Charles Wilford’s grandfather was not going to let him run the streets. And that’s how he learned to cook.

“You see, my grandfather had a tight grip on me and kept me inside with my grandmother, and I would sit in the kitchen and was amazed by how they would create meals for the family,” recalled Wilford, who in high school went on to work in one of Baton Rouge’s finest restaurants, Jake Staples’ The Place, under the tutelage of chef Amelia Griffin, known as Miss Maude.

“Miss Maude was one of the best in Louisiana,” Wilford said. “I would even put her in the same company as chef Leah Chase, of New Orleans.”

Following a stint in the Navy, Wilford found a new mentor at The Country Club of Louisiana where chef Sonny Creole “put me on the right track and the love for my craft today.”

Health Management Associates Names Douglas Elwell CEO; Charles (Chuck) Milligan Joins Firm as COO

LANSING, Mich., Oct. 5, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Health Management Associates (HMA) announced today that Chief Operating Officer Douglas (Doug) L. Elwell will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer, effective Nov. 1.

Elwell has been HMA’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) since February when he rejoined the firm after serving as the Illinois Medicaid director. Charles J. (Chuck) Milligan will join HMA Nov. 1 as the firm’s COO. Marilynn Y. Evert, HMA’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the last 11 years, will continue her 21-year career with the firm as vice chairman and senior advisor.

During his first tenure with HMA, Elwell was a principal and managing principal in the Indianapolis office from July 2003 through October 2014. Much of his career, prior to joining HMA, was dedicated to leading hospital systems in roles as CEO, COO, and CFO. More recently, Elwell was deputy chief executive officer for finance and strategy

Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded for discovery of hepatitis C to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice

The Nobel Prize in Medicine has been jointly awarded to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice for the discovery of hepatitis C virus.

The award is one of the most sought-after global accolades and grants entry into one of the most prestigious clubs in the world.

The Nobel Assembly said in a news release Monday that the three scientists “made seminal discoveries that led to the identification of a novel virus.” It said the trio had “made a decisive contribution to the fight against blood-borne hepatitis, a major global health problem that causes cirrhosis and liver cancer in people around the world.”
