Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston discussed tough issues in the ranks and offered ways to maneuver through. He spoke to a live and tuned-in audience Sept. 30 for the 2020 Fires Conference.Grinston discussed how the "My Squad" mentality of connection to those on your Army team, and with family and friends is important. He also explained how being an expert in any particular field means first being an expert Soldier. Grinston discussed how lower-level connections within “My Squad” builds cohesive teams and how Soldiers need to get after the basics to have a strong foundation that allows flexibility in a Soldier’s Army career.

He was asked what was the best way to reduce the stigma of going to behavioral health?

“We haven’t convinced you at the junior leader level that it’s OK. I’m going to say it again, it’s OK to go to behavioral health,” stressed Grinston.

He said the Army is looking into ways to normalize seeing a mental health provider and he suggested one way would be to have all Soldiers go for an annual checkup, if funding would allow it.

California Gov. Newsom receives flu shot during live news conference: ‘It’s a simple thing to do’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday received the flu shot during a live news conference, heeding advice health experts have stressed for months as flu season this year coincides with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“I’ve done this every single year, as long as I can remember,” Newsom said, according to a local news station. “It is a simple thing to do, and getting a flu shot is a safe thing to do.”

“By getting a flu shot, you’re protecting yourself, and you mitigate the impact that what some have referred to as the ‘twindemic’ of a potential second wave of COVID-19 transmissions and the flu happening concurrently putting stress, putting pressure, on our hospital system, draining resources and impacting the quality care that all of you deserve and expect of our health care delivery system,” the governor said, per KERO-TV.

The School of Community Health Sciences Makes an Impact at This Year’s Virtual NPHA Conference

The Nevada Public Health Association is a statewide organization that brings together a diverse group of health professionals to focus energy and foster collaboration between organizations. Every year NPHA hosts a conference, bringing together public health leaders across Nevada. However, in alignment with the best practices for responding to COVID-19, this year’s conference was held virtually.

Faculty and students from the School of Community Health Sciences were recognized throughout the 2020 Nevada Public Health Association Conference with presentations, posters, awards, and new positions on this year’s board. Faculty who presented were Danika Williams, Mel Flores, Shawn Thomas, Elyse Monroy, Jennifer Pearson, Gerold Dermid, Mackenize Abramson, Kristen Clements-Nolle, Eric Crosbie, Taylor Lensch, Baldo Bobadilla,  Kelly Morning, Diana Sande, and Sara Hanafi.
