Infection Control Problems Persist in Nursing Homes During COVID

October 14, 2020

| Health Article

The new analysis draws on self-reported data from nursing homes collected by the federal government over four weeks from late August to late September. While some states fared much worse than others, all 50 states and the District of Columbia had one or more nursing homes that reported inadequate PPE supply, staff shortages, staff infections and resident cases. Forty-seven states reported at least one COVID-19 death among residents.

The analysis found that more than 28,000 residents tested positive for COVID-19 during the four-week reporting period, and more than 5,200 residents died, showing that the virus is still raging in nursing homes. More than 84,000 long-term care residents and staff have died since January, and more than 500,000 residents and staff have contracted the disease, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation’s tally, accounting for roughly 40 percent of the national death toll. Long-term care providers include assisted living, adult day care

How coronavirus’s genetic code can help control outbreaks

October 13, 2020

The six British patients seemed to have little in common besides this: Each was dealing with kidney failure, and each had tested positive for the coronavirus.

They were among scores of virus-stricken people showing up at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge in the early weeks of April. Had they lived in the United States instead of the United Kingdom, the link that allowed the contagion to spread among them might have slipped by unnoticed.

But the U.K. had done something in the early days of the pandemic that the United States and many other nations had not. It funded a national push to repeatedly decode the coronavirus genome as it made its way across the country. The process reveals tiny, otherwise invisible changes in the virus’s genetic code, leaving a fingerprint that gives scientists valuable glimpses into how the disease is spreading. It’s a cutting-edge technique that

GOP Senate Control in Jeopardy Due to Lack of Clear Health Care Message. The Solution Is Price Transparency.

October 13, 2020

| Good Health

Republican control of the Senate is in jeopardy. Tight Senate races in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, North Carolina and elsewhere threaten the GOP’s three-seat majority. RealClearPolitics polling suggests the battle for the Senate is currently a tossup.

Senate Democrats have indicated they are willing to nuke the longstanding legislative filibuster, allowing them to pass legislation with just 51 Senate votes (or 50 if they also win the presidency). This year’s Senate election is, therefore, the most important in the chamber’s history.

Democrats rode their polling advantage in health care to a blue wave victory in the midterm elections in 2018, flipping 41 seats in the House of Representatives and returning the speaker’s gavel to Nancy Pelosi. Senate Republicans risk succumbing to the same fate this year unless they coalesce around meaningful and popular health care reform to help Americans contend with crushing health care costs.

Republicans have no shortage of

Pubs shut in Liverpool as UK tightens virus control measures

October 12, 2020

| Health Article

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday ordered pubs in Liverpool to shut as part of a new strategy to tackle a surge in coronavirus cases, as staff at three field hospitals across the country were told to prepare for a wave of admissions.

The northwest English city is the first to be placed at “very high risk” under a new three-tiered system designed to bring order what has become a complex web of local restrictions.

Johnson, heavily criticised for his government’s response to the outbreak, said he did not want to impose a new nationwide lockdown.

But said he could not allow Covid-19 to “let rip” and risk the death toll — the highest in Europe at almost 43,000 — spiralling even higher.

“This is not how we want to live our lives,” the Conservative leader, who himself was hospitalised with coronavirus in April, told the House of Commons.

Some U.S. doctors flee to New Zealand where the outbreak is under control and science is respected

Dr. Judy Melinek knew it was time to make a change when she started fear for her health and safety.

While working as acting chief forensic pathologist for Alameda County in California, she read early reports about a virus in Wuhan, China. By June, after repeatedly sounding the alarm about the need for health workers to have sufficient personal protective equipment, she’d had enough. She also hoped for temperature checks, social distancing and masks, but she noticed that not all of the staff in her office were taking these steps.

And then an email appeared offering her the opportunity to relocate to New Zealand, a country that has reported less than 2,000 coronavirus cases and 25 deaths, drawing widespread

Coronavirus pushes Trump into a ‘fiasco vortex’ as events spin out of administration’s control

October 9, 2020

| Health Current Events

WASHINGTON — It has never been calm in the White House of Donald Trump. It was never supposed to be calm. From the start, his old-fashioned administration was governed by a motto borrowed from the whiz kids of Silicon Valley: Move fast and break things. If it sometimes looked messy, the president and his closest advisers figured, that was simply the product of moving at a pace to which official Washington was unaccustomed.

That strategy seemed to work, if perhaps less as a governing philosophy than a perpetual “owning of the libs” ready-made for Fox News. Then the coronavirus came along and threw an unruly White House into the kind of cinematic disarray critics had long feared. Now, with the president and many of his closest aides sick, chances for a new coronavirus relief package seemingly scotched via presidential tweet and the presidential campaign rife with uncertainty, it looks as … Read More

With the recent increase in COVID cases and hospitalisations, a medical leader has issued a dire warning that the spread of the disease “could get out of control”.

Helen Stokes-Lampard, chairwoman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, said the “indications are not looking good” as she urged people to stick to local lockdown measures.

She said the nation was at a “tipping point” and warned coronavirus transmission could “get out of control”.

Stokes-Lampard said: “As a society, as a population, we all have a responsibility to do our best to reduce transmission because if this gets out of control, as we fear it is – and we are at that tipping point right now.

“This isn’t a joke, this isn’t scaremongering.”

Referendum 90 allows parental control of sex health education

October 1, 2020

| Health Education

Letters

Please support Referendum 90 on the November ballot. Referendum 90 will uphold the new Washington state law (passed in March 2020) requiring all public schools to teach age-appropriate, inclusive, comprehensive sexual health education to K-12 students.

This would expand the current Washington State Learning Standards and implement essential standards for schools to give students access to the comprehensive communication and social skills needed for healthy lifetimes, free of sexual abuse and assault. These standards simply require the inclusion of age-appropriate communication skills that students need to express and respect sexual consent, protect others as a bystander when they see bullying, and seek appropriate help to avoid sexual abuse or rape.

Local control remains with parents and school boards in each district. Parents are always encouraged to engage in home discussions of their family values, and they can opt their child out of school-based sex ed discussions.

Behavior health center shut down for lack of infection control

The health department said it “immediately closed Clear View Behavioral Health today, using a summary suspension, because of several regulatory violations.”

JOHNSTOWN, Colo. — A behavior health center in Johnstown was shut down by the state on Monday after several regulatory violations, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) said in a news release.

The health department said it “immediately closed Clear View Behavioral Health today, using a summary suspension, because of several regulatory violations.”

The latest violations were found on Sept. 22 after the Health Facilities and Emergency Medical Services Division survey showed multiple deficiencies, including nursing services and infection control.

“We are closely monitoring all healthcare facilities, especially during the pandemic,” said Randy Kuykendall, division director for the Health Facilities and Emergency Medical Services Division under CDPHE. “Patients in facilities are at higher risk of COVID-19 infection due to the ongoing nature of close contact between
