This Doctor Is Teaching Black Youth To Cope With Mental Health Issues

The COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus pandemic, has caused many Americans across the country to adapt to a new reality following the devastating economic fallout. According to the CDC, 40% of Americans have reported they were struggling with mental health issues since June, with 31% reporting symptoms of anxiety and depression. Young adults and teenagers have also been severely impacted, with many unsure about the future of their academic pursuits with school closures due to social distancing restrictions and a pivot to online learning.

To help with the transition, programs like Peer Health Exchange are working with young adults to help them learn to cope with their mental health issues. Angela Glymph, Ph.D., vice president of Programs and Strategic Learning of Peer Health Exchange, discusses why organizations like hers are so important especially during this time.

“I’ve been working with the organization [since] 2014,” says Glymph in an interview with

Events slated for youths facing grief

Children and teens who have experienced the loss of a loved one will discover ways to address their grief and learn to cope at Camp Good Hope and Teen Encounter, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14, in Homosassa Springs. This event brings together grief professionals and caring volunteers to help children learn about loss and healing and move forward during a day of group discussion, recreation, arts and crafts and fun.

To register a child for Camp Good Hope (for ages 6 through grade 5) or Teen Encounter (for middle and high school students), call 352-249-1470 or email [email protected]

Camper applications must be completed by Nov. 6. A $10-per-child registration fee reserves your space(s). Grants are available upon request. Camp observes CDC guidelines for safety and gatherings. Since space therefore may be limited, be sure to reserve your spot as soon as possible.

How Will We Cope With the Pandemic Fall?

Once we’ve acknowledged the hardship, “the critical piece is to not stay stuck there,” Dr. Teachman said. “We can recognize that things are hard, without wallowing.” Identify what we have lost (such as socializing), and then find alternatives — maybe online meet-ups, a pod with another family or simply bundling up.

“If you have the opportunity, invest in a really good winter coat,” Dr. Teachman said. “Look into a little heater to put on a patio.”

Planning ahead is important. “Plan now before it gets very cold,” Dr. Teachman said. This is partly for practical reasons — that heater might be on back-order — and partly for psychological ones, as “it’s actually much harder to make and implement plans once you’re already feeling anxious and stressed.” Dr. Dagnew noted that uncertainty is a key reason we feel stress, so “having a plan is the antidote for uncertainty.”

Cope with mental health issues when you work remote.

Working from home has a lot of benefits. Who doesn’t love dressing in sweatpants every day, avoiding the commute and enjoying quality time with their dog? But working from home also has plenty of drawbacks—and some of those are related to a significant negative impact on mental health.

In April, a large study found 75% of people were experiencing social isolation and this was correlated with working from home. The more people worked from home, the more they felt socially isolated. Now, another just-released study is highlighting the same challenges, but with even greater reports of mental health challenges.

The just-released study by Oracle and Workplace Intelligence surveyed 12,000 people across 11 countries and found the following:

  • 78% of the global workforce reported negative impacts to their mental health this year.
  • 42% say their productivity has plummeted.
  • 41% say they

Mental health days. Meeting-free times. Companies are adding new benefits to help workers cope

A few months into working remotely, Jamie Coakley noticed a worrisome trend at her company: 70% of employees had not taken more than two days off since the beginning of the year.

“We were going to run into a brick wall pretty soon,” said Coakley, vice president of people at IT solutions company Electric.

The company changed to a flexible vacation policy, but that still wasn’t enough. Employees were working longer hours, having a hard time disconnecting from work and felt perpetually behind.

So Electric announced over the summer that the entire company would close on the first Friday of every month for a mental health and wellness day.

Giving everybody the day off means the work doesn’t pile up while you’re off and it eliminates the fear of missing out on something.

With everything going on this year, mental health has become a major

Mental health support helps USC students cope with stress and anxiety

October 5, 2020

College should be a time when students grow, make new friends and explore their passions. But Americans of college age increasingly report that they feel anxious or lonely — and that was before the upheaval of COVID-19.

USC students can’t hug a friend they see on campus. No longer can they collapse on a couch to share a pizza together or drop by a classmate’s apartment for a Minecraft marathon. University administrators know it hurts, and they understand.

“Many students have shared with us the kinds of reactions they are having: a sense of grief, loss and even frustration,” said Sarah Van Orman, chief health officer for USC Student Health. Safeguarding the physical health of students is important, especially during the pandemic, she said. But USC leaders also are committed to protecting students’ mental and emotional health and helping them build resilience.

That’s why USC students now have 85 psychiatrists,

Mental health issues surface as high school athletes cope without sports during the pandemic

Last March, Catholic High athletic director Lyndsey Boyce gathered all the Crusader athletes together.

She wanted to talk to them about COVID-19 and a possible time schedule about when they could return to the field and courts.

“I gathered them all in the bleachers outside and I said, ‘Listen guys, everybody is saying two weeks, but I’m going to be honest, I think it’s going to be a little bit longer,” Boyce recalled. “But we’re going to be back out here.”

That was six months ago.

At public schools around Hampton Roads and the state, students still aren’t back in school.

Some private schools, including Catholic, have welcomed students back on campus but under strict guidelines.

Athletes have been able to condition and lift weights under social distancing. But there won’t be any organized practices or games in the Tidewater Conference for several months. The conference will hold winter sports
