Researchers get to the roots of chronic stress and depression

October 13, 2020

| Health News

A study in mice provides clues about the common molecular origins of chronic stress and depression. The discovery could inform new treatments for mood disorders.

Millions of years ago, our ancestors evolved the physiological responses needed to survive in the face of sudden threats from rivals and predators.

The release of hormones, including epinephrine (adrenaline), noradrenaline (norepinephrine), and the steroid hormone cortisol, trigger these “fight-or-flight” stress responses.

However, sustained or chronic stress that does not resolve when the immediate threat passes is a major risk factor for the development of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Traumatic experiences, for example, in military combat, can also damage the body’s ability to regulate its stress responses, causing post-traumatic stress disorder.

People with these mood disorders have abnormally high and sustained stress hormone levels, which puts them at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm,

Chronic health problems found in recovered COVID-19 patients – report

October 7, 2020

| Health Center

A new report by Israel’s Coronavirus Knowledge and Information Center released on Tuesday reveals how pervasive the so-called “COVID Long” phenomenon has become, and said that according to research, many of those who have recovered from the coronavirus face long-term complications. The report looked at medical research from all over the world and gave some recommendations for Israel’s medical establishment on how to cope with persistent medical problems of those who have recovered from the virus.

Symptoms of COVID Long can affect even those who had mild cases and who were young and in good health when they first became ill, the report said. These persistent symptoms can have a widespread effect on the patients’ nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as their mental health.

The researchers found that the COVID Long phenomenon was similar to lasting complications of other coronaviruses such as SARS and MERS. Some of those

Expert looks at how COVID-19 problems can turn into lifelong chronic diseases

Once a patient is finished fighting COVID-19, their battle might not be over, as some effects could linger and even be worse than the virus itself.

Long-haulers are starting to realize the long-term effects are no joke. The effects could stay with a person for months, years or possibly the rest of a person’s life.

A long-hauler and an expert who studies the new part of the coronavirus fight spoke with sister station KOCO about the lingering effects.

“It’s important to know COVID is not an all or nothing, you die or you’re fine. There’s a whole lot in the middle ground that could impact lives for a very long time,” said Eliza Chakravarty, with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

That’s what Brad Benefield, of Moore, Oklahoma, is now realizing.

“I feel like I have the energy to go do stuff and then, whenever I start, it’s like, ‘Oh no.

Where you live may raise your odds of developing this chronic health problem

September 30, 2020

| Health Food

The neighborhoods we live in dictate a whole lot about our lives. The stores we patronize or the schools our children attend, just to name a few examples.

Now, a new study from Drexel University concludes that one’s neighborhood may also put them at a considerably higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

In more exact terms, the research team says people living in low socioeconomic neighborhoods (low average income, low average education level) may be more susceptible to chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, and poor blood sugar control.

Besides just your neighbor’s finances, a neighborhood’s walkability, availability of healthy food options, and rate of violent crime all appear to influence residents’ odds of developing chronic kidney disease as well.

“Our finding, that people who are living in neighborhoods with the fewest resources are at highest risk for kidney disease, should be a call to health providers to integrate

FDA approved opioids for chronic pain despite lacking ‘critical’ safety data, analysis finds

September 28, 2020

| Health News

Sept. 28 (UPI) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved nearly 50 new prescription opioid pain medications between 1997 and 2018, even though it lacked “critical” data on safety and effectiveness, an analysis published Monday by the journal Annals of Internal Medicine found.

None of the 48 drugs granted agency approval during the more than 20-year period was evaluated in clinical trials that lasted longer than 12 weeks, and the trials often included narrowly defined groups of patients, researchers said.

And few included “systematic assessments” of risks associated with these medications, including addiction potential and non-medical use.

“Our analysis provides a window through which to view the FDA’s opioid regulation over the past 20 years,” study co-author Dr. Caleb Alexander, founding co-director of the Center for Drug Safety and Effectiveness at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told UPI.

“We found the FDA often approved new opioids based
