  • Garlic has a high nutritional content for its size, with significant amounts of vitamin C, selenium, manganese, and iron.
  • There is also some evidence that consuming garlic may help strengthen the immune system, reduce risk for certain cancers, improve heart health, and even boost athletic performance.
  • To achieve these health benefits, you should consume no more than 1 to 2 cloves of fresh garlic each day.
  • This article was medically reviewed by Samantha Cassetty, MS, RD, nutrition and wellness expert with a private practice based in New York City.

Garlic is an easy flavor addition to many types of meals. And beyond its widespread use for taste and seasoning, garlic can actually provide notable health benefits.

Here are five benefits of garlic and how much you should add to your diet.

Gluten in a Baby’s Diet ‘Could Prevent Coeliac Disease’

September 29, 2020

| Health Article

Introducing high amounts of gluten into a baby’s diet could prevent them from developing coeliac disease, according to a study.

The strategy could have implications for other autoimmune diseases, say the research team led by King’s College London (KCL), but further studies would be needed before it could be applied in practice.

Current advice is that babies should not be introduced to solid food until they are around 6 months old.

Wheat-based Biscuits From 4 Months

The study, published in JAMA Paediatrics, was a secondary analysis from the Enquiring About Tolerance (EAT) study – a randomised trial of the early introduction of allergenic solids into a baby’s diet.

Around half of 1004 babies from England and Wales were given 4g of wheat-protein as wheat-based biscuits per week when they were aged between 4 and 6 months. This was equivalent to a gluten dose of approximately 3.2 g/week, or 500

To Your Good Health: Diet is powerful tool to boost heart health

September 29, 2020

| Good Health

I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings — typically 150+/90 — was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8 to 10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this?

Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to … Read More

The era of the television brought with it the TV dinner—a fast, convenient meal that, while nutritionally questionable, meant the whole family could gather together on the sofa to enjoy “The Ed Sullivan Show” and eat their Swanson Salisbury steak, too.

Over the next several decades, advancements in technology and the ubiquity of streaming services has allowed for the proliferation of binge-watching culture, where hours spent sedentary rack up faster than “Jeopardy” points, and greasy fast food is only a few taps on your smartphone away.

Chris Wharton, assistant dean of innovation and strategic initiatives at Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions, whose research interests include lifestylewide behavior change, wanted to know what kind of relationship the time we spend in front of screens has with various health behaviors and factors.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the world is shifting and we all are being able to look at our health more closely. September 29 is celebrated as World Heart Day to raise awareness against the deadly illness. World Heart Day was launched by the World Heart Federation as an annual event in the year 2000, and since then, widespread measures are taken to remind people across the globe to take care of their hearts.

Diet and exercise play a key role in maintaining the health of the cardiovascular system. While exercise improves circulation and keeps you fit, a good diet helps keep the arteries unclogged and protects them from damage. There are certain foods that can significantly promote your heart health. Here are 5 foods that you should be eating to maximize your heart health.

Keto diet could be bad for your heart, researchers say

September 28, 2020

| Health

The ketogenic or “keto” diet is a popular diet trend that involves eating high amounts of fats and protein while limiting carbohydrate intake.

While there are said to be some benefits of this diet, such as reducing appetite and lowering blood sugar levels, the findings of a new meta-analysis suggest that this diet trend could be bad for heart health.

Researchers at National Jewish Health reviewed the findings of past scientific studies on ketogenic as well as intermittent fasting diets, finding that while both “do seem to help people lose weight in the short-term, and modest evidence suggests they may contribute to cardiovascular health,” they wrote in a news release regarding the findings, “these diets also allow consumption of foods that are known to increase cardiovascular risk and are unlikely to be as effective at preventing heart disease as well-established nutritional guidelines currently recommended by health experts.”

The Health Benefits of a Whole Foods Diet

September 28, 2020

| Health Benefits

A bag of chips or box of cookies tempt at the supermarket and packets of snacks lure us at the convenience store. Nutrition research has consistently shown that whole unprocessed foods that are straight from the ground, tree, or bush—including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and seeds—improve health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. On the other hand, processed foods (meaning foods that have been altered, refined, stripped of some of their components, or else foods that had ingredients added to them) tend to contribute to chronic disease. Think cookies, cakes, white flour, chips, margarine, and donuts. These foods are easy to spot; if they don’t exist naturally in nature (or close to how they appear), they’re processed.
