The University of Detroit Mercy will be adding a 40,000 square foot campus in Novi to offer additional graduate level and health education programs amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The university has acquired the former South University building, located at 41555 W. 12 Mile Road, as community demand for health care graduates increases during the pandemic. The new location will provide access to the institution’s nationally ranked programs for students who wish to stay close to home and their employer.

President Antoine M. Garibaldi said the new campus offers another example of the institution’s bright future as the state and country continue to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Detroit Mercy’s acquisition of this new campus will allow the university to expand academic programs in the health professions and other fields in which we are strong and that are in demand,” he said. “In addition to this campus’s proximity to several medical

Three Michigan voters are disappointed by the first debate between Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden (Sept. 30)

The claim: Photos show Joe Biden and Gretchen Whitmer ignoring face-covering rules in Detroit

Old photos circulating online are being used out of context to claim that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer were recently seen ignoring public health guidance.

“Apparently these pictures were taken at the DAC last night. I see Whitmer in the background. No mask wearing and no social distancing. So whats going on here? Didn’t the Governor mandate mask wearing in public at all times and staying 6ft apart?” reads a Sept. 10 Facebook post that has been shared over 5,000 times.

Other users posted similar versions of the claim, sharing a screenshot of the same photo with the caption, “While OUR children are being mandated to wear

Detroit issues COVID-19 order that requires masks, social distancing

Detroiters must wear a mask at indoor and outdoor gatherings and businesses must maintain social distancing and capacity limits, Detroit city officials announced Friday.

Detroit Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair issued a new COVID-19 public health order which takes effect immediately and reinstates aspects of the emergency declarations previously issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, which were undercut by a state Supreme Court ruling. The state health department on Friday issued a sweeping order that largely mirrors those put in place by Whitmer.

Detroit’s order gives guidance for businesses, schools, workplaces and public gatherings to curb the spread of COVID-19.

“If you live, visit or operate a business in the city of Detroit, you only have to look in one place and that’s Director Fair’s order,” Mayor Mike Duggan said Friday. “And what we are going to do is make sure the city has certainty and continuity.”

Detroit’s chief public health officer on Friday issued an order that maintains the state’s rules for wearing facial coverings to combat COVID-19.

Mayor Mike Duggan and the city’s Public Health Officer Denise Fair announced the move during a news conference livestreamed from the city’s Public Safety Headquarters downtown.

The move is intended to clear up confusion over rules for wearing masks in public and limiting the number of people in gatherings after a Michigan Supreme Court decision last week struck down Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s authority to establish mandates.

Duggan said the city’s public health officer was issuing the order to maintain Whitmer’s emergency orders.

“What we are doing is making sure that the steps the governor has taken continue to protect the city,” the mayor said. “We are going to make sure the city has certainty and continuity.”

Detroit — The city is moving its free regional COVID-19 testing operation indoors.

Beginning Tuesday, Detroit will do all testing for the virus inside the Joseph Walker Williams Community Center, 8431 Rosa Parks Boulevard.

The city in March stood up one of the state’s first drive-up testing sites at the former Michigan State Fairgrounds on the east side in partnership with area health care systems. In a six-month span, more than 55,000 tests were conducted there. The fairgrounds site shut down Sept. 24.

“The team that has been running the testing site at the fairgrounds did an extraordinary job making it smooth and efficient for Detroiters and our suburban neighbors to have convenient access to testing,” Mayor Mike Duggan said in a statement. “I am confident that the new site will run just as well and that we’ll continue to contain the spread of the virus through the knowledge of
