SPRINGFIELD — The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts announced Friday that it has awarded a new round of coronavirus relief funds totaling more than $2 million to 70 nonprofit groups in the region.

“We recognize that our community depends on a healthy nonprofit sector and these are particularly challenging times for nonprofits in our region,” said Katie Allan Zobel, the foundation’s president and CEO. “These stabilization grants are intended to help nonprofits continue their critical work and adapt to the current reality. Our aim is to help ensure that they are able to continue their vital work throughout, and beyond, our current crisis.”

The funds target nonprofits that have been harmed financially by the pandemic, including organizations that serve the most vulnerable populations, the foundation said in a news release. The maximum grant award for each nonprofit was $50,000 for general operations, and a total of $2.05 million was allocated.

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is receiving new metric to help measure levels of COVID-19 in the community: wastewater.

The National Capital Region is one of the first communities in Canada to conduct daily wastewater readings to help inform its community response in the fight against COVID-19, thanks to innovative research from the CHEO Research Institute (CHEO RI) and the University of Ottawa (uOttawa).

Tracking the number of daily positive cases of COVID-19 is one option to gauge the level of COVID activity in the community. However, since not everyone who has COVID-19 is tested, those numbers may not provide an accurate reading of the whole COVID-19 picture in the population. Furthermore, testing can be a lengthy process and results may take several days to become available.

A promising new public health metric provides early

Repealing the ACA Would Create Chaos for the Disability Community During a Pandemic

October 9, 2020

| Community Health

Poverty is both a cause and a consequence of disability, an unsurprising fact considering that the significant expenses of health care make it the No. 1 reason individuals file for bankruptcy. One-third of GoFundMe donations are dedicated to health care expenses; this, too, is not surprising, given that the American Journal of Medicine reports that more than 40 percent of the 9.5 million people diagnosed with cancer between 2000 and 2012 had zero savings left after two years.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), enacted in 2010, was a game-changer for the disability community and was in some ways comparable to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in terms of the impact the law had on peoples’ lives. While much of the law’s importance has centered on its anti-discrimination protections for people with preexisting conditions—which do have a significant effect on people with disabilities and chronic health conditions—there

Orthodox community is not taking COVID-19 seriously. We have to do better

October 9, 2020

| Community Health

This morning I am sitting at work in numb silence. What is happening in my Brooklyn neighborhood of Borough Park is painful, unacceptable and 100% preventable.

As a healthcare professional who understands the dangers of this virus, I’ve been urging my community to take this pandemic seriously for months. And I’m so disappointed in what our most visible response has become.

This week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that he will reimpose restrictions that will temporarily close non-essential businesses and will limit the size of gatherings in houses of worship to help slow the spread of the virus.

The choice to see the governor’s decision as an attack on religious freedom led many in my community to argue that the treatment of our neighborhoods and zip codes was based on “picking on” the Jews and “anti-Semitism,” “reminiscent of the Holocaust.”

For months, we have had the opportunity to unite around safe
