October 12, 2020

| Health Benefits

It’s that time of year again — open enrollment season is approaching, giving many Americans an opportunity to sit down and go over their employer-sponsored workplace benefits for next year.

This year, amid the coronavirus pandemic, more than 70% of employees plan to spend more time reviewing voluntary benefit options offered by their employer, according to a September survey by Voya Financial.

While most employees are generally familiar with their employer-sponsored health insurance and retirement plans, they may be overlooking other benefits that could help them save money or better protect against an event such as an accident or illness.

“You want to see if there’s anything else out there that you could be taking advantage of to improve your your health, or your financial health or both,” said Kim Buckey, vice president of client services at benefits consultant DirectPath. “We don’t want to miss out on something better and

The children of Pedro Cano claim the meatpacking facility their father worked at did not have appropriate precautions in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus

The family of a man who worked for Tyson Foods has pressed charges against the company after he died of coronavirus earlier this year.

Pedro Cano, 51, was a meatpacker working “elbow-to-elbow,” the suit claims, with fellow maskless and gloveless employees at a pork processing plant in eastern Iowa in April when he contracted COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel virus that has thrown the world into a pandemic.

A lawsuit is accusing Tyson of “gross negligence” after not informing factory workers of proper safety precautions to prevent being exposed to the virus.

World Mental Health Day, October 10, arrives at a time during which corporate commitment to mental health and recovery is at the top of the news. One of the largest trends is in coaching programs, popularized in the 1980s. Historically, support for mental fitness has been most readily found at the extremes — the corporate elite and those with mental illness or substance abuse issues. Questions about how unregulated coaching programs differ from licensed medical professionals—and who’s best suited to help from a coach—are being asked by leaders nationwide.

I asked experts how they might explain the objective of business-related coaching programs in particular.

For you to attract the best candidates for your organization, you need a competitive compensation package. In this day and age where remote work is on the rise and workers value work-life balance more than ever, a reasonable salary is no longer enough. It takes a well-rounded compensation plan to wow the talent you’re looking for.

Ultimately, benefits include everything outside of an individual’s salary. This means health insurance, bonuses, 401ks (4013bs for churches), and vacation days, but for churches, it can also include life insurance, housing allowances, sabbatical packages, education allowances and so much more. Benefits are critical because they help employees by cutting out some of their expenses so they are able to use their salary on their other expenses. Providing this added cushion
