OPINION: There’s no worse time to threaten the healthcare of millions of Americans than during a pandemic.

With the 2020 presidential election just weeks away and a Supreme Court justice’s seat up for grabs, the Affordable Care Act has once again come under attack and with it, critical funding for the thousands of community health clinics across the United States that deliver care to 29 million Americans.

Community health clinics (CHCs) provide affordable, high quality, comprehensive primary care to medically underserved populations, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay for services.

As chief executive officer of a Federally Qualified Health Center, I am deeply concerned at the prospect of the Affordable Care Act going away.

Neighborhood Health Center (NHC) offers medical, dental, family planning/reproductive health, and behavioral health services to Medicaid, Medicare and underinsured patients in Clackamas and Washington counties.

| Community Health

Intermountain Healthcare’s historic plan to build the nation’s model health system for children has received more than $100 million in gifts from community leaders so far, accelerating efforts to expand the clinical expertise of Primary Children’s Hospital.

Katy Welkie, RN, MBA, CEO of Primary Children’s Hospital and vice president of Intermountain Children’s Health, said in a prepared statement:

We are entering a new era in pediatric health that will shape the next century of care for children served by Intermountain and Primary Children’s Hospital. These generous gifts from the community are helping us embrace this challenge, forge ahead, and achieve our vision to build the nation’s model health system for children without delay.

In January, Intermountain Healthcare announced a $500 million promise — half of which would come from philanthropy — to create a national model for children’s health.

This vision has inspired financial gifts including a $50 million gift

| Community Health

Vargas has supported Nebraska’s Medicaid expansion and pushed for the Legislature to add protections for workers at meatpacking plants.

In explaining his top priority, Vargas said: “We must address health care — not just the immediate demands of the global pandemic, but the overall lack of access to health care for all of our neighbors.”

Sotolongo said he was inspired to run for office by people he’s met in South Omaha and the promise that the South Omaha community offers the rest of the city.

Sotolongo, who works in commercial real estate, said he has encountered impressive stories from lots of different business clients in South Omaha. His father, Dr. Jorge Sotolongo, has a longtime OB-GYN practice in South Omaha.

The junior Sotolongo said economic development is a huge issue for a legislative district that runs from South Omaha to downtown. After the Legislature passed a new economic incentive package

| Community Health

GILBERT, AZ — Gilbert is set to discuss marijuana posing a ‘threat to the health, safety, and security of the community’ at a council meeting next week.

The agenda indicates that the council will discuss an ordinance that would be put in place if Prop 207 passes in November.

The ordinance reads, “The Town finds that proposition 207 authorizes marijuana establishments and testing facilities to use chemical extraction or chemical synthesis, including butane and other flammable gases, to extract marijuana concentrate, which poses a threat to the health, safety, and security of the community and increases the responsibilities of law enforcement and other Town departments to respond to violations of state and local laws, including building, electrical, plumbing and fire codes.”

If the proposition passes, medical marijuana dispensaries will be the first in the state to start selling cannabis to those over the age of 21, until the state’s health

GILBERT, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — The Town of Gilbert City Council will hear and consider adopting an ordinance that bans marijuana.

Voters will decide on Proposition 207, which would legalize marijuana in Arizona, but the town wants to create some guidelines for the residents at a council meeting on Oct. 13.

The ordinance indicates Gilbert believes marijuana “poses a threat to the health, safety and security of the community and increases the responsibilities of law enforcement and other Town departments to respond to violations of state and local laws, including building, electrical, plumbing, and fire codes.”

According to town documents, Gilbert “seeks to protect public health, safety, and welfare by prohibiting marijuana establishments and/or marijuana testing facilities in the Town.”

If the ordinance passes, residents will be allowed to use marijuana for personal use, but not in public places.

Marijuana establishments will not be allowed in the town unless the

JACKSON COUNTY, MI — A Jackson-area retirement community has experienced an increase in deaths related to the novel coronavirus since an outbreak was first identified there in September.

John Ganton’s Countryside Care Center in Summit Township has reported 49 cases of COVID-19 in residents and 14 deaths from the virus since the pandemic began in March, according to data reported to the state as of Oct. 8. It has also reported 40 cases in staff.

Those figures are up from one death on Sept. 30, and 38 cases in staff. The number of COVID-19 cases in residents has stayed the same, the database shows.

“We are continuing to see positive cases but are working to the full extent possible to contain them and protect our residents and staff,” Countryside’s Director of Operations Crystal Caldwell said in an email Friday, Oct. 9.
