Carla Oates’s multi-million-dollar beauty empire is built around the idea of nourishing your body ‘from the inside out’, and now the founder of The Beauty Chef has shared the daily wellness rituals she swears by for glowing skin and optimum health.

Carla, 46, from Sydney, said there are a ‘few rituals’ that keep her ‘gut happy, her immunity strong and her skin glowing’ – including morning walks, good quality sleep and a daily well-being spray that she carries around with her and sprays under her tongue after meals.

The Beauty Chef owner founded her range of probiotic powders and elixirs in 2009, after a personal battle with eczema led her to seek a more holistic cure.

A decade down the track and Carla’s Beauty Chef is one of Australia’s most successful beauty exports.

Food science class with Obama chef a recipe for remotely engaging K-12 students

When elementary school teacher Cheresse Thomas taught virtual summer school to help keep kids busy during the pandemic, math and science were on the menu — and so were smoothies and ceviche.

Thomas’ students — kindergarteners and first- and second-graders — were among some 1,700 K–12 students from across the Los Angeles Unified School District participating in a new UCLA science and food class. Teachers from more than 40 classes customized the course outline to their students’ age level, teaching them the science behind each week’s recipe — and sharing the grocery list. That prepared them for the live weekly cooking webinar and Q&A session with UCLA’s partner Bill Yosses, former pastry chef for the Obama White House.

“The cooking demonstrations really got the students’ attention,” said Thomas, who currently teaches third grade at Yes Academy in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Hyde Park. “The next day they’d come

Charles Wilford’s grandfather was not going to let him run the streets. And that’s how he learned to cook.

“You see, my grandfather had a tight grip on me and kept me inside with my grandmother, and I would sit in the kitchen and was amazed by how they would create meals for the family,” recalled Wilford, who in high school went on to work in one of Baton Rouge’s finest restaurants, Jake Staples’ The Place, under the tutelage of chef Amelia Griffin, known as Miss Maude.

“Miss Maude was one of the best in Louisiana,” Wilford said. “I would even put her in the same company as chef Leah Chase, of New Orleans.”

Following a stint in the Navy, Wilford found a new mentor at The Country Club of Louisiana where chef Sonny Creole “put me on the right track and the love for my craft today.”

The 54-year-old

Chef Ivy Stark helped change how Americans viewed Mexican food and now she’s onto plant-based eating

October 7, 2020

| Health Food

It’s been more than two decades since chef Ivy Stark showed diners that Mexican food wasn’t simply hard-shell tacos brimming with ground beef or a basket of chips with guac.

With the recent debut of Whole Food Vegetarian Cookbook, her third book, Stark is adding her voice to the growing movement around plant-based diets. But for the chef—who many New Yorkers may know from her time leading the kitchens of Dos Caminos, Rosa Mexicano and El Toro Blanco—it’s not simply a fad. While she doesn’t consider herself a vegetarian or vegan, this book is full of recipes that shows the way Stark has been eating for years.

“I think it’s here to stay. I’ve been amazed at the growth of it,” says Stark about the growing popularity of plant-based eating. “People are looking to eat in a healthier way, but they still want to enjoy their
