100-Plus Active COVID Cases After ‘Superspreader’ Event

October 13, 2020

WEST LONG BRANCH – More than 100 active cases were reported at Monmouth University after a “superspreader” event, the university announced this weekend.

Since first reporting a notable increase in COVID-19 cases on campus, the university has learned – through extensive contact tracing efforts – about the likely origin, said President Patrick F. Leahy.

The increase in cases among students was tied to an off-campus event hosted two weeks ago, Leahy said.

“An overwhelming majority of the recent cases we have seen can be traced back to this isolated superspreader event,” he said. He did not provide further details.

Moving forward, Leahy said, the college needs 100 percent cooperation from the campus community “in order to resume our fall semester as planned.”

“I cannot emphasize enough the critical importance of compliance with Monmouth University COVID-19 protocols and state of New Jersey health and safety measures to effectively protect the Monmouth

Atlantic Health launches COVID recovery center

October 12, 2020

| Health Center

As COVID-19 survivors’ battles persist, Atlantic Health System on Oct. 9 said it launched the Atlantic COVID Recovery Center, a multidisciplinary program based in Cedar Knolls and Summit to help this growing patient population recover.

The center provides a central point for patients to seek care, working with health care providers to design an individualized, tailored plan for recovery to guide them to medical specialists who help carry it out.

In the nearly seven months since COVID-19 arose throughout communities in New Jersey, many survivors of the virus are now finding recovery to be elusive. Informally known among the medical community as “long-haulers,” the challenge of figuring out how to manage these conditions has introduced another dimension to this pandemic.

Whether their initial infections were severe or mild, many patients experience a wide-ranging combination of persistent conditions – such as fatigue, difficulty breathing, and joint and chest pain. Each patient

1 in 2 people suffering anxiety, depression during Covid.

By Samantha Walravens

As 2020 drags on and the Covid-19 pandemic continues to ravage the world, the number of people reporting mental health issues, including anxiety, depression and stress, has skyrocketed.

According to recent data, symptoms of anxiety and depressive disorders have more than tripled among U.S. adults compared to this time last year—with women and Black and Latinx communities most acutely impacted.

And in a study released today, on World Mental Health Day, by the International Committee of the Red Cross (IRCR), over half — 51 per cent — of respondents surveyed across seven countries reported that the global health crisis has negatively impacted their mental health.

The data are disturbing,

COVID Will Likely Make 300,000 Kids Lose Health Insurance

October 12, 2020

| Health Plans

According to a series of new reports, one from the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute’s Center for Children and Families, and another from the Urban Institute, the state of health insurance for American children is bleak — and has been getting worse since President Trump took office in 2016. The past two years have represented a rapid expansion of the uninsured rate of American kids, and 2020 is expected to be even worse, with some 300,000+ kids expected to lose their insurance due to massive unemployment and the oncoming economic recession. After all, millions of American parents lost their jobs because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and millions of those American parents as a result lost their health insurance, which in America, is tied to employment. Since Americans can usually only access health insurance when they have a job that offers it, losing their job represents a massive blow to their

Health care workers say it’s getting harder to get paid time off for COVID

October 12, 2020

| Health Center

As a part-time nurse at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Megan Murphy has twice been forced to take a leave from work this summer while waiting to get tested for COVID-19.

On both occasions, Murphy had good reason to believe she’d been exposed to the virus and stayed home, as required by hospital policies, to limit spread of the disease. Each time, it took four to five days to line up an appointment and get the results.

Both tests came back negative. But a snafu delayed the results of Murphy’s first test and left her without enough paid time off to cover her second leave. As a result, she lost two days’ pay and has no sick time left.

“I’m still going to be honest” in disclosing future exposures, she said. “But my concern is, what happens when people can’t afford to have two days unpaid, and they

Five Orthodox Jewish institutions in New York City were fined $15,000 fines violation of the health code amid the coronavirus pandemic for having more than 10 people inside, according to reports.

The religious spaces in Borough Park, the site of protests last week, weren’t shut down because police don’t have the authority.

New restrictions temporarily limit the size of religious gatherings in the COVID-19 hot spots. The restrictions limit attendance at all houses of worship to 25% capacity, or a maximum of 10 people.

Six coronavirus clusters have cropped up in Brooklyn and Queens, as well as Broome, Orange and Rockland counties. The state has closed schools and nonessential businesses in those areas and limited gatherings.

The number of New Yorkers hospitalized with the coronavirus continues to rise, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday, as authorities heightened their focus on banning mass gatherings in COVID-19

Trump says he’s ‘immune’ to COVID. His doctors won’t say when he last tested negative

October 11, 2020

| Health

President Donald Trump on Sunday said he may have the “protective glow” of immunity from COVID-19 although it remains unknown when he last tested negative for the disease.

In an extensive interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, Trump claimed he “beat” the novel coronavirus, passing the “highest standards” for proving so. Trump said he is also no longer taking any medications to combat the virus after being placed on a heavy steroid typically given to individuals with more severe cases.

“It looks like I’m immune for, I don’t know, maybe a long time, maybe a short time,” he said. “It could be a lifetime. Nobody really knows, but I’m immune. So the president is in very good shape to fight the battles.”

As the Associated Press reported, COVID-19 reinfection is unlikely for at least three months after acquiring the virus, but few diseases come with lifetime immunity. Researchers said in
