprising, given the nation’s widespread job losses during the first wave of the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. More than one in five Americans – about 75 million – now rely on Medicaid or the Children’s

“We’re excited to offer this valuable resource to our clients,” said Kirk Rothrock, Chief Executive Officer of Versant Health. “Because many employers have canceled in-person open enrollment fairs to limit the spread of COVID-19, we sought to provide a technology-enabled experience where visitors can learn more about their vision plan and the connections between eye health and overall wellness in a fun and interesting way.”

In many ways, the experience is superior to an in-person event in that it is available 24/7 and can be accessed by either computer or mobile device. The experience features a video, access to a Vision Loss Simulator and an infographic gallery where visitors can learn about important aspects of their vision plan. Visitors can also enjoy an interactive video game, similar to PAC-MAN
