Council Rock North Shuts Down Athletics Amid Rising COVID Cases

NEWTOWN, PA — All athletics and activity programs for Council Rock North High School students are shut down until further notice, Principal Susan C. McCarthy told parents in an email Tuesday afternoon.

The move comes one day after the high school decided to cancel in-person classes for the week after three students reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

Superintendent Robert Fraser’s decision to close the school went against the advice of Bucks County Health Director David Damsker, who did not recommend closing school.

The health department will only recommend closing a school when there is a clear indication that the district’s health and safety plan isn’t working, Damsker told Patch, and there’s no evidence at this point that transmission is happening within schools.

“School closures are very disruptive and don’t help stop people from getting sick outside of school,” Damsker said. “If people continue to have parties and gather, closing school

Stranded pedestrians in Dallas’ Joppa community get a lift from City Council

The southern Dallas community of Joppa got some much-needed relief Tuesday when the Dallas City Council allocated $500,000 to provide immediate, free, “on-demand” transportation via Dallas Area Rapid Transit during construction of a long-awaited pedestrian bridge over the nearby Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

Access has long been a problem in Joppa — pronounced jop-ee — a freedman’s town founded in 1872 by emancipated slave Henry Critz Hines. Joppa, with an estimated population of about 750, lies 6 miles southeast of downtown, between the wetlands of the Trinity River and the Union Pacific train tracks.

Adam Bazaldua, whose District 7 includes Joppa, was among those voting for the measure, which the council approved unanimously, with nary a murmur of dissent.

Even so, Bazaldua called it “an example of what should be considered a basic quality of life that we are unfortunately viewing as a celebration. Because, don’t get me wrong, this

The Marion Police Department will soon have a crisis counselor embedded within the department.

During its Thursday night meeting, the Marion City Council voted unanimously to approve the agreement between the department and Foundation 2 Crisis Services for the law enforcement liaison. Foundation 2 is a nonprofit human services agency that offers mobile crisis services.

The crisis counselor will work with police officers on intervention regarding mental health-related calls to help with de-escalation and to assess where individuals should be referred for treatment and follow up services.

According to a department news release, the anticipated benefits of the new arrangement include a reduction in officer time spent responding to mental health-related calls, diverting individuals with mental health concerns from jail to behavioral health treatment, onsite consultation for officers regarding community interactions related to mental health, a reduction in officer’s use of force by utilizing alternative techniques and an increase in

Moorestown Council Candidates Spar On Transparency, Fiscal Health

| Community Health

MOORESTOWN, NJ — The six candidates seeking three open seats on Moorestown Council recently went head-to-head over issues of transparency and the fiscal health of the township at a community forum that was put together by MooreUnity.

They did agree that the township needed to be more business-friendly and that defunding the police locally was not a good idea. The forum was held inside at the Perkins Center for the Arts and moderated by 6 ABC’s Rick Williams.

Democrats Dave Zipin, Sue Mammarella and Jake VanDyken are running against Republicans, Barbara Omert, Doug Maute and Vick Bobadilla for the three open, four-year seats on Moorestown Council in the Nov. 3 elections.

The Republicans attacked the current council when it comes to transparency, with Omert advocating for an open-bidding process.

“Council should have more face-to-face interaction with the public and businesses,” Omert said. “They should be more accessible to the public.”

Thousands of New York City hotel workers have lost their jobs due to the coronavirus. Now, their union is being forced to slash the health benefits it provides its members.

The New York Hotel Trades Council is shutting down two of its employee health centers — including the $120 million Brooklyn facility it opened in 2017 — and reducing operations at four others in Manhattan and Queens, according to a notice with the state Department of Labor. The other center it’s closing is in Harlem.

The reductions will impact 642 employees at those locations.

The move is a significant blow to the powerful hotel union, which has long been able to provide good-paying jobs for its roughly 40,000 working-class members through tough negotiations with hotel owners to secure

Nutrition council: Eat healthy food

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon (The Freeman) – September 28, 2020 – 12:00am

CEBU, Philippines — The National Nutrition Council (NNC)-7 of the Department of Health continues to encourage everyone to eat healthy and exercise at home, even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“All of us are vulnerable to COVID-19 and this vulnerability is affected by our nutritional status,” said NNC-7 Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Parolita Mission in a recently concluded virtual forum on overweight and obesity awareness.

Mission said that more families are consuming junk foods or foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients, and coupled with sedentary lifestyle.

She added that overweight and obesity should not be taken lightly as these often lead to a lot of health complications, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and a host of other lifestyle diseases that could lead to an untimely death.

Based on the
