Lack of diversity among cardiovascular health-care professionals continues

Despite working for more than two decades to address underrepresentation of women in cardiology, disparities among cardiovascular professionals continue to exist. Profound inequities also exist for individuals underrepresented in medicine, such as African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans, who constitute 32 percent of the U.S. population but only eight percent of practicing cardiologists.

“The disparities amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic present disturbing evidence that we are far from cardiovascular healthcare equity in the work place,” says Emelia J. Benjamin, MD, ScM, professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and corresponding author of a Comment in the journal Nature Reviews Cardiology. “Individuals, leaders and institutions must prioritize research, policies, and structures to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging that is essential to advancing workforce excellence and cardiovascular health.”

Diversity and equity in the health-care workforce have been shown to benefit patients and

Recently, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to end racial and gender-sensitivity training for federal agencies. He later extended the ban to federal contractors, claiming that topics such as white privilege and critical race theory were “divisive, anti-American propaganda.” Additionally, a Trump administration memo directed agencies to cancel these contracts for suggesting the U.S. is “an inherently racist or evil country.”

The administration’s move contradicts the open, actionable discourse that diversity and inclusion training promotes. When world leaders denounce useful, evidence-based programs, it suggests that company leaders and organizational managers should ignore these programs, too.

However, diversity and inclusion training speaks to the very core of the issues that organizations face right now with employee engagement and well-being. People who don’t feel included in a company’s structure and

Introducing the Men’s Health Strength in Diversity Initiative, a three-month program designed to help trainers from marginalized communities strengthen their brands and jumpstart their fitness careers.

FITNESS IS FOR EVERYONE: It’s one of our core beliefs here at Men’s Health, and it’s been at the beating heart of every issue of this magazine since our founding thirty two years ago.

The fitness industry, though, has a problem with diversity, equity, and inclusion. A big one. From educational and financial obstacles that prevent too many people from becoming fitness experts to empty and enduring assumptions about who and what fitness is for, a whole weight-rack full of systemic issues (racism, homophobia, ageism, to name a few) have consistently deprived trainers from marginalized communities the tools they need to build a career in fitness. They also prevent these men and women from bringing clients in their own communities

Diversity emerges as key challenge for coronavirus drug trials

October 2, 2020

| Health Article

The coronavirus pandemic has hit disproportionately hard in Black and Hispanic communities, where infection rates and death rates have reached staggering levels.

But as scientists race to develop vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and treatments for the COVID-19 disease it causes, many trials are struggling to enroll people from those very communities.

Government and private sector scientists trying to enroll tens of thousands of Americans in a handful of studies of potential coronavirus vaccines are working overtime to reach out to underrepresented communities. But they have reported running up against rumors and misinformation in minority communities in places like Seattle and New York City, where mistrust remains deeply rooted.

That mistrust comes from America’s long history of discrimination against minority groups, some of whom have been used as human guinea pigs for sadistic experiments.

The U.S. Public Health Service denied treatment to 600 Black men who had syphilis, even after

OKLAHOMA CITY — A large RV, customized as a health education classroom on wheels, is among the new projects the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine plans with a $2.8 million grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration.

The grant is a one-year supplement that augments an initial $4.7 million award to the OU College of Medicine last year. The aim of the grant is to recruit, retain and admit students from rural, tribal and medically underserved areas, and to expand the primary care experience among current medical students. Data shows that students from those groups who attend medical school and residency in Oklahoma are more likely to return to their communities to practice medicine.

“Of Oklahoma’s 77 counties, 76 have a shortage of primary care physicians, and the need is particularly great in rural areas, underserved communities and tribes. The ultimate goal of this grant is to
