Army chief of staff: COVID-19 having effect on troop suicides

October 13, 2020

| Health Article

Army Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville said Tuesday that he sees a direct correlation between COVID-19 and the rise in troop suicides.

“I am very concerned about the behavioral health impacts of COVID and its effect on our soldiers,” McConville told reporters at the Pentagon.

“Some of the scientists have said they’ve not been able to show causation between COVID and suicide, but I would argue, at least my sense is, it is having an effect because it disconnects people.”

Army leadership has voiced concern about the increase in suicides in its ranks since March, when many people were told to stay home due to the coronavirus pandemic and the Pentagon began to limit movement of forces.

The Associated Press first reported last month that military suicide deaths since early spring were up as much as 20 percent compared with the same period in 2019. Among Army active-duty troops,

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is questioning President Donald Trump’s fitness to serve, announcing legislation Thursday that would create a commission to allow Congress to intervene under the 25th Amendment to the Constitution and remove the president from executive duties.Just weeks before the Nov. 3 election, Pelosi said Trump needs to disclose more about his health after his COVID-19 diagnosis. She noted Trump’s “strange tweet” halting talks on a new coronavirus aid package — he subsequently tried to reverse course — and said Americans need to know when, exactly, he first contracted COVID as others in the White House became infected. On Friday, she planned to roll out the legislation that would launch the commission for review. “The public needs to know the health condition of the president,” Pelosi said, invoking the 25th Amendment, which allows a president’s Cabinet or Congress to intervene when a president is unable to conduct the … Read More

UNITED NATIONS — The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the “utterly inadequate health systems” around the world, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Wednesday in arguing that universal health coverage is essential for nations to deal with future health crises.

He said the failure to respond adequately to the outbreak has claimed more than 1 million lives, infected over 30 million people in 190 countries, wiped out 500 million jobs and is costing the global economy $375 billion a month. Indicators of human advancement and well-being are going in reverse for the first time since the U.N. started measuring them in 1990,

By Sarah Krueger, WRAL Durham reporter

Durham, N.C. — A packed parking lot is a daily sight at Lincoln Community Health Center in Durham, which for half a century has been trying to provide the city’s neediest residents with the health care many others take for granted.

“We’re always busy, yes,” said Dr. Howard Eisenson, Lincoln’s chief medical officer. “There’s a great deal of demand for our services, and it’s good that we’re here.”

Started when what is now Duke Regional Hospital opened to replace two segregated hospitals – whites-only Watts Hospital and Lincoln Hospital for Black residents – the health center on Fayetteville Street provides an option for people without transportation to obtain care in their neighborhood.

Lincoln sees about 35,000 patients a year, “probably in the neighborhood of 140,000 patient visits a year,” Eisenson said.

The center provides a range of medical services for both children and

Michigan Health Chief Cites ‘Broad’ Authority, Issues Rules | Michigan News

By DAVID EGGERT, Associated Press

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s health chief said Tuesday he has “broad” legal authority to curb the coronavirus, as he issued additional orders reinstituting restrictions negated by a state Supreme Court ruling and requiring schools to notify the public of infections.

Robert Gordon, director of the Department of Health and Human Services, reinstated rules for nursing homes and other congregate-care settings. He also told local health departments to inform K-12 schools within 24 hours of learning of a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19. A school must post it on its website within 24 hours of being notified.

The steps came a day after Gordon ordered the wearing of masks and limits on gathering sizes following the court decision that declared unconstitutional a law Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer had used to unilaterally extend an emergency order and underlying virus-related restrictions.

He again cited a 1978

They say home is where the heart is.

Grand Strand Health announced on Sept. 29 that Dr. George Helmrich will be the new Chief Medical Officer for the health system. Helmrich said he chose to take the position at Grand Strand Health because it was a great professional opportunity for him and it brings him closer to his family.

“They’re all in South Carolina so I’m much closer,” he said. “I had a grandson three and a half weeks ago.”

Helmrich will replace Dr. Andy Schwartz, who retired at the end of August.

“He was well-liked and well-respected,” Helmrich said of Schwartz.

Helmrich most recently served as CMO at HCA Healthcare’s Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center in Panama City Beach, Fla. Prior to his years in Panama City, he spent 16 years in the Greenville, S.C., area serving in various complex clinical and operational positions with Greenville Health System and

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s health chief said Tuesday he has “broad” legal authority to curb the coronavirus, as he issued additional orders both reinstituting restrictions negated by a state Supreme Court ruling and requiring schools to notify the public of infections.

Robert Gordon, director of the Department of Health and Human Services, reinstated rules for nursing homes and other congregate-care settings. He again cited a law that empowers him to act to control a pandemic.
