New York City Didn’t Focus Community Outreach in Covid-19 Hot Spots Before Surges

October 8, 2020

| Community Health

This summer New York City’s public-hospital system identified the areas most at risk of a resurgence of Covid-19 and enlisted community-based organizations to help educate residents and test and trace for the virus.

Now, with the new coronavirus resurgent across pockets of the city, some say this summer’s effort was insufficient and focused on the wrong neighborhoods.

Earlier this week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered new restrictions on communities around the state where the virus has rebounded. The affected areas have higher positivity rates of Covid-19 than the rest of the state and include communities in nine ZIP Codes in Brooklyn and Queens that the city has been tracking for weeks as hot spots. Large Orthodox Jewish communities reside in most of the hot spots.

Of the nine ZIP Codes targeted by the city, only one was listed as a high priority this summer by the Health + Hospitals

The claim: Trump would be fine if he hadn’t taken a COVID-19 test

After President Donald Trump announced he’d become one of the more than 7 million Americans diagnosed with COVID-19, critics are remembering how he responded to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Trump’s mistake was getting tested,” Bob Cesca posted on Facebook on Oct. 2. “If he hadn’t been tested, he’d be fine now.”

Facebook users responded to Cesca’s sarcasm and implied reference to Trump’s past commentary with roughly 100 comments, more than 3,000 shares and 1,100 likes and reactions.

In 2020, misinformation is abundant and sarcasm is easily misunderstood so USA TODAY took a look at

COVID-Positive Trump Ignores CDC Advice to Take Joyride, With Grim Secret Service Agents in Tow

After teasing a “little surprise visit” via video on Twitter, President Trump left the hospital on Sunday afternoon to wave to supporters from the back seat of an SUV. “It’s been a very interesting journey. I learned a lot about COVID,” Trump, who is still suffering from the coronavirus, said in the video. “I learned it by really going to school, this is the real school, this isn’t the ‘let’s read the book’ school, and I get it, and I understand it,” he added. Then, contradicting his own words and the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the president left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s presidential suite to wave to supporters from a car—a decision that forced at least two Secret Service agents to don personal protective equipment

Trump Reportedly Didn’t Disclose COVID-19 Diagnosis Until Second Test Was Taken

October 5, 2020

| Health Article

Donald Trump did not disclose that he tested positive for COVID-19 until after a second test was taken to confirm the results of the first, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Sources told the publication that Trump knew that he was infected with the disease that has killed over 200,000 Americans after taking a rapid test when he called in to Fox News on Thursday night. During his Fox News chat, Trump talked about White House aide Hope Hicks testing positive and said that he would get the results from his COVID-19 test soon. The reality television star traveled with Hicks on Air Force one earlier in the week to Tuesday’s debate and to a rally on Wednesday. According to the WSJ, Trump followed White House protocols, which stated that a more thorough second test that takes “a specimen from deeper in the nasal passage” is undergone once the first

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said the president “remains in good spirits, has mild symptoms, and has been working throughout the day.”

USA TODAY

Despite recognizing the threat of the coronavirus, President Donald Trump told journalist Bob Woodward he had no fear of contracting COVID-19 himself.

“Well, you’re risking getting it, of course, the way you move around and have those briefings and deal with people. Are you worried about that?” Woodward asks on tapes of his conversations with Trump that released for his new book “Rage.”

“No, I’m not. I don’t know why I’m not. I’m not,” Trump replied. The recording can be heard on CNN’s website.

Trump is being treated at Walter Reed Military Medical Center after he and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for COVID-19. Leading up to the test, Trump had campaigned vigorously before crowds that weren’t wearing masks.

Hydroxychloroquine didn’t protect health care workers from coronavirus, study shows

September 30, 2020

Another study is warning against President Trump’s debunked coronavirus treatment.

Despite being studied as an early coronavirus treatment, studies have found the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine ineffective and even dangerous when used to fight coronavirus. A study published Wednesday added to that evidence, finding that the drug was ineffective in preventing health care workers from contracting coronavirus.

For the study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania focused on 125 health care workers. Some of them received hydroxychloroquine for eight weeks from April to July, while others got a placebo. Throughout that time, four of the 64 workers who got the drug ended up with COVID-19, while four of the 61 who got the placebo did as well. Six of those who tested positive developed coronavirus symptoms, but none needed to be hospitalized. As a result, the researchers said they “cannot recommend the routine use of

5 big financial issues voters didn’t hear much (or anything) about in the Trump-Biden debate

For a rancorous first debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, there was a whole lot that went unsaid.

Unemployment is coming off double-digit rates in the spring after government shutdowns to deal with the coronavirus outbreak, yet joblessness is still high. But the candidates didn’t delve deeply into solutions for joblessness before cross-talk reigned. The same goes for the prospect of another round of fiscal stimulus and more federal unemployment benefits.

Health care costs were another issue discussed briefly before turning into a slugfest. Meanwhile, millions of renters could be facing eviction starting next year, but interruptions — many from Trump — crowded out talk on that issue.

But a USA TODAY analysis shows the state’s positive case count among kids aged 5 to 17 declined through late September after a peak in July. Among the counties seeing surges in overall cases, it’s college-age adults – not school children – driving the trend, the analysis found.
