| Health Current Events

The figures released by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency brought the national caseload to 24,805, including 434 deaths.

Fifty-eight of the new cases was reported from the densely populated Seoul metropolitan area, where transmissions have been linked to hospitals, sports facilities, a funeral home and an army unit.

Thirty-three of the new cases have been linked to international arrivals, including passengers from Russia, Nepal, Japan and the United States.

South Korea relaxed its social distancing guidelines beginning Monday, which allowed high-risk businesses like nightclubs and karaoke bars to reopen and for professional sports leagues to proceed with plans to bring back fans in the stands.

AUSTIN, Texas — An ongoing wave of COVID-19 cases in the El Paso area prompted Gov. Greg Abbott to announce Monday that a surge team of medical professionals would be dispatched to the area.

The 75 doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists being dispatched

Stranded pedestrians in Dallas’ Joppa community get a lift from City Council

October 13, 2020

| Community Health

The southern Dallas community of Joppa got some much-needed relief Tuesday when the Dallas City Council allocated $500,000 to provide immediate, free, “on-demand” transportation via Dallas Area Rapid Transit during construction of a long-awaited pedestrian bridge over the nearby Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

Access has long been a problem in Joppa — pronounced jop-ee — a freedman’s town founded in 1872 by emancipated slave Henry Critz Hines. Joppa, with an estimated population of about 750, lies 6 miles southeast of downtown, between the wetlands of the Trinity River and the Union Pacific train tracks.

Adam Bazaldua, whose District 7 includes Joppa, was among those voting for the measure, which the council approved unanimously, with nary a murmur of dissent.

Even so, Bazaldua called it “an example of what should be considered a basic quality of life that we are unfortunately viewing as a celebration. Because, don’t get me wrong, this

| Health Article

BEIJING — Authorities in the eastern Chinese port city of Qingdao say they have completed coronavirus tests on more than 3 million people following the country’s first reported local outbreak of the virus in nearly two months.

The city’s health department said Tuesday that no new positive cases had been found among the more than 1.1 million test results returned thus far. The city said it had a total of 12 cases, six with symptoms and six without, since the new outbreak was first spotted over the weekend at a hospital.

The National Health Commission, however, said Tuesday that at least six new cases of the virus were found in Qingdao in the past 24 hours.

The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear.

The National Health Commission numbers released Tuesday reported a total of 30 new virus cases in the previous 24 hours nationwide. It broke down those

The initiative is designed to educate students on how to take their digital health into their own hands.

Rachel Burks, the family & consumer sciences SNAP education agent for VCE in Roanoke, defines digital wellness as finding the balance between using screens as tools and as entertainment.

The unprecedented nature of the 20-21 academic year means that more students are spending time using technology.

“It has really allowed us to continue doing the things we need to do in life,” Burks said. “We need to continue learning; we need to continue working; we need to continue connecting with people.”

However, she also recognized the dangers that come with too much time spent in front of a screen.

“Increased screen use is definitely

One-third of Chinese city of 9 million swabbed for virus in two days

October 13, 2020

| Health

More than three million swabs have been taken in a matter of days in Qingdao, the Chinese port city where a minor coronavirus outbreak elicited a sweeping health response.

Queues for testing stretched deep into Monday night across the eastern city, which detected six virus cases the day before but swiftly swung into action to head off a wider outbreak.

In scenes which contrast with the fumbled efforts of other nations to establish effective testing regimes, Qingdao health workers in protective gear set up tents to take samples across neighbourhoods, where parents brought toddlers for testing.

Residents said on social media that community representatives informed them of their nearest testing stations, with local districts helping to organise sample collection for mass testing.

“As of 8 am… our city has taken 3.08 million samples for nucleic testing, with 1.11 million results received,” Qingdao’s health commission said in a statement Tuesday.

China tests entire city for virus as WHO slams herd immunity idea

October 13, 2020
| Health Article

China rushed Tuesday to test an entire city of nine million within days after a minor coronavirus outbreak, as the WHO warned that letting the pathogen run free to achieve herd immunity was “scientifically and ethically problematic”.

The virus is still spreading rapidly around the world, with well over 37 million infections, and nations that had suppressed their first outbreaks are now struggling with fresh surges — especially in some parts of Europe.

In the absence of a vaccine, governments are wary of allowing the virus to spread unchecked, with China launching a sweeping drive to test all residents of Qingdao after a handful of cases were detected on Sunday.

“As of 8 am… our city has taken 3.08 million samples for nucleic testing,” the city’s health commission said Tuesday, adding that no new positive samples were found.

Chinese officials intend to test the entire city — around 9.4 million
