Arlington County announces community dialogues on racial equity

October 12, 2020

| Community Health

The goal is “to normalize the conversations that we know are really challenging but we also think will help to lay the foundation for how we can move forward together in the county,” said Samia Byrd, Arlington County’s chief race and equity officer.

Local governments across the nation, including in New York and Minnesota, are brainstorming ways to address racial disparities in their jurisdictions. While critics have dismissed the initiatives as vaguely defined or public relations stunts, advocates say they are a necessary step toward real policy change.

In Arlington, officials said the dialogues are part of a years-long focus on addressing equity issues, rather than a newly formulated response to racial justice demonstrations this summer in the region and throughout the country.

“This is not about just responding to the murder of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and the protests that have existed in communities,” said Arlington County Board

Two mission-aligned non-profits join forces

Lutheran Community Services Northwest (LCS Northwest) and Compass Housing Alliance (Compass) have signed a non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI) for Compass to become an affiliate of LCS Northwest. An affiliation would create one of the region’s largest non-profit alliances providing critical support to people in the lowest income bracket, those experiencing homelessness, and under-served populations in the Pacific Northwest.

“Having Compass affiliate with LCS Northwest is an exciting opportunity for the organizations and Puget Sound,” LCS Northwest President and CEO David Duea said. “Both LCS Northwest and Compass are celebrating 100 years of continuous service and have a similar history of partnering with individuals and families in our community. It is at the heart of what we do.”

NH cities combat new Covid-19 outbreak, increasing community transmission

October 12, 2020

| Community Health

Cases of COVID-19 are rising in states across the country, and in New Hampshire there is evidence of increasing community transmission.

The state’s two largest cities, Manchester and Nashua, are both experiencing this community transmission. Spokeswoman for the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services Laura Montenegro wrote via email Friday that the densest population of residents in the state reside in Nashua and Manchester, so increased cases in those two cities would be expected.

She explained how officials are seeing that places where many people congregate are high-risk settings, more so if they are inside. These sorts of settings can include weddings, sporting events, birthday parties and church gatherings.

“That risk increases if those individuals aren’t wearing masks and if they are singing or yelling or sharing cups,” Montenegro stated.

According to data last updated Friday on the NH DHHS website, the number of COVID-19 cases in New

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — In this pandemic, it has never been more important for low-income neighborhoods to have access to good health care.

At the same time, Fair Haven Community Health Care (FHCHC) is earning national recognition for the work it is doing.

It is one of nearly 1,400 federally-qualified health centers. To get their funding, those centers are all required to send in a copious amount of information every year.

“The government crunches those numbers, and then in the summer, they come out and say these are the health centers that, out of the 1,400 nationwide, have done the best,” explained FHCHC CEO Dr. Suzanne Lagarde.

This summer, the center was recognized as being in the top 10 percentile for being a quality leader, and the top two percent in handling of behavioral health by the Health Resources & Services Administration.

The organization began in 1971, seeing just
