Pence Accuses Harris of ‘Playing Politics with People’s Lives’ by ‘Undermining Confidence’ in Vaccine

Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday accused Senator Kamala Harris of “playing politics with people’s lives” by saying that she would not take a vaccine for the coronavirus if it was endorsed by President Trump.

During Wednesday evening’s vice presidential debate in Salt Lake City, Harris said she would take a vaccine if it were approved by “public health professionals” including Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor for the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force, but not if Trump signed off on it.

“If the doctors tell us that we should take it, I’ll be the first in line to take it, absolutely,” Harris said. “But if Donald Trump tells us that we should take it, I’m not taking it.”

Pence immediately condemned the California senator’s position, saying she could be endangering lives by casting doubt on the efficacy of a potential vaccine against the deadly pathogen.

“The fact that you

Your Good Health: Blood-donation bans improve confidence in safety of supply

dr_keith_roach_with_bkg.jpgDear Dr. Roach: I lived in England in 1985-1986, during the mad cow disease outbreak. Since then, I have been ineligible to give blood. It is one of the few questions they ask. This has been 35 years and, obviously, I don’t have and have never had the disease itself. Is this still a valid reason to rule me out as a blood donor?

B.R.

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was epidemic in the United Kingdom (and to a lesser extent, Ireland and France) from 1981 to 1996. By preventing blood donation from people who lived in the U.K. for more than six months during that time period, it is estimated that 90% of future vCJD could be prevented in the U.S. Incubation periods of 40 years have been reported for a similar disease, kuru, which is why the prohibition against blood donation remains. However, the absolute risk is very low, both

What Employee Benefits Will Help You Retire With Confidence?

October 5, 2020

| Health Benefits

I’m sort of a geek when it comes to retirement planning surveys. I’m always looking for nuggets that are going to help people save more.

Although I know this is a perilous time for employment in general, it’s always essential to know how your employer will help you save for retirement.

“The pandemic has put pressure on the American workforce in ways few could have predicted and employees need support more than ever,” says Jonathan Bennett , head of Group Benefits at The Hartford. “Now is the perfect time for employers to address employees’ changing attitudes about benefits.”

What should you be looking for in terms of retirement-friendly benefits? Here’s what a Hartford survey found in terms of perks of “increased interest”:

  • Employee assistance programs.
  • Student loan repayment plans.
  • Behavioral/mental health services.
  • Wellness benefits

While these benefits may not appear to directly put money into your nest egg, they will

NEW YORK (WABC) — One day before NYC’s phased reopening of in-person learning, the union representing over 6,400 of New York City’s school leaders declared a unanimous vote of “No Confidence” for Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chancellor Richard Carranza due to their “failure to lead New York City through the safe and successful reopening of schools.”

The Council of School Supervisors and Administrators’ Executive Board made the announcement Sunday morning.

The CSA is calling on Mayor de Blasio to cede mayoral control of the Department of Education for the remainder of this health crisis and for de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza to seek the immediate intervention of the New York State Education Department.

“School leaders want school buildings reopened and have been tirelessly planning to welcome back students since the end of last school year,” said CSA President Mark

Next Friday, Oct. 2, large-capacity outdoor venues are expected to reopen, with some restrictions. The Panthers plan to host fans two days later.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Fans will be roaring again soon in Bank of America Stadium, and Mecklenburg County health officials feel assured of the safety protections that will be in place.

Next Friday, October 2, Gov. Roy Cooper is expected to ease COVID-19 restrictions for large outdoor venues, allowing places that hold more than 10,000 people to reopen at seven percent capacity. The statewide stadium policy changes will happen in time to allow visitors back into Bank of America Stadium for the Panthers’ next home game against the Arizona Cardinals on October 4.

While giving an update on the county’s COVID-19 response Friday afternoon, Mecklenburg County’s health director Gibbie Harris said she felt confident about the team’s safety protocols.

“We’ve been working with them for several months on

Your Good Health: Regular exercise brings sense of confidence, well-being

dr_keith_roach_with_bkg.jpgDear Dr. Roach: After reading several of your columns, where readers asked if they are too old for some activity, I wanted to make older adults aware of their untapped reservoir of energy and ability. I notice that most tend to be hesitant to try various activities thinking they are probably too old to attempt it.

I am a retired music teacher; I am not an athlete. I never participated in sports, and I was the “runt of the litter.” I started weight training when I turned 50 and have continued to experience the ability to lift even heavier loads for the past 20 years. It makes me believe that I still haven’t reached my potential. Also, since I retired, I find that although I do not have the stamina I used to have, I can continue to road bike similar distances as 20 years ago just adding a few

Jack Barile had been waiting much of the summer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to publish his research on the most effective way to persuade people to wear masks in a pandemic.

A psychology professor at the University of Hawaii, Barile said the study he’d co-authored — which found that people are more likely to wear masks if leaders promote a “positive attitude” about them — was stuck in the federal review process. The agency and the White House, it seemed, were “slow-walking critical research without clear explanation,” Barile said.

Then, just days before the study by Barile and his co-authors was finally scheduled to publish, Barile was walking to the park scrolling through the latest headlines on his
