Beyond the Stigma: Mental health challenges at college during a pandemic (Commentary)

Jim Malatras has been the chancellor of the State University of New York system since August 2020. From July 2019 until his appointment as chancellor, he was president of SUNY’s Empire State College.

There is often a lot of pressure and anxiety that comes with being a college student. While mental health issues among college students are not new, the Covid-19 pandemic is exacerbating them. In a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in late June, 63% of 18-to-24-year-olds reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and the prevalence of depression among graduate and professional students is two times higher in 2020 compared to 2019.

But like the great diversity of our students at one of our 64 campuses across the state, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Institutions must enlist health professionals in their community, maximize touchpoints and support layers, mobilize young people who want to

Commentary: Canada’s COVID-19 Vaccine Strategy May Come at Cost of Global Health | Best Countries

September 28, 2020

| Global Health

By Ronald Labonte, Katrina Plamondon, Mira Johri and Srinivas Murthy

When the throne speech was delivered on Sept. 23, Canada had already committed over $1 billion in advance purchase agreements with five drug companies for a minimum of 154 million vaccine doses, if and when these candidate vaccines are proven effective and safe. Two days later, Canada inked another agreement with another company for 20 million more doses, hedging its bets on which of the vaccine contenders will be the first to arrive.

In doing so, Canada joins the premier league of the vaccine nationalists, a handful of rich countries that has pre-purchased (so far) more than half the world’s expected short-term supply of vaccines.

It is understandable that countries want to ensure their ability to protect their citizens’ health. But most of the world’s population lives in countries without the same financial resources to play the global “me first”

Commentary: How to expand access to health coverage

September 27, 2020

| Health Food

The most terrible toll of COVID-19 has been the lives taken from us — more than 15,200 in Texas alone. On the heels of that tragedy is a wave of economic injury to Texas families, communities and entire industries.

Without public policy solutions, if left to chance, too many Texans would see a lifetime of work, and even the work of their parents and grandparents, erased.

But there are policy tools, straightforward and doable, that Texas and the federal government can pick up to provide health care access and economic relief. Importantly, these steps would also begin to undo structural racism that has left Black and Hispanic Texans with dramatically worse uninsured rates and rates of infection, hospitalization and death from COVID-19.

Commentary: Trump resists a government takeover of health care

September 27, 2020

| Better Health

When it comes to health care, there is a deep divide between the policies of President Donald Trump and Joe Biden. But the distinction isn’t so much Trump vs. Biden as it is the American people vs. special interest groups.

When the first debate is held, the theme of the night will be domestic policy, and health care is sure to be hotly debated — as it should be; it’s a top issue for American families. Biden will be touting the Affordable Care Act, adding a “public option” to appease the large contingency of his party that still demands “Medicare for all.”

For his part, Trump has consistently resisted a government takeover of medicine and is looking to create an environment where patients can be in charge of their health care decisions.
