SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) –The Pinal County Public Health Department has mandated the closure of San Tan Foothills High School after “a cluster” of COVID-19 cases were identified at the school.

According to a statement from the department, the new cases and potential exposures were discovered on Friday, Oct. 9.

“Since then, Public Health Department staff have been working closely with the school and the Florence Unified School District to evaluate the extent of the potential spread,” the statement explains. “After careful consideration, Pinal County Public Health has deemed the school’s onsite closure to begin contact tracing and quarantine as the most critical public health interventions to control an outbreak.”

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to step up efforts to contain Covid-19 on Monday. South Korea eased social distancing requirements, and the governor of Jakarta relaxed restrictions in Indonesia’s capital.

U.S. President Donald Trump was flagged by Twitter for declaring himself immune to the Covid-19 virus, a day before returning to the campaign trail. The pandemic has exposed a leadership deficit around the world, according to a survey.

Pinal County health dept. closes high school after finding “cluster” of COVID-19 cases | Coronavirus in Arizona

SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) –The Pinal County Public Health Department has mandated the closure of San Tan Foothills High School after “a cluster” of COVID-19 cases were identified at the school.

According to a statement from the department, the new cases and potential exposures were discovered on Friday, Oct. 9.

“Since then, Public Health Department staff have been working closely with the school and the Florence Unified School District to evaluate the extent of the potential spread,” the statement explains. “After careful consideration, Pinal County Public Health has deemed the school’s onsite closure to begin contact tracing and quarantine as the most critical public health interventions to control an outbreak.”

The department said it will work with the school to contact students and staff who might have been exposed and ask that they quarantine for 14 days. The last known exposure was Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Sri Lanka bans gatherings amid virus cluster

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Authorities in Sri Lanka have banned all public gatherings as a new cluster of coronavirus infections expands in the Indian Ocean island nation.

Health authorities said early Wednesday that the outbreak centered at a garment factory has risen to 830 confirmed cases while more than 1,000 people have been asked to quarantine at their homes.

The health ministry ordered a halt to gatherings such as exhibitions, parties, conferences, indoor or outdoor events, carnivals, musical shows and processions. Officials already imposed a curfew in two suburbs of Colombo where many of the patients live, closed schools and restrictws public transport.

The cluster emerged Monday, a day after Sri Lanka reported its first community infection in two months. The country has reported 3,733 cases during the pandemic, with 13 deaths.

Use of Coronavirus Rapid Tests May Have Fueled White House Covid-19 Cluster, Experts Say

At least eight people who attended the White House’s recent Supreme Court nomination ceremony for Amy Coney Barrett have tested positive for the coronavirus, and public health experts say they expect more attendees to be diagnosed in coming days.

The White House says it has relied on rapid testing to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 among officials and guests. Officials don’t wear masks or socially distance because they are tested daily. The president is also tested for the coronavirus every day, as is anyone who comes in close contact with him.

Health department investigating cluster of Legionnaires’ disease in N.J. that has left 2 dead

Two people have died and two others have been sickened by a cluster of Legionnaires’ disease cases in Hamilton Township in Mercer County, officials announced Friday.

The four residents became ill between Aug. 18 and 24, but no other information about them was released due to HIPPA, according to a release from the township.

“While the risk to our residents remains low, Legionnaires’ disease can be a serious illness especially for those who are older or have underlying health concerns,” Hamilton Township Health Officer Christopher Hellwig said in the release. “If you’re not feeling well and have respiratory illness like symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, and headache I encourage you to speak with your medical provider. Legionnaires’ disease can be successfully treated with antibiotics, and is not spread from person-to-person”
